Newbie buying - advice needed
« on: 01 December 2007, 06:46:21 »

Hi there - buying Omega in the next few days.  Got a choice of Y reg 2.5 CD (60,000 miles) or 03 reg 3.2 Elite (110,000 miles) for an extra £1400. Both cars seem about the same mechanical & bodily condition.  Any advice on what to look out for and which might be the better buy would be much appreciated.  Not too bothered about fuel consumption (currently running a 3.1 Isuzu Trooper tank), but don't want to be silly about it.

Welcome to the forum :y

The most important thing to find out is when was the cam belt and tensioners replaced.

They must have been replaced every 40,000 miles or 4 years.

You also need documented proof.

If they haven't been done to the schedule, you may be able to negotiate the price downwards.

Look also for oil leaks around the cam covers, a sure sign that the breathers need cleaning, not a big job.

:)Welcome aboard Alex. AA answered the main question about FULL cambelt kit, we've all done it. Highest garage/dealer price is £450ish so argue that with the seller. Some can do thier own, i can't but got mine done for £235 all in. It IS important on these engines so do'nt be tempted to leave it.
As regards which car to choose, the Y reg with low mileage sounds good but then so does the 3.2 Elite.
Only you can decide whether the newer higher specced car is worth £1400 more with nearly twice the mileage is worth it. They both have thier merits. 8-)

Hi Alex and welcome.
I've a 3.2 elite ( bought of Elite Pete ) and she's a cracking motor comfortable, all the toys & leather seats. I call her my little pocket rocket, cos if I drive her like a rocket, it will empty my pocket, but drive sensible, I average 24.2 mpg around the valleys and 29 mpg on a mix of local and dual carrage roads. There's plenty of power under the bonnet and very smooth to drive, even with 172,000 miles on the clock. I had a 2.5 cd which was a very nice drive and comfy, but the 3.2 is a different beast altogether. Personnaly i'd go for the 3.2 elite, and make sure you get a full up to date service book with it.
