2.2 CD GEARBOX ISSUE ANY IDEAS....???
« on: 14 June 2012, 17:39:57 »

Hi There, I'm new to this forum, so this is "Virgin Territory" for me !

Have this issue which is worrying me with my Petrol 2.2 CD.

When on a standstill and moving off, my gearbox kicks down intermittently and unexpectedly?
This does't happen if I move off slowly but always does if i choose to apply more pressure to the throttle.......?

It's starting to worry me slightly and was wondering if anyone would know what this could be...?

Could it be the gearbox sensor....? Or could it be something a little more sinister?

Please advise.....!!!

Looking forward to your replies !

P.s. Car has done 80,000 miles
no leaks under car etc.
No warning Lights on dash etc

Errrr.... No.

I've driven automatics for the last 15 years, erratic changes are not meant to happen on level road.

Maybe i didn't explain this properly, I'm more referring to the erratic changes down, without any throttle pressure, now that shouldn't happen right ?

If you intend getting the auto box oil replaced have a good read of the proceedure in the maintenance section. That will give you the answer to most questions you may have.

Will work out around £100 in parts and if you intend doing it yourself get some old carpet and lots of rags..messy job ;D

I wouldn't change anything until the fault is fixed. A firmware update won't achieve that and it could introduce another variable that we don't need at this stage.

First step is always to check level and condition of fluid. Drain some out and see what colour it is. Likely to be brown and clear if it hasn't been changed recently. If it's black, opaque or has bits in it, then a faulty gearbox is likely. If not, top up with fluid (with the engine running) and see if that helps.

Also, run the selector lever through each position and check that the yellow LEDs beside the selector follow each position accurately without flickering.

Does it ever go into limp home (stuck in 3rd gear) or display a gearbox fault in the MID?

Also, worth checking the engine for fault codes as this is a 2.2. Failed cam sensor can often send the gearbox into a tizz.

Does it start easily or need a bit more cranking than usual?

Has the engine management light been coming on at all?

OK :y

You can drain a little fluid out for checking by unscrewing the level plug on the side of the gearbox sump with the engine stopped. Collect a little in a jam jar and have a look at it.

When topping up again, you need DEXRON 4 fluid. Fill with the engine running. Start it up, remove the level plug and with the car level, add fluid until it starts to run out of the level plug again, then replace the plug before stopping the engine. (the level rises when the engine is stopped, so it'll overflow).

If there's no history of the fluid being changed it's worth doing that, but let's get to the bottom of the problem first.
