Hello,
I did my manual gearbox swap quite happily and car has starter since multiple times...
recently hasnt started so been bump starting it, tested my starter inhibitor wiring and its fine
anyway battery is currently on charge just to eliminate that although headlights come on fine etc, rear blind doesnt come up though if this helps
checked earth strap under front passenger side of engine and is ok and checked earth strap to starter motor its self and looks ok!
thanks in advance - atm looks like starter motor but its gone all of a sudden if it has

May well just be flat battery. Starter solenoid is a small drain compared to the actual starter. Lights etc will normally work with a battery that is too flat to turn the starter. Hope that is all it is, would be the first thing I would try, esp if the blind motor isn't working either.

Check battery for charge as well as earth connections ;)
-
As previous post . . My money is on it being a duff / flat battery or bad earth connection /s :-\ :-\
Starter motors on Migs are pretty much bullet proof IMO :o :o :o

battery has bin on charge and still not cranking :/
solenoid still clicks though and managed to get smoke earlier lol! pretty sure its fubar'd but very suprised!
will test it when i have it off tomorrow though with a battery :y
thanks
alex
p.s i should hope its not a duff battery as its a 3 month old bosch battery :P
-
Have you got a voltage tester? After standing overnight you should have at least 13V on the battery.

If your battery is charged ok (>13Volts) then problem most likely a bad earth. Check earth on battery, and try it with a jump lead connected from earth point on engine to bodywork earth.

thanks for the replies, wheres the other earth, i know about the earth on the bottom of the engine at front, wheres the other?
thanks

From where? Don't think smoke is good. No battery likes being drained of charge, no matter what quality it is. Can you jump start it instead of bumping it? Would rule out starter then. Although will be best to sort out the smoke issue first.

Earths - any good clean metallic part of engine, and other end any good clean metallic part of bodywork/"chassis"

had bonnet up while holding the key in cranking position and smoke came up from starter motor area
i can try jump starting it but doubt it'll crank, i tried cranking it after it'd been on charge for a bit and still didnt even attempt to turn
thanks
alex
p.s dbug i meant where abouts are the earth straps located? i know where the one is at the front of the engine but where are the others lol?

Sorry mate misunderstood the question ::)
What I was trying to show was that by connecting a good earth from engine to body/chassis with a jump lead and then trying cranking if it worked and no smoke you've found your problem. Solution - put a new permanent earth lead in. May not be earth fault, but have seen these symptoms in the past on other makes and in most cases this was a solution.

right, update....
i've got the starter motor off, and got a replacement...
tried both on another battery, tried on another battery in another car...
the sprocket clicks up but doesnt turn at all on both :/
anybody know best place to get cheap but decent starter motors, just thinking is it worth pissing about with second hand ones when i can get a brand new one
cheapest i've seen so far is eurocarparts which is £140ish with the discount of the old starter motor - yes i know they arnt cheap lol!
thanks
alex
p.s i've got not 1 oppsed starter motor but 2! i must be lucky :P
even tried hitting the solenoid with a hammer to make sure it wasnt sticking and was still the same

Alex , I am a bit confused with your explanation as highlighted above .
But my suggestions are :
Ask the question on here of how to properly test a starter motor that is off of the car (not sure on this myself)
Do you know the second starter you have is a good one in the first place?
Although I said earlier that omega starters are usually "bullet proof" . . smoke coming from the starter area on turn over is not looking good IMO
Have you tried the second starter fitted to the car ? Guess maybe you want to make sure it is a good one first though
The battery would be the least likely culprit IMO as its a good make & only 3 months old. But still a possibility though.
As for a brand new starter . . I think I would go for a known good used one from one of the breakers on here first off.
just some suggestions until someone more experienced in this comes along, hope it may help :y :y :y :

sorry my explanation didnt make sense...
i've had the starter motor off the car tested....fubar'd :P so i must have collared it out lmao!!!

thanks for the replies
