Title: Easy check for dispack
Post by: Radar on 21 August 2012, 17:29:51
Is there an easy check for the dispack without removing lots of stuff?

The issue is when i start up for the first time in the day and change from Park to Drive i get a stuttering cough sound (subsequent start ups are fine).

Have put it on ramps and the exhaust seems fine.

I have bought new spark plugs but do not feel confident enough to fit them.

Car is 2.5 Petrol

Thanks

TBH the Spark Plugs are a doddle on the 2.5 and 3.0, check they are not full of oil or water before you take them out, which could cause the problems your having.

For miss fires (electrical) best to start with Plugs first then leads and Coil Pak last and see ho you get on Radar.

;) ;)

Agreed - plugs are easy to change on drivers side, back one passenger side is awkward (need universal joint on socket ideally)
Then leads, then coil pack :y

Changed the plugs on all bar the back one on the passenger side - finding access is tricky :'( Will have another go tomorrow. The harness with all the wires in doesn't move enough out of the way.

All 3 wells on the drivers side had a tiny amount of oil in them but in my no knowledge opinion not enough to cause a stuttering (I seem to remember i did put a little too much oil in on the last oil change). The 2 wells on the passenger side that i got were bone dry.

I couldn't find a suitable tool in the halfords 150 pro. set to remove plugs so ended up buying a halfords spark plug removal tool - everytime you tighten the plugs the darn rubber washer stays on the plug and is a mission to get out!

Any fault codes?

Halfords 150pc (both new and old type) set has the correct socket for removing plugs.

Check drivers side again in a week or so - any oil returning is not a good sign.

Didn't check for fault codes - thanks for the tip :y

I must be a retard because i tried a few sockets but they just didn't fit as they were too wide for the well :-\

To get onto the # 6 plug I use a 3/8 plug socket onto a 150mm extension/universal swivel with another 150mm extension and then 3/8 ratchet.

Best to get a magnetic socket as the plug will stay in once undone and then just spilt at universal joint and pull out plug.
Fitting is reverse but only fit the plug by hand turning the extension to ensure you don,t cross the thread.

It is fiddly buit can be done.Cable tray needs pulling away and ideally cable tying out the way to give better access.

There are 2 deep style sockets with rubber inserts, in the bottom part of the case ;)

Thanks guys, will try again in the morning. Funny thing is i thought i tried the deep style socket first (just seen now it has a rubber insert) but it didn't fit down the well. I think i'm going senile...... figures since it is the big 40 for me later this year!!

Iirc this car had a "good" leak from the scuttle join rear of pot 6. Is that still sealed, not leaking...?

Where the plugs not changed with the leads..?

Thats right Chris. I have magic taped up the around the culprit areas and it hasn't leaked again.

The plugs were not changed with the leads.

Had another go today at the rear passenger side - could not even get the ht lead off - i will leave for another time.

Its sunny, i'm on a days holiday and i think i'll take the family out. Thanks to all for the advice :y.

BTW i found the spark plug on the halfords set :y - so i took off 3 drivers side plugs again and gave the wells a good clean with a cotton bud taped to a piece of plastic (as i didn't do it yesterday since i couldn't find anything suitable to get down there)

I checked the drivers side this morning and there was no oil ;). Still couldn't get off the rear passenger side :'(

Remove oil filler neck, and put the yellow cap from neck directly on cam cover.

Remove the top of the cable tray - awkward press clips all around it.

Remove lower bit of cable tray

Then you can get enough space to retrieve 2/4/6 CP

Thanks Jaimie :y  Removed casing on the cable tray and swapped over the plug. There was a slight bit of oil in it but i reckon this was left over from the time the cam cover gasket was changed on that side at christmas,

Thankyou to all for your tips / help :y With your help i feel i was able to acheive something constructive :y

Presumably you cleared it all out. Check again in a fortnight, and then you'll know for certain :y

Update:
Checked the rear passenger plugwell and it is dry / no oil (this is after 3 weeks). Reading other posts this does point to dispack. Can anyone suggest if this is the most likely cause (or is it multiram or something else) and best place to get one . I couldn't quite view the numbers on the dispack as it was too small to make out - i.e. to see if it is the square or oval one.
Thanks

What year is your car?

Also check plug end of crank sensor - if is oval, diss pack should be oval plug too ;)

It gets dark before i get a chance to check things but i did check the tps (on right hand side of plenum) and read somewhere you could identify the correct dispack from this - is this true? see photo below

The part number is 0 280 122 014

Pull the plug off your MAF and take a look  :y

You will find that if you have the oval plug on the MAF, it will be the same on the coil pack  ;)

2.5 / 3ltr engines only iirc.

MAF is an oval plug see photos below:

Production date on plug 01/2000.

I'm guessing this points to a disppack part number 0221503017 but would appreciate if you could confirm?

Where is the best place to buy the dispack from?

Strange but after i replugged the maf plug in i took it for a drive and was stuttering alot more on idle and very slightly on pick up until 1500rpm was reached. I gave it an italian tune up and it idled better after that but still worse than before i had disconnected the maf plug.

There was a terible rain shower at this time and i will need to check the scutlle and prob. put some sealant around it, but wondered if this could mean dodgy maf? (I've ordered dispack so intend to fit this)

From vauxhall world parts - anyone interested they were giving 5% off orders of £65 plus used promo code ADW12 for a further 5% - ended up £73 - bosch 90541062.

Fitted the new dispack yesterday - as stated by others  the access is awkward and i removed wiper motor/linkage for better access. Got her started up again and she seemed to idle a bit better, but will reserve this for when i take her out for a run.

The old dispack had a split down one side and there was some slight corrosion on the unit.

It got dark so didn't get round to putting scuttle back on, but i have managed to loose the foam bit that sits under the wiper spindle - is this a stealer part or could i just put some foam pipe insulation on it?

Big big thanks to all for their advice, though not finished i feel with your assistance i was able to increase my very limited mechanical know how.  :y :y
