Did a thorough inspection and clean of the handbrake drum and shoes yesterday . I took the brake PADS out to clean and apply copperease but on one side the metal retainer on the back was falling to bits "is it called anti rattle thingy ?" anyway this was the cause of the sound of me dragging cans along behind me .
So not having a replacement metal thing i left it off but should i replace it asap or will it be ok to leave off ;)
-
I binned them when I did the wifes the other day.....but the new pads did have like a rubber pad on the back side......I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
-
Personaly never fitted them.
Always made sure the caliper was clean and put plenty of copper slip on the back to stop them sticking :y
-
Nice one ;) I copper greased the back of the pads and a small smear on the pins . Lovely and quiet now what with the new drop links and track rods and no rattle rattle from that plate catching the disc . Handbrake adjusted as well ...smashing ;)

I would (and do) refit (or replace if its unusable).

What are they for though :-\
-
I'm going to go out on a limb here (not having done a pad change on mine yet, despite the rampant squealing) - anti squeal shims.
A good smearing of copper grease probably achieves the same thing, at least until it dries out and starts to squeal like a stuck pig.. but if you're a bit of a stickler for doing things 'right' then it's not 'right' without it. If you see what I mean.

So would I. GM must have had their reason to put them in and they do have a price so if they were not needed they would not have been fitted in factory.

Will refit new ones when pad replacement is needed , always wondered what they were called . I take it by not having them its not an MOT fail :-\ I have copper greased the pads .
-
Nah - not an MOT fail, the pads just might start squealing prematurely :) Assuming I'm right about them being anti squeal shims, of course! Based on the description, though, that's all I can see them being.
Some pad manufacturers (notably EBC) give you a chunk of the rubberised stuff to stick on their pads instead (though on the MR2 I recycled the OE shims instead), anyway :)

The passenger side rear one was only half intact and was rubbing on the disc causing the sound like i was draging bake bean tins along ::) it just fell out with a poke ::)
-
They stop the pads rattling around in the caliper, when applying the breaks you may well get a click/knock/clack type noise as the disc moves the pads forward and back.
There may not be much play where the pads sit in the caliper, but you can bet there will be soon enough with no springs at all.
Best to fit them, doesn't take long.
-
I had the clicking of the pads quite a bit before i cleaned the caliper pins and brake pads but since re fitting without the anti squeal plates its stopped ..must be the copper grease i applied. Advice understood though , will refit on replacement

This copper slip is incredible stuff. Wonder what else it will fix...?

It fixes everything! Except for OOF-crippleitis, sadly. ;)

I had to kick the passenger rear wheel off from underneath the car for quite some time as it was stuck solid >:( a smear of the gold grease on the hub will hopefully fix that ;)
-
Chris in your post are you referring to shims or springs.
-
I think eatmydust is talking about the flat thin metal things that clip on to your pads...........defo fit the anti squeal things cos they also help to keep the pads off the discs when your not breaking........
-
The metal plate thingy that fits between the pad pins on the back i meant , not the plate that sits behind the pads ...there wasnt any of them anyway :-\
-
Just like the metal plate in the picture ... thats what was corroded and broken up and what i left off .

Ok but whats their purpose :-\

Anti squeal.......they also keep the pads away from the disc when your not breaking.......
