Some here may find this familiar...
Car surplus to requirements, so has been un insured for a while, tax recently expired. Need to move it 40miles.
Insure and tax it. Drive it away. Expensive.
Or tow/trailer it. I don't have a vehicle big enough to tow, so Question here is do I have the required license to drive a flatbed if I could find one to hire? Bike and car license cover it?
Car is approaching two ton in weight.
Further thought, it's a private sale, would it be easier for the owner to insure it temporarily, just to get it taxed for 6months? Then cancel the insurance once taxed? Not aware if an Mot issue, presume Mot in place. I can drive it away then. Not sure if sorned though.
-
If you passed your car test before 1997 you can drive up to 7.5 ton GVW :y or do you know anyone with trade plates then no need to tax
-
How heavy is the vehicle? EDIT: Please read the manual
As said, old gits middle aged folk like us will have the 7.5 tonne entitlement, so ought to be able to drive a vehicle that will uplift it if it's a "normal" sized car. Not if it's a steam loco, admittedly.

Unless its a small transporter that the car may well fit onto but may well exceed the GVW if the car weighs 2 tonnes
-
Would have thought Driver with Trade Plates for a couple of hours would be the cheapest (beer tokens) option.
-
Quick call to a self drive car transport hire firm reveals I would be legal. But the omega exceeds thier load limit of 1.5tons.
-
couldn't you tow it with your mig with an a frame ??
-

Car needs to be road legal for that.

new continuous insurance rule might put kybosh on that
-
yeah your right kevin a was just reading a thread on pistonheads about it..funny how i see 4x4's towing other 4x4 on a frames going to a place called frickley for some off road fun..

Yes.. Not saying it doesn't happen. ::) It's the worst combination, IMHO. A 2 tonne unbraked trailer. :o
Personally, having experienced haw well an Omega tows at the weight limit, I'd rather chuck it on a Brian James and take a risk on someone spotting it's overweight. At least I know I can stop the combination if something goes wrong.

yes if the cars wheels are on the road, it has to be legal. Towed or not, makes no odds.

That would've been a transit size flat bed which is 3.5 ton GVW, you need a cargo/LDV 45 size but without a digital tachograph
-
just read a thread that said if u lift the front wheels like on a towing dolly then u don't have to be legal....but then u fall fowl of the 750kg /unbraked load law

That's how I just picked up the Jag - although I heard some post offices will refuse to tax a car on temporary insurance cover so I insured it for 12 months, sent the seller the PDF insurance cert, he went off and taxed it and I turned up the next day with the price of the car + price of the tax and drove it home.
Now I'll cancel the insurance and cash in the tax..
Almost certainly cheaper - even at the full cost of the tax - than hiring a flat bed big enough to carry a 2 tonne car.
-
Chris,
If you can lay your mitts on a braked trailer, I have access to a vehicle that can legally pull it.

There's a place near me who hire them out at £30+VAT per day.

That's cheap! May need to get their details off you when I need to pick up bits of Dax :) The last braked trailer I hired was more like £60+VAT!
-
Last one I hired was around £100. :(

One word of advice, though. Don't confess to getting get a puncture.

;D Expensive bill? Other than that their rates seem extremely reasonable; £30 even for the tilting bed trailer..

Charged for a new tyre. A can of tyre weld would have been cheaper. :-X
Then again, I was glad that the previous hirer hadn't bu66ered the spare, so... ::)
-
.. and I suspect it could all have been avoided by not parking it next to Westfield's scrap metal bin. ;D

That's was what I suggested in the end, and tbh if a cars being sold as a going concern, it really should have tax, I'd want to at least be driven in it to make sure it all works.

I thought the new rule was the total combination must not exceed 3500 kgs., else you need another license.
Big 4 x 4's and twin axle caravans are causing drivers probems at the minute.

Ditto glider trailers (and in some cases, drivers are having to choose lighter cars to tow them to stay under the limit - how daft is that?). However, that's due to the default level of entitlements which are applied to a new driving licence and, with the greatest respect to the OP, unless he took up driving "late in life" it won't be an issue. ;)
It is, I'm told, an issue when you reach the age at which you have to re-apply for your licence but I wouldn't expect someone as youthful as yourself to be worrying about that, AA. ::)
You need to take an additional towing test to get the entitlement, IIRC.

I hope it includes "How to reverse a trailer" ;) (Ah, the comedy on Saturday morning as Mark and I tried to reverse my little Erde into the garage .. comedy because despite my shouting, he couldn't hear my directions, didn't understand my hand signals, and we ended up going forward and backward lots .. until he reversed it into the MR2, anyway. D'oh! Good job that side of the bumper was already knackered after someone drove into the car while parked a year or two ago ;D)

Some people can't reverse a car, let alone car & trailer ;D

Thanks Martian, but I think the guy needs to pull his finger out tbh. Or it's a no go. :-\

True! I actually thought that to myself just now as I swung the (enormous) Jag onto the drive backwards beside the Omega after doing the slalom of other cars parked at the end of the road like numpties (and you've seen how small the end of the road is) with only one functioning wing mirror.. I wonder how many people (present company excepted, because we're all awesome driving gods ;)) could do that without breaking a sweat?
I know I work with plenty who'd have bounced off every nearby object in the process and still failed! ;D

chrisgixer clear your inbox.my bro is a trader with plates if you want car moving.

Cleared, but don't worry, as said, he needs to tax it. :y

Its a lot easier to reverse a caravan than it it is to reverse those little box trailers,I grew up on a farm so have known how to reverse a trailer for many years but my poxy little car trailer will still catch me out now and again :-[

Indeed. You can't even see the damned things through the rear of an Omega until it's at about 80 degrees to the direction of motion of the car. ;D

Very true - I was always taught that the shorter the draw bar/wheelbase, the quicker it'll snap round on you.. as we proved on Saturday. Repeatedly ;D

Yep, that's true..... ::) ::)

Glider trailers are fun. Can't miss it behind you, yet you can see around it. Plenty of length from drawbar to wheel. Just as much from the wheels to the back, though.
That overhang at the back can be a pain. A small error at the wheels is quite a large one by the time it gets to the back of the trailer. ;D

We have a Multi Car Policy with Admiral, been some interesting movements / policy changes and back again, with vehicles recently ::) ::) ::)
Our old, soon to be gone, Omega is now on a 30 day, renewable policy....in part because I need it taxed and insured to be able to sort it and get rid. Secondly, as I understand it, if it is taxed it has to be insured, even on the drive ::) ::)
-
Am I going to get another phone call ::)
TBH Chris, I'd have a look about for someone who does vehicle movements and see if they can do it on a return journey ;)
-
Depending on how long ago the Omega was last taxed, I would take a days insurance and drive it, if you get pulled you pay the back tax ::)

Or best case the back Tax to the month you acquired the vehicle or become the new V5 owner.

Tax ran out end of Feb. I had that thought, but thought they'd closed the loop hole...?

Drive it there at 2am and just chance it? :-X

Don't suppose pleading ignorance will help for one minute.
Is this your vehicle sir? Yes, well, probably not on your system, I just bought it.
Our records show its not taxed.... Oh sh!t. Do you know, I didn't even look. Whoops. :(
