Omega General Help / Problem - misfire and EML on :-(
« on: 16 November 2010, 16:48:08 »
Hi Folks,

Just had a weird problem on the way home...   :-/

Car started running really rough - loss of power, not firing on all cylinders, and revs hunting at tick-over.
The EML (not the spanner one - the "emissions" one) started flashing, and then stayed on.

Read the fault codes, and it's coming up with:

P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

What on earth could cause a misfire on these 4 cylinders?!

When I started it up again a couple of minutes later, it ran fine.

Any ideas??  :'(

Yes i have to give my wheels a good scrub every week or it starts to burn into the alloy. only way round it is to paint your wheels a nice shade of black  :P

try paint protector polishes also for alloys, they do help..
Thanks CEM i've never tried paint protectors on wheels before :y

Even a coat of polish over clean wheels will make future cleaning much easier.  :y

On that front BTW, I put a coat of Turtle Wax Ice on mine after I've washed them - the brake $h17e doesn't bak on as much then, so it's  just a quick rinse/sponge off job then.

I've always used gen GM pads on mine, and as you say Josh - they do make a fair bit of dust.

Who's are those pads which don't have the chamford (sp) edges on them?  Same footprint, but a greater disk-pad contact area must be a benefit in the brake performance area?

I've been tempted to run some EBC Grenstuff or Redstuff Pads in my motor (used Redstuff in my Astra GSi, but they seemed almost dangerous when cold, never tried greenstuff) - but the redstuff gave next to no dust off, greenstuff perhaps worth a try?  I'm tempted by the redstuff, given the weight/inertia of the Omega to generate some heat, with obviously the shoebox Astra didn't have??  :-/  :-/

Whereabouts are you?
If local to the North-West, I may be able to help out  :y

Similar thing to Cav's, where the GSi's and SRi's in Bordeaux Red used to have beige dash's - never bothered me to be honest

Omega General Help / Re: Engine noise, terminal?
« on: 07 March 2010, 01:40:09 »
I take it you haven't checked to see whether or not the frequency of the knocking increases with revs? (Understandable, given the first instinct would be to knock the engine off!)

It's not something daft like an engine mount coming loose is it?  Yes, nothing to to do with the work you've done on the engine, but maybe a cruel coincidence?

Hopefully it's summut n nowt - fingers crossed for you Jamie  :y

I would have tried the compression test again with a little oil in each bore in case it had been washed by attempting to start. There is some compression so it should have run.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's another issue. Sounds like the head gasket needed doing anyway, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's not the reason it's a non-runner.

Kevin
Yes, back to the subject in matter in point, as oppose to conjecture and generalisation...  ::)

My money too would be on the headgasket given the differences in compression from one bank to the other.  I know you mention the coolant is manky - is it manky as in water/oil mixing manky, or manky as in it's never been flushed/changed since it came out of Russelheim?  Any sign of oil-in-water on the dipstick at all?

But... although you mention the plugs were damp with petrol, what condition where they in, in comparison from one bank to the other?  (I'm wanting to rule out piston rings here?)

Cheers  :y

if millage is genuine its worth getting on the road again, but plod cars are usually bit rough, unless its just been a transport car.

But old facelift plodders are going to be worth next to nothing, who ever owns it can't spend too much getting it running again

Yep, agree - my ex-plod's a bit rough too  :'( , as per pics:

All ex-plods are the same - never get looked after, and are worth nothing more than a couple of buttons and a bit of fluff.

i'd be cautions of 70k miles on a W plate that been x-plod, is it white? If its been a traffic car, they retire them at those miles...
Eh??  My last ex-plod had done nearly 120k when I bought it - and I was the first civvy keeper??  :-/  And I've been known to see them come up at auction with well over 140k on them, direct from police??  :-/

Omega General Help / Car Security Code
« on: 27 March 2010, 11:15:29 »
Hi Folks,

Can anybody help me get the security code for my Mig?

With it being ex-plod, I didn't get the Car Pass with it.

Cheers  :y

To an extent - yes, but if water is gushing past the seals...

Are the drain-holes clear at the bottom of the doors?  Not blocked with general crud, or the anti-corrosion wax are they?

What state are your window rubbers (which go around the inside of the door against the window) and the window trim (on the outside of the door, that fits against the bottom of the window) in?  Perished at all?

Not sure if it's the same on older Omega's as it used to be on Cav's...  But if you left the battery negative lead disconnected for an hour or so, as long as the fault was rectified (as yours is), the light would go out when the battery was reconnected.
