Repair Help / Advice for Golf reversing camera
« on: 29 December 2022, 14:55:22 »

So the Camera (flips out of boot release) on her 2010 Golf VI has given up.

Removed it, opened it up, found a broken wire.....

Carefully scraped back some plastic, did my best soldering with poor access, added some PVA glue as insulation added a little cable tie to try and reduce strain on the join and refitted.  Lasted a couple of weeks
Any ideas on how to do a longer lasting repair?

PVA isn't waterproof, so there's that...  ;)

Wasnt worried about weather...its dry in there, and didnt think heat shrink would get to where i needed it given where I was trying to solder was previously embedded in solid plastic

It must have been assembled somehow, would breaking it down differently improve access any?
Removing the handle from the housing for example...

If you can get the camera out, then replacing the wire from point to point might become an option. But it seems strange the the wire is actually part of the plastic as that would involve moulding it in there, which wouldn't do the wires any favours.

Yeah. Built like this and not really disassembleable.

This shows a bit more of the issue on someone else’s

Right, that's a boot that covers the back of the camera. Strip the unit down to its base components, and with the camera out, strip it down and replace all three wires and connect them to the existing loom somewhere far more accessible.

Or buy a new one.

I would wager that Skoda and Seat use the same camera and probably sell it separately.

Camera is moulded into the other end of the same plastic. So further stripping down doesn’t give you anything. I’ve only found full units for sale. And they ain’t cheap

Removing the camera unit might give you a part number if nothing else, but it simply isn't possible for it to be a single piece.

If it was assembled, it can be disassembled.

Also, these places selling retrofit kits are selling VW parts, at a profit. Try Seat and VW dealers for the camera unit, although you still have to remove it to fix it properly or replace it.

Fundamentally, if you don't have access to work on it in situ, then removing it will give much better access. After all, you didn't try to solder it within the tailgate...  ;)

Cheers. Yes that looks like the bugger. As you can see fixes between the lens and where the cables enter the body are somewhat limited. A more reasonable replace option.

What you see under the handle is clearly some sort of case.

If it was assembled, it can be disassembled.

That's not necessarily true, especially if you want to put it back together. This is the sort of part that is only ever intended to be sold, bought, removed and refitted as an assembly, so taking it apart is much more likely to be a maybe I can buy the generic part it's made from exercise. It's German, so that's not terribly likely.

However, it's already knackered, so there's nothing to actually lose ;D

Worth paying someone who car solder?  And then some sort of putty or thick glue (hot glue gun?) to give it some extra mechanical strength.

If that's not possible/viable, then replacement is the only option if the camera is essential.

Like the glue gun idea.
Think I prob need to free up a bit more metal to solder to as well.

Liberate the camera first to give you a sporting chance of success  ;)
