Easy check for dispack
« on: 21 August 2012, 17:29:51 »

Is there an easy check for the dispack without removing lots of stuff?

The issue is when i start up for the first time in the day and change from Park to Drive i get a stuttering cough sound (subsequent start ups are fine).

Have put it on ramps and the exhaust seems fine.

I have bought new spark plugs but do not feel confident enough to fit them.

Car is 2.5 Petrol

Thanks

TBH the Spark Plugs are a doddle on the 2.5 and 3.0, check they are not full of oil or water before you take them out, which could cause the problems your having.

For miss fires (electrical) best to start with Plugs first then leads and Coil Pak last and see ho you get on Radar.

;) ;)

Agreed - plugs are easy to change on drivers side, back one passenger side is awkward (need universal joint on socket ideally)
Then leads, then coil pack :y

Changed the plugs on all bar the back one on the passenger side - finding access is tricky :'( Will have another go tomorrow. The harness with all the wires in doesn't move enough out of the way.

All 3 wells on the drivers side had a tiny amount of oil in them but in my no knowledge opinion not enough to cause a stuttering (I seem to remember i did put a little too much oil in on the last oil change). The 2 wells on the passenger side that i got were bone dry.

I couldn't find a suitable tool in the halfords 150 pro. set to remove plugs so ended up buying a halfords spark plug removal tool - everytime you tighten the plugs the darn rubber washer stays on the plug and is a mission to get out!

Any fault codes?

Halfords 150pc (both new and old type) set has the correct socket for removing plugs.

Check drivers side again in a week or so - any oil returning is not a good sign.

Didn't check for fault codes - thanks for the tip :y

I must be a retard because i tried a few sockets but they just didn't fit as they were too wide for the well :-\

To get onto the # 6 plug I use a 3/8 plug socket onto a 150mm extension/universal swivel with another 150mm extension and then 3/8 ratchet.

Best to get a magnetic socket as the plug will stay in once undone and then just spilt at universal joint and pull out plug.
Fitting is reverse but only fit the plug by hand turning the extension to ensure you don,t cross the thread.

It is fiddly buit can be done.Cable tray needs pulling away and ideally cable tying out the way to give better access.

There are 2 deep style sockets with rubber inserts, in the bottom part of the case ;)

Thanks guys, will try again in the morning. Funny thing is i thought i tried the deep style socket first (just seen now it has a rubber insert) but it didn't fit down the well. I think i'm going senile...... figures since it is the big 40 for me later this year!!

Iirc this car had a "good" leak from the scuttle join rear of pot 6. Is that still sealed, not leaking...?

Where the plugs not changed with the leads..?

Thats right Chris. I have magic taped up the around the culprit areas and it hasn't leaked again.

The plugs were not changed with the leads.
