Smell of oil, bemused! Any ideas?
« on: 06 January 2014, 02:26:06 »

Hi Everybody

Happy New Year and long time no speak

My Miggys still going strong and drives great
Good old Symes did tracking for me recently and a full service on her

I've got a problem though, while driving her she's fine, but when coming to a stop or sat at lights etc, I get a very strong whiff of oil!
Driving me insane as Syme recently cleaned my breathers out and she goes much better
The smell of oil has only started after I had an oil change

Any ideas why I'm getting this whiff which has lasted about 6 weeks??!

I've got no steam coming from the rocker covers
Symes gonna look at these next Sunday
But thought I'd ask on here incase anyone else has ever had this Oil whiff!!? lol

Usually failed cam cover gaskets leaking oil on the manifold heat shield, drivers side is in front of the pollen filter to the cabin. Air flow does the rest.

Okey dokey
Even though theirs no effect on performance of the car?
When I do have new ones put on
Will I notice a difference in MPG and anything else?

Usual detriment is missfires caused by oil leaking into the spark plug wells. If its running fine that suggests its only the outside edges of the cam covers leaking, or the oil hadn't eaten the spark plug lead caps yet.

Unless its misfiring, you will notice no problems at all. ...apart from the smell of oil of course ;D

...is the oil cap secure, along with the filler neck?

£70/80 from vx only for the gaskets. If the leads are buggered price them up from a factors. Euro car parts do a set for under £50 last I looked. Dont use vx for leads they are over £100 a side.

Ps. Don't panic, it's fairly normal on these. But don't leave it, deal with it ASAP. 6 weeks is too long really Wayne. ;)

Cheers Chris :y

Syme did check for oil in the plug wells about 2 weeks ago, all clear mate

Hopefully can get it sorted next Sunday

I've noticed the idling revs going up and down when stood still

Hopefully when gaskets are replaced, she'll go even better

I only do 40 miles a week over 4 days
So I'll try not to drive her until my drive to Oxford next Sunday
(About 22 miles)

You should clear the breathers at the same time as replacing cam cover gaskets. The gaskets blow when the breathers are blocked and the crank case pressure finds some other way of escaping.

Rang Vauxhall, told me the gaskets and o rings don't come with sealant and it's not needed?

Is this True?

Price for the above including VAT is £101 ouch!!!

Have a look for the oil leak before buying any parts. Given that it started when the oil was changed, I'd make sure the oil filter housing is not leaking. ;)
