MV6 - oh cock.
« on: 13 April 2008, 21:58:11 »

Had a second opinion earlier, looks like HG  :'(

Any preferences for which HG I should use?

Obviously, cam gaskets will be genuine, anything else I should use genuine gaskets for?

I have to say though, is it really worth keeping the MV6 going?

Your tractor is far better on fuel, ok not as fast but still.

Plus you hardly use the MV6 any more  :'(

No.  I suspect my engine is in significantly better condition than any likely donor.

Absolutely. Changing the HGs is probably about the same work as changing the engine, and then you're in completely uncharted territory with an engine that could be breaked from day one. If the engine is known and has been cared for fix it.

Definitely do the HG... Not too bad to do really! I'd always get the heads skimmed as a matter of course but I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs!!

Are you going to do both sides whilst you're there?? Not an awful lot more work really!!

Personally I'd do them both, fit a quality pattern HG set (do these have stretch bolts? If so then just fit new) and obviously new Cam Belt Kit.

As it's only had a coolant leak, and fire rings are still presumably intact I would suggest it won't even need a skim.

Certainly worth doing both, as if one gasket has deteriorated, the other won't be far behind it.

Thanks M_DTM :y

Just get the HG, or a gasket set?

Also, chances of the threads on cooler stripping during removal?  Is it worth getting a cooler kit, and reselling on if not required?

The 3 sealants - green, grey, and black?

Aiming to do later this week, with a bit of help from someone - hopefully Fri/Sat - I suspect it will take us more than a day ::)

Just get the gaskets, the rest of the stuff in the kits is crap.

You need three different types of sealent.

1) Black for the cam covers
2) Green for the front bearing caps
3) Grey for the oil cooler plate.

With the heads off you can get the oil cooler out still attached to the plate so no risk there.

I have a set of 3.0 heads ready to fit sat on the shelf I can do you as an exchange pair (you would need to buy 24 stem seals so I can re-furb your old heads).

Is the crank oil seal ok on yours?

Got a tiny weep from back one, so would presumably need to seperate from cooler to replace washers?

This is the list that Mark gave me for mine

I use this company for the head gaskets (need to speak to them though as you dont want the full kit because every other gasket is crap!):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-OMEGA-SINTRA-SAAB-9000-3-0-V6-HEAD-GASKET-SET_W0Q...

These head bolts (I have had problems with other non-branded bolts!):

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HEAD-BOLTS-VAUXHALL-OPEL-CALIBRA-V6-OMEGA-V6-VECTRA-V6_W0Q...

These exhaust manifold gaskets:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vauxhall-V6-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-GASKET-CALIBRA-VECTRA_W0QQite...

The cam belt kit from buypartsby (sutton auto factors) will do the job (would need to keep the old backing plate but the rest is the same).

I have had good success in re-using the cam seals (dont take them off the cams) but find the non-gen ones leak....

Then for genuine bits you will need:

4 Dowty washers for coolant bridge.
Cam cover gasket set.
coolant transfer pipe O ring.
2 front pipe to manifold gaskets.
Black cam cover sealent
Grey goo(for oil cooler plate)
Green sealent (for front bearing caps)

I also re-seal the oil cooler when the heads are off as a matter of course (coz its easy to do!) so you would also need 4 of the metal washers for the cooler to pipe conenctions.

Then its oil and filter.

Are these all the genuine parts I need to get:

2 x GASKET, MANIFOLD TO CYLINDER HEAD X25XE, X30XE   24416110
2 x GASKET, COVER TO CYLINDER HEAD (CONSISTS OF 2 PIECES) 90511451
16 x  'O'RING    90411826
2 x GASKET, FRONT PIPE TO MANIFOLD X25XE, X30XE   90499289
4 x SEAL, RING, 16 X 20, OIL COOLER PIPE TO RADIATOR  11076852
1 x SEAL, RING, WATER INLET NECK TO CYLINDER HEAD  9128362
4 x SEAL, RING    12992647

Pretty certain I have the sealants already, might not have the green, so need to double check.

Probably worth changing stat at same time, stick with a genuine stat?

Looks about right, would need to check the numbers.

The dowty ones (bottom ones) are the ones I wasn't too sure of - seemed to be quite a few options with filtering off, but only those with filter on (bit distrusting of the filtering).

You probably already know this but, if fitting a new stat and housing you will need shorter bolts as they have reduced the flange thickness by a country mile >:(

epc implies otherwise :( - I'll buy the seal anyway just to be safe :)
