On my home late last night (almost early morning) a deer decided to run out in front of me. I was travelling about 70 mph at the time and the thump was considerable. Deer didn't go under the car, as far as I can tell. It just vanished. Think it went over the top. Either way, when my step-father hit a deer at 30 mph in his '99 Mondeo it took the bumper, front wing and headlight with it. I thought he'd hit a brick wall. So, when I got home I was expecting the worst. Went out this morning to inspect the damage and I'm staggered. The bumper is cracked, fair enough. The near-side headlamp is a couple of millimetres too low on the inside. A bit of plastic has snapped off from under the near-side headlamp but other than that she looks good. Obviously until I get the bumper off I won't be able to tell if there is any damage behind but there are no fluid leaks.
These cars are built solid! Certainly I'd rather have a crash in one of these than my step-father's old Mondeo!
On the downside it's another job to do in my "free" time.

Venison tonight?

Dangerous things, these deers. Good news, not too much damage.
Had a Granada a few years ago and struck one. Well, more accurately it struck the moving car. Travelling along a road and the deer ran across the road straight into the side of the moving car. Both doors caved in, but nothing wrong with the B pillar. Door cards off, pushed the doors back out with my foot and all was fine. Counted myself fortunate. :y

Yes, I count myself incredibly lucky.
Venison tempting but I'd heard the wild meat round here can be a bit wormy and I like mine VERY rare. Also, there's no chuffin' way I'm standing around in that section of road in the middle of the night, let alone trying to lug a deer carcass around: it's dangerous!

Hit a badger doing 60 a few years back while driving a vec ....smashed the fog light/split water bottle and took a chunk out of bumper ...didnt fancy badger burgers :(

Worked with a guy who dined like a king around this time of year. He had about 15 pheasants hanging in his shed at the peak of the season! :D

I hit a Sikka deer last year at Arne, near Wareham. It was dark, it just ran out in front of the car. My speed was about 40mph, possibly a tad slower. Anyhow there was a massive thump, the sight of four hooves across the front of the windscreen, followed by the body :(
However, after an extensive search....nothing was found. No damage to the car except body hair snagged to the bodywork.
One very lucky deer and one solidly built car :y

That happens around here....being as most of the land around here, is owned by the nobility, pheasants are like a plague. I know people who go out deliberately to hit pheasants in the country lanes. ;)

We are pestered by red deer around here and whereas I have no time for them due to them eating all the garden plants and damaging my wifes car a couple of years ago after a " hit " the saddest and most upsetting thing I've came across recently was finding a deer mortally injured on the road but still concious and attempting to get up and away .
Having to wait on the vet arriving to despatch the poor thing was most disturbing . :(
-
Yes, felt sorry for the deer and then panic for my mig.
Looks like the plastic attachments for the headlamp snapped, that's why it is hanging a tad low. Other than that and the bumper, no damage. Incredible.
Terbert, oddly enough I was near High Wycombe when it happened!

Deer Strike?
I didn't know that they had a Union! ::)
-
The least you can do after hitting one, is to make sure the poor thing is dead,
this time of year the bucks are claiming territories, so pushing younger males out, they dont know the area so wander about and often get run down.
I see a few coming from the side of the road to cross and I slow down.

They're on a hiding to nothing in Bucks. Its bluer than a Roy Chubby Brown gig.

I don't doubt that at all, mate....Muntjack are well plentiful round here....sad to say...its a common sight to see dead ones by the roadside :( They wander through our gardens with impunity....the woods are full of them

My mate hit one years ago when he was 18 and driving a Fiat 127!! Remarkably he killed the Deer and the Fiat was relatively unscathed!! :o :o :o
So he's stood in the road looking at this dead Deer and wondering what to do, when along comes the local farmer in a Landy, who sized up the situation (Confused young lad + rusty Fiat 127 + dead Deer = free venison!!) got my mate to help him load the Deer in the Landy and told him to come and see him in about a weeks time. ;)
Which he did and got given a bag of frozen venison!!! 8) The funny thing was that he didn't want to admit to his parents that he'd hit a deer, so he gave it all away!! :o Lovely it was!!! :D :) 8)

As a matter of interest to those of you "wishing" to hit a deer for the meat ....
UK law states that if you kill a wild animal, including those classed as game, and pick it up and take it home for consumption,... you are guilty of poaching.
Whether the car behind you can take it is a moot point, as you could be guilty of "taking by finding" which is a criminal offence in its own right. Essentially you cannot take what belongs to someone else.
Proving who owns a dead wild animal could be a tad tricky I suppose !!! :)

ive seen a pic of a bmw that hit a deer and the complete deer had gone through the grill and wrapped itself round the engine.
not nice

Says a Townie....... ::) ::) Us country folk do not recognise such laws, road kill is fair game, swmbo killed a deer and an Omega, someone else picked up the caucus......it did not / was not owned by anyone.... :)

Entwood is right....as I said in an earlier post, around here is 'Nobility Land'....the gamekeepers are out all the time patrolling the lanes, and they will have you if they see you hit and take a pheasant..........my brother got collored ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'd love to say yes but only spotted it after you!
