The RWD XR4i was one of those cars that appealed to my teenage self back in the day, and aspired to.  Maybe that made reality even more disappointing when I drove the first one I did.  And then all the others were no better.  Big, heavy, cumbersome lump that wasn't great in bends, and was IMHO bullishly flat in a straight line.  I think from memory, it was the same lump as what Bro had in his MkII Grandad 2.8i Ghia?

The other "big car" I always wanted was the 24v Senator when it first came out, never bought one of those either ;D.  Ended up with a MkII Astra GTE instead - that wasn't much cop in the corners either ;D

I remember going with my Dad to test drive a 2.8 Granada and the 24v Senator. Guess which one won?

All the V6 Fords from that era were flat as a witches tit to drive. Lazy things to cruise around in, yes. Comfortable, yes, but not drivers cars in any respect.Had very nice leather interiors if memory serves, but that might be the rose tinted specs at it again... ;)

Had no complaints about the Granada Scorpio* interior or the way that the 24v Cosworth went 8)

* the Mk3 rather than the boggle eyed turd.
The Mk2 seats were decent too, but that really needed injection and a manual gearbox to be considered a driver's car. Never owned or drove the 2.8i Sport with it's Recaro seats and slightly lower suspension, but the manual 2.8i Ghia X had the same TRX wheels and the larger diameter coupled with wider lower profile tyres certainly didn't hurt the handling... 205/60/390 Vs 185/70/14 iirc...

Bro's one was that spec, though not 100% sure about gearbox now, could have been auto, but in the back of my mind it was a 5 speed manual, not that common to have more than 4 back then.

He didn't have it long due to reliability and repair costs, an replaced it with a early Chavalier SRi 130, which handled better and was certainly quicker.

Aylesbury
My childhood home.  Bit of a shithole now, sadly.

Where in Aylesbury?

I guess the actual ceremony will be on the parade ground up the hill on the camp.

My eldest was there for his basic training. He passed out and had to go back as the chef training was also done there

Spent the day sorting some more bodged wiring on my mates Mercury Comet, thought the starter /ign switch might have been faulty but turned out after stripping it all out it was the redundant column shifter still had the inhibit switch wired in and the shifter in gear position. Snip snip and a rewire to the ratchet shifter switch sorted that. We had to take the fuse box out to find where the feed was for reverse lights , turned out to be a blown fuse but sorted some more bodged wires when it was out. Back next week to sort some more!!

I think thats what I know as theh Red Lion, almost opposite Budgens, about halfway up the High Street.  I might have been in there more frequently than I care to remember, as my bestie mate came from Wendover.

If you have time, wander up to Combe Hill, probably about a 2 mile walk there, follow same route back. Stunning views over the Vale of Aylesbury from up there - walk up the High Street, passed the Shoulder of Mutton and over railway line and up the hill, as the road bends to the right, go straight on instead up the path, and it'll take you right up to the monument  at the top. Dog friendly if you have the mutt with you :y

(You can drive if preferred - up high st, passed shoulder of Mutton and railway, keep going along road for about a mile until you get to a cross roads. Go left towards Great Misery, after about half a mile, turn left* and about third of a high up the hill on a sharp right bend is a carpark. Park here (free) and walk through gate near the road (usually an ice cream van parked there) and follow that path for about 300m to momument)

*don't turn right into a driveway, thats one of the back entrances to Chequers, and the security there have a sense of humour failure...

Other worthwhile places include Wendover Woods (search for Go Ape Wendover) which overlooks Halton Camp, but horrifically expensive to park and Daniels Trudge which is opposite the "In" drive to Wendover Woods (but I get a feeling the carpark is closed now)

I went to school there, so our mission was always to try to get them in trouble.  This played out into later life, when we all used to bait the on camp mod plod.
