Omega General Help / Have garages stooped so low?
« on: 28 October 2016, 07:04:05 »
hi all

about 4 weeks ago, i put my car in to a local garage, that prepared and took it to get MOT'd, they told me that it needed brakes and a new tyre.

all round i have 235 45R17 97W's, but just noticed tonight that their replacement, on the back axle, is 235 40R17 90, which from my freshly learnt tyre markings search, means a 20.8mm diameter difference!

A) Are my calculations right?
B) isn't this illegal?
C) Therefore should the car have passed the MOT?
D) Most importantly, having just driven to Liverpool and back, 350mile trip, cruising in the motorway fast lane, also country roads in the dark and the wet, how safe was i, and anyone near me?

i'm hoping that it's an apprentice screw up, not that a garage would knowingly do it just to get rid of old stock

any insight would be most welcome   :y

Omega General Help / driver hot/passenger cold
« on: 05 September 2016, 21:39:29 »
hi all

quick last minute Q's for the day, as car is booked into garage tomorrow:

got aircon regassed today, now it does hot on drivers side, and cold on passengers - is this HBV, as forum pages i saw don't specify different sides?

while there, rad leak was noticed on aluminium connection bits, so they suggested replacing it, so i bought one and have it booked in for tomorrow.

it's a 2.6 elite auto estate 2003, which i bought 6 years ago with 93k, and now has 128k - i was told the cam and pump had recently been done, at the time.

as youz have far more knowledge, and experience than me - would it seem sensible to cancel tomorrow, and get everything as a job lot, with cam belt & pump?

if so, are there any repairing oofers, that are known, north east, newcastle way

thanks for any yay or nays  :)

Omega General Help / Alternator
« on: 27 August 2013, 16:54:38 »
Just looking for advice

My alternator has gone, it was a 2nd hand replacement that was put in 8 months ago, what is the general opinion, to buy 2nd hand again, look for a refurber (?), pay the big new one price, or any other ideas?

I'm in the middle of moving, I need the car, but my heads too battered at the min to make a wise decision - any suggestions welcome

Omega General Help / Battery light came on
« on: 27 August 2013, 01:06:42 »
Just seeing if anyone is awake,
Am on the way home and my battery light has come on, I did change the alternator for a second hand one 6 months ago, so that has probably died.

Are there any suggestions for the repair guy to try when he arrives, rather than just towing me and the car home?
Do I remember old posts about crimping the wires, or should he have all this covered in tests etc?
I put a new battery when the alt went 6 months ago too
Thanks to any suggestions as I sit in this garage forecourt waiting :-)

hi all

i've just had a local garage change my knackered alternator for a working £30 used one

i haven't had the bill yet, but the owner has said it'll be pricey as they had to drain the water system among other things, and they had my car for 3 hours

when i gave them it I asked if they wanted my haines which explains how to do it, i nearly suggested leaving my laptop with the pics and description on the maintenance guides

i forsee an arguement happening - can anyone tell me (ballpark figure) how much it should cost and how long it should take to do the job

thanks for any replies  :)

hi all

after my last post about worn tyre camber problems, i was advised to get all bushes, wishbones etc checked by a garage i trust, unfortunately i don't have one  :'(

could anyone suggest a garage, or an Omega friendly person in north yorkshire, preferably around Ripon area that could help with the check

as suggested i've spoken to nigel langs garage in bolton about full wheel alignment and as said all the other bits need to be right first

(i'm in a wheelchair which is why i'm not underneath myself)

again thanks in advance for any help  :)

Omega General Help / why one worn side of one tyre?
« on: 10 April 2013, 11:26:41 »
hi all

i replaced all 4 tyres 8 months ago and have found that the inside of the front passenger side tyre is nearly down to the cord, but the outside of the tread and the other 3 tyres are fine

a garage told me that it was because of the steering linkage having 8 joints a side, which if each is out by 0.5mm, then that's possible 8mm out, which is what causes the problem and there's nothing i can do about it

i've looked through the forum pages but not found similar

can anyone verify this, or advise me what i should be doing

thanks Martin  :)

General Discussion Area / Loo-Knee does it again
« on: 24 April 2012, 23:21:04 »
I just wanted to throw a big thanks out to Daz for doing a service and cambelt change for me   :) :) :)

it makes all the difference using someone that knows the cars - rather than Vauxhall....he noticed and replaced a small pipe that was missing that affected performance, then when changing the cam belt sorted the timing out, but properly this time - everything's running smoother and better now.

i would recommend him for doing an excellent job at a great price

thanks again

Martin :)

Omega General Help / Fantastic help & really good value
« on: 08 March 2010, 22:50:35 »
Hi everyone,

We're all always looking for value for money, especially when it comes to people working on our pride and joy.

My miggies engine warning light came on, then after 3 miles it was running absolutely horribly so I had to abandon it in a hotel car park. Unfortunately I don't trust garages much after having bad diagnoses by mechanics that are supposed experts.

I put in a call to Darth Loo-knee who i didn't know, but had been recommended and at his earliest chance(day & a half) he travelled the massive journey (really) to where my car was, taking with him potential pieces to fix it, but if not he was able to tow the car all the way back to his workshop.

After plugging the computer into the car he was able to diagnose the fault, unfortunately the nearest replacement part was about 80 miles away, which he thankfully went and got, keeping me posted all the time about what was happening.

After the part was fitted, the car started perfectly - problem solved.

He even stopped me from spending money on the car by getting unnecessary work done by him as it wasn't needed.

To sum up, Darth Loo-knee  really helped me out when I wasn't sure what I was going to do. He's really approachable & doesn't talk down to you, even with my limited knowledge & had all angles covered. I also couldn't have been happier with the size of the bill after all the effort he put in.

So if you're someone that can't afford vauxhall prices, can't physically do the work yourself, can't find the time to do the work or just don't want to, then my recommendation would be to look no further.

Martin

P.s. I may be guffing on, but all this has just happened today & my Miggy has come back to life  :y

Omega General Help / metalic paint
« on: 08 August 2009, 05:21:14 »
hi all

when i got home at 2am the other day, i scraped the passenger side rear door as i too tiredly turned into my alley 50 feet from my house - a corner I've done a thousand times without a problem.

The plastic door panel took the most of it, but it has also scraped the paint & misshapen the door a little.
the paint's z147 82l metalic - is metalic paint worth working on, could i get a decent finish or should i be extravigant & ask someone breaking a suitable miggy & just changing the door ?

thanks for any help  - martin

P.s. I just wanted to mention that markey mark did my cam belt & a service last week, he also told me i needed to get a new MAF Sensor which i fitted yesterday - it's running absolutely fantastic now, purring like a kitten & it's got all it's power back, not dropping a beat in any gear. I feel a good job's worth mentioning, a great price even though he had to work around the LPG pipes etc.  Every time I start it I've got a massive smile on my face   ;D ;D ;D
