General Discussion Area / 3% Inflation my A**e
« on: 15 June 2008, 19:21:29 »
The government tell us inflation was 3% last month. Presumably this is to give us a feeling of well being and to keep wage claims low.

But how is this 3% figure possible. We all know that food, council tax, heating, petrol have gone up by 20% or more in the last year.

I've looked into this and inflation is calculated by a "shopping basket" of approximately 650 supposedly everyday items each month.

It includes the aforementioned heating petrol etc. but also includes many items that we buy infrequently and which are DEFLATING.

Eg - Digital cameras, Sat Navs, MP3 players, LCD TV, Broadband, Clothes, Fridges.

These items and many others should not be included in the inflation statistics, afterall you buy bread and milk everyday, a TV once every few years. They bring inflation down to give an unrealistic figure in the real world.

As the saying goes "There's lies , damn lies, and statistics."

Went  to the scrappers toget a 3.2v6 badge to no avail. Could only get a 2.0. How does the saying go. Speak softly carry a big stick.

My 3.2 estate has a 2.0 badge on its rump. Makes for a lot of head scratching amongst the hot hatch boys.

General Discussion Area / Road Tax a Fairer Way
« on: 13 June 2008, 17:32:33 »
If the Governments pricing for Road tax is to be based purely on CO2 output, then surely the question they should be asking is not what type of car do you own, but how much do you drive the car you own.

Presumably a V6 Omega putting out roughly 250grms CO2 driven 6000 miles a year, would give out no more CO2 than say super mini giving out a much smaller 125grms Co2 driven 12000 miles a year.

I therefore think that road tax should be banned completely and tax put directly onto the cost of petrol (yeah, yeah, I know we are already taxed 60% on every litre we buy)

Obviously you cannot please everybody, and people who do very high mileages would probably be better off under the old tax sytem, but by and large I think it is a much fairer way than what the Governement is planning for 2009.

It also means you will not pay the same road tax for a £1000 Vauxhall Omega as you would for  Bugatti Veyron or Zonda, and it would also encourage you to think more about using the car for unnecessary trips

you need to get into bikes lizzie  :y

What!  Get on two wheels Albitz?  Those bikes scare me to death ever since on went on my Dad's Lambaretta Scooter as a pillion passenger in 1965.  Love the look of many bikes, but could never go on one! :o :o

Give me 4 wheels any day! ;D :y

Yes you should Lizzie get on a bike. In the late 1970's I was nearly wiped out on my Honda 400/4 by a woman in a white 2000 GXL Mark 3 Cortina with a Black Vinyl Roof

Wasn't you was it ::)

Need to sell 3.2 (ex plod estate) on this site, but told I need to be Junior member.

How many posts do I need to get rid of my OOF Virgin Tag :-?

Just 50 for selling a car; 250 for parts.
 ;)

Thanks for that Lizzie Zoom ( A 3.2 ex cop car would suit you down to the ground) ;D ;D ;D

Not quick enough for her.

She only ever ask's 2 questions.

Does it do 60 in sub 5's
and
will it do 200mph

I'm used to 10.something second quarter mile times, but sadly not in ex plod Omega. Which is sub 3 to 60 mph

I have designed several websites that have eventually achieved first page ranking on Google and Ask

The best way is to put meta tags in the html heading of your index page. These tags have key words and phrases attached to them on what you would consider a visitor might use. ie Omega. Omega club. Google likes these, and also likes the same words spread over the pages of the website. The more Omega is mentioned the higher the ranking etc.

Other ways are creating links to all similar websites. The more links to other websites and pages the better. Link to anything that can reciprocate a link for you.

I found that by adding my website to certain websites and placing a link back to their site the greater Google liked it.

Hope this is of some help

« on: 05 June 2008, 19:51:47 »
Took my new 2.6 V6 manual on a long run to Wales (400 miles). Tried to drive economically most of the time - 5th gear wherever possible, little overtaking, although was over 100mph several times on the motorway, 115mph at one point.

Check the trip on the way back, it said 32.6 (is that good?)

Anyone know how accurate the trip computer figures are? ::)

Not totally sure what you're talking about Marie, but if it is what I think it is my wife's got it too, and they are usually benign if they grow very quickly (almost overnight)

Hope this is some comfort to you.

As always best to see GP straight away

Keep us informed

most saloons dont have rear wipers....   :-/

I've never owned a saloon car or estate that didn't have a rear wiper.

You'd have to go back to the 1970's for saloons not to have a rear wiper

I cannot recall what saloons in at least the popular ranges had / have rear wipers! :o :o :o

Could you please list them? ;)

One that immediately springs to mind........was the
Ford Orion saloon ....dunno about being popular tho  ;D

Volvo 340 saloon. Mitsubishi carisma.

If you can put a man on the moon in 1969, it should not be beyond the wit of man to fit a rear wiper to a £20-£30,000 premium saloon.

I don't take on board whats been said about aerodynamics, any way, Enzo Ferrari was supposed to have said "Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines" (With regard to slippery cars)

« on: 01 June 2008, 16:05:02 »
Have always owned in the past Omega Estates. This 2.6cd is the first saloon I have bought.

May sound crazy but I've just realised that it has no rear wiper. When the car is standing still the water just sits on the back screen, making reversing difficult.

What was Vauxhall thinking of omitting a rear wiper off a £20,000 car when new.  Seems crazy to me.

Anyone else noticed this problem?

Would I be right in saying that all things being equal that a Omega registered in 2000 will be worth more than an Omega registered after March 2001, when the new Tax laws come into force next year.
