Hi There, I'm new to this forum, so this is "Virgin Territory" for me !
Have this issue which is worrying me with my Petrol 2.2 CD.
When on a standstill and moving off, my gearbox kicks down intermittently and unexpectedly?
This does't happen if I move off slowly but always does if i choose to apply more pressure to the throttle.......?
It's starting to worry me slightly and was wondering if anyone would know what this could be...?
Could it be the gearbox sensor....? Or could it be something a little more sinister?
Please advise.....!!!
Looking forward to your replies !
P.s. Car has done 80,000 miles
no leaks under car etc.
No warning Lights on dash etc
-
is that what it is designed too do???
-
Errrr.... No.
I've driven automatics for the last 15 years, erratic changes are not meant to happen on level road.
Maybe i didn't explain this properly, I'm more referring to the erratic changes down, without any throttle pressure, now that shouldn't happen right ?
-
think you will be told on here to do a atf change..cos old transmission fluid causes loads of probs :y
-
as above or a update on software.. :y
-
Guys, many thanks for the replies........I can narrow this issue down even more, i've noticed that transmission has problems only when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear, sometimes it just doesnt wanna know....?
How do i go about updating software.....could anyone kindly direct me please.....?
Thanks again....! :y

Put your location in your profile, few members around with the equipment for upgrades

I'm in east London.
I'm gonna change use gearbox oil, would you recommend I change anything else whilst in there, like filters?
I'm hopeless with cars so gonna get it done by someone...!
Cheers for your thoughts....!

If you intend getting the auto box oil replaced have a good read of the proceedure in the maintenance section. That will give you the answer to most questions you may have.
Will work out around £100 in parts and if you intend doing it yourself get some old carpet and lots of rags..messy job ;D

I wouldn't change anything until the fault is fixed. A firmware update won't achieve that and it could introduce another variable that we don't need at this stage.
First step is always to check level and condition of fluid. Drain some out and see what colour it is. Likely to be brown and clear if it hasn't been changed recently. If it's black, opaque or has bits in it, then a faulty gearbox is likely. If not, top up with fluid (with the engine running) and see if that helps.
Also, run the selector lever through each position and check that the yellow LEDs beside the selector follow each position accurately without flickering.
Does it ever go into limp home (stuck in 3rd gear) or display a gearbox fault in the MID?
Also, worth checking the engine for fault codes as this is a 2.2. Failed cam sensor can often send the gearbox into a tizz.
Does it start easily or need a bit more cranking than usual?
Has the engine management light been coming on at all?

Kevin,
Thanks, I'll do as you've mentioned and shall report back my findings.
Cheers buddy!

OK :y
You can drain a little fluid out for checking by unscrewing the level plug on the side of the gearbox sump with the engine stopped. Collect a little in a jam jar and have a look at it.
When topping up again, you need DEXRON 4 fluid. Fill with the engine running. Start it up, remove the level plug and with the car level, add fluid until it starts to run out of the level plug again, then replace the plug before stopping the engine. (the level rises when the engine is stopped, so it'll overflow).
If there's no history of the fluid being changed it's worth doing that, but let's get to the bottom of the problem first.

typo alert....Dex 3 actually!
most go for http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-965-fuchs-titan-atf-4000-multifunctional-automatic-transmission-fluid.aspx
which is a very good fluid

i keep calling it dex 4 tooo....cos i use fuchs titan 4000....
if they called it titan 3000 it wouldnt confuse me as much ;D

*************UPDATE*********************
I have folowed the instructions above, first thing first,
---Changed The transmission oil, checked oil, appears fine !
----Filter cleaned and replaced.
----- DEXRON III used as per instructions in MAintenance section.
Unfortunately i still have a problem (Although doesnt occur all the time) Gear has a problem shifting up into 4th. Shifting down isn't an issue.
NOW !
I tried running the selector through all the positions, and they're all fine APART FROM GEAR 3. THE LED's flickers between 3 and R then all the LEDS Illuminate constantly......!
Oh and the engine management light also came on the dash today, after the gear slapped itself into fourth !!!!
Any ideas ? I'm getting worried it might be an expensive issue now !
Please tell me its not !!! :-\
Thanks again.

i would go down this road next

dirty selector switch cause your light faults and it wont cost anything to give it a clean
-
what i would do is go to the search bar and type in gearbox selector switch
then you will get to read other members problems caused by this..and it will give you more idea as to what is involved and see how it relates to some of you probs :y

gave him that link further up rob :y :y but it alls helps to go search bar and read other members issues like you have..i alls do that :y

Thanks, you guys are brilliant....!

If the engine management light is also coming on, it would be worth reading the engine codes, but the selector switch needs some attention too, as said.

***************UPDATE*******************
Firstly apologies for late response been out the country for a while....! ;D
My gearbox issue has been resolved, and just for reference I thought it would only be couteous and beneficial to others in forum should they have sinilar problems.......so here it goes...!
First and formost I change the GEARBOX OIL, FILTER as suggested, no joy.
I was then prompted (From Forum) to look into gearbox selector switch etc.
I took car to a very reputable gearbox specialist In PERIVALE, LONDON. NUDGEMATICS.
Believe it or not he'd diagnosed the fault, over a phone call ???
What he said was the issue would be nost certainly the gearbox solenoid, as this was a common fault in the OMEGA's.
After a short spin he'd diagnosed it was the SOLENOID that changes from gear 2-3 (apparently very common).
GEARBOX solenoid changed for a very reasonable price....!
Problem solved......!
We have one very happy OMEGA DRIVER AGAIN......!
Hope it helps should anyone have the same, or similar issue....! :y
Big thanks to you guys for your help.......! :y
Car was hooked upto the machine, and
-
Thanks for the update NisCAPE :y
Still slightly concerned you may still have a *potential* range switch problem, so keep an eye on that :y
-
***************FURTHER UPDATE*******************
THEBOY............Your recent post was absolutely spot on mate ! :y
Unfortunately for me, it's only been about a month or so since I had the solenoids changed in the gearbox, NOW NOT THE SAME BUT SIMILAR ISSUE !
Car is in LIMP MODE, only have Use of 3RD GEAR????
Issues are as follows:-
Maintenance light constantly Illuminated !
The LED's on the GEARBOX are like a CHRISTMAS TREE, sometimes all are illuminated, sometimes just one, sometimes none at all.....? :-[
Are we talking GEARBOX SELECTOR SWITCH HERE......? Where can i source one cheap? Or would it be an idea to Just clean it? I'm thinking its probably broken on the inside somewhere?
One think i have also noticed is that when i nudge the gearbox selector stick, the LED's calm down and driving is ok then for a while until, bang, LIMP MODE AGAIN !!!!
PLEASE HELP >>>>>>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-[
-
Yes, Range Switch. New, stupid money. Get a known good one from a breaker here.
-
Cheers Buddy !
I've seen one, apparently tried and tested, £69......lot cheaper than £250 i suppose !
That a reasonable price ?
???
-
Expensive in my opinion. Last one I sold I charged £25 plus a fiver delivery iirc. I might have another one. Will check today.
-
I agree with Albitz, way too dear for 2nd hand. The prices Albitz quoted is about right IMHO :y
-
ALBITZ.......If you have another lying around, I'll snap it off ya for the same price .....!
Please tell me you have, and £25 nicker sounds a lot better and cheaper than £70 Nicker !
Keep me updated please !

I was racking whats left of my brain last night trying to remember what it was I was supposed to have a look for.Just had a look at this thread to pass the time and now I know. :-[ ;D
Im just about to have a cuppa tea,and I will then go and hunt through my boxes of spares. :y
-
Sorry mate.Dont have one. :(
Put a wanted ad in the test zone and admins will move it to the for sale/wanted section. Hopefully someone will have one at a sensible price. :y
