Whine from wheel bearings or diff?
« on: 17 July 2009, 11:12:38 »

My manual 2.6l estate has developed a 'mid-range' whine from the rear and I'm struggling to pin it down.
The car is used for towing a c*****n but this is well within its capabilities, so I doubt this has caused any unusual damage.
The pitch doesn't vary noticably with speed, nor when de-clutching or changing gear, but disappears on left hand bends, but not when turning right.
Would you agree that the most likely cause is a worn rear wheel bearing?
If so, can anyone point me in the direction of a 'How to' in the guides? I can't find one. Is it a job a keen DIY 'mechanic' without specialist tools can tackle?
Thanks,
Bill.
