Winter Camping
« on: 08 November 2007, 23:26:40 »

Hi Guys,

Does anyone here have any experience of winter camping? I think it sounds like a fantastic idea, it's something I've always wanted to do, and if I can get the time off, I might see if I can persuade Maria to come to Scotland with me in January for ten days.

Recommendations for kit etc would be most welcome. We have a good four seasons tent, need to get better sleeping bags for those conditions though. Have portable camping cooker, and all the camping cutlery. Also water carrier and decent torches.

Also need to make considerations for the dogs, can't have them getting cold. Maybe a short kennel stay if needsbe.

There is lots of information on Google. Anyone ever done this?

James,

I think you're nuts. There seems to be a growing consensus on weather sites I visit that we could be in for a cold and snowy winter.

My advice is to stay at home by the fire (...and fix my HDD  ;D  ;) )

I have already retrieved some more files from your HDD, but far from all, it is very unhealthy. I have been focusing on the pictures folder.

It would be ideal to find another identical drive, to build yours into.... so far everyone I've seen on fleabay has a different p/n :(

Camping in the winter can be lots of fun, particularly when theres fresh snow in the morning.  It does need thought, preparation and correct kit to get the best advantage.

It can also be a mirror opposite to hell on earth, temperature wise, if you are incorrectly prepared.  :'(

I prefere bothying in the winter.  At least there are solid wooden walls around you and, if you get a good bothy, a stove in the middle of the floor that you can cook on as well as give out heat.

Still gets friggin cold at night though!!   ;D

A bothy is a wooden stalkers hut, out on the highland estates.  Normally used by hunting party's to get out of the weather and have a brew and partake of a poshe pique nique of fingerfood and swap tales of derring doo and all that...

Us locals use them, with permission of the estate owners, to overnight in when hiking over estate lands, especially in winter.  Cracking stuff, if you get a good one....

Ive camped all year round.

Summer a nice big airy tent, light sleeping bags
Winter, you are better in a small tent, less to heat up, but a lot more awkard to 'live' out of.
Good warm mummy style bags as well.

Spring / Summer / Autumn for me these days, and prefer Spring / Autumn

I must admit after one night in the Black Forest in September we chickened out and got a B&B. Camping in Italy was great but a bit of altitude and it was a different story. Hot during the day, 2 degrees at night :o We both had reasonable quality 4 seasons sleeping bags and a duvet on top of that (the luxuries of camping out of the boot of an Omega!) but Emma was shivering so much it woke me up!

The single most important thing is to ensure your have a decent sleeping bag.  By decent I mean a 4 season and spend upwards of £100!  If you are cold at night it will really spoil the holiday.

Obviously, you will need warm clothes and a decent outer coat that is wind and waterproof.  Make sure that you have plenty of hot meals and drinks.

Hope this helps

Your crazy, James! But, in addition to top grade modern sleeping bags, you MUST have as much, if not more, underneath you than on top. The cold strikes up from the ground!

I concur

Old fashioned carry-mats, then an airbed, jobs a goodun  :y

Those Thermarest self inflating mats are meant to be good, but not cheap

Quite correct - remember the old adage "One blanket on the ground is worth two on top".

You can use air beds, as long as you have a couple of blankets on the mattress and then the sleeping bag.  I have done this myself and found it OK.

Forget the camping and get yourself on here. Find a nice cottage with a real fire and close to a pub. This time of year they are really cheap.

Really risky..I'm 100 kg..Even in 0 Celcius I cant stay more than 3 hours outside with really strong dresses..

Necessary very good camping materials for winter that mountain climbers use..And women are weak to handle it..

Better go in a cold climate vacation and stay near the fire.. :)

Apart from the temperature/weather, don't forget that it goes dark early, so you'll either be spending a very long time in the hostelry or you need a proper lantern - worth investing in if you're serious.

Those that made it to the lakes will know that when Mrs TheBoy comes camping, she doesn't like to get cold.  We're talking Duvets, Sleeping bags, blankets, the lot.  Even then, we've got bloody cold before, even in Sept (did get a frost that year, in Torquay!).  For night, you need lots of layers under you as well as on top, and need to be off the ground.  Fires help in evening/morning, but not really during the night if its that cold.  Lots of layers of clothing to sleep in as well.

We had some hot soup in a flask as well, so if that cold, at least that was warming.

If it gets to freezing, you have to be careful about your breath causing ice formation around mouth/nose.

I do, a nice warm hotel, meals cooked for you and a bar  :y

I have a tent that will be far better for you and Maria, doesn't take up a lot of space in the car, up within a minute, two fit snuggly ;) don't mind if you want to lend it :y

I don't feel the cold normally - when I was young, we had to scrap ice from inside of windows to see out (sash windows are hopeless)
