How do I remove an alternator?

As above - how do I remove it to check it?

have you measured voltage yet at idle, and 2000rpm?

its just bolted on. comes off easy enough, but may need to remove bits to get your fists in there...

I haven't removed an alternator for years

Tomorrow I do the first check to see if the cable is definately connected

Then call work

Might say sod it and try a local recon place and see if they do while you wait

Easy

Multiram setup out.

Aux belt off.

Disconnect battery

Remove the two securing bolts (one end is torx, the other end hex)

swing the alternator out and disconnect the two rear electrical connections.

Re-fit is the reverse.

Sub 1 hour easy.

Due to hand damage (savaged by chipmunks while getting them for sale), time and the fact it is probably repairable it is now at a local auto electrician.

Working from home now as I have no transport.

That's a lot, especially going off the prices MarkDTM quoted for regulator brushes, and bearings are only cheap (mine come from the stores! ;))
My local autospark seems to charge £25 for everything!  ;D  ;D  ;D

I had no other way to get to work and no easy way to ferry bits around

What the break is that supposed to do to a solid state device (yours is different to the one in the how to)

That is MUCH to much money!

You could have got a gm one fitted for that money

New regulator fitted

Cleaned

Checked over

110 + vat for a GM exchange.

How was I supposed to get to Reddich running total loss, then back to Inkberrow, then home, then run TL for the next 3 days, could kill the battery.

I didn't want to take any more holiday or lose pay. A days wages dropped is not worth trying to save £40 or £50.

They removed and refitted as well.

Remember - my only car, I have no other way to get to work.

Remember even DIY maintenance sometimes you just have to pay.
