The news is not good the engine is totally seized though the mechanic couldn't say why without spending further time or money on it. The vendor sympathises of course but is refusing to do any more than that. The garage reckon they could supply and fit a new engine for £2000! Now I've made enquiries and can get an engine for £350 and he said its 1.5 days labour to fit so god knows where he is getting the engine from HARRODS?!
I'm at a bit of a crossroads here chaps and would appreciate your input.
-
Have you got somewhere you can fit the engine, a drive way or garage?
-
solution is : a good second hand engine + competent OOF mechanics.. no need to think twice :y

ahhh, my place of work haha :D
-
If you can get hold of an engine, and have a couple of mates to help (who have replaced engines) it should be straight forward. Took me about 3 hours to relieve my Omega of its V6, so 1.5 days would be about right from start to finish
-
I have no place to change an engine it's in Sussex. I've had quotes of £350 for a recon engine but awaiting a price on labour only. I'm scared I will get it fixed and then something else goes wrong as I really won't have any money left!
-
where in mids are you ben as a few of us around here who could possibly help out
-
I live in Stafford car is in sussex as im down visiting family
-
Huh ! Between engine and labour thats a £2500.00 job..roughly.
Cut your losses, scrap it and use the money to get a decent "53" V6.
Simply daft to spend that sort of money on it...not least such a change quite often results in other costly items needed doing.
NOT being funny or argumentative but a total waste of time and money in my opinion.
There are loads of really good models available for well below £2500.00

I think you might need to back track a bit
Engine totallt seized does not sound very specific to me. I think you need to press for more detail somehow.
cambelt failure perhaps - that's is repairable
head gasket failure - that too
-
Did you buy the car private or from a dealer?
-
Bought privately vendor doesn't want to know. Even tried telling me some sob story that his next car has broken down too.
Garage tell me engine and crank are totally solid but all belts are ok.

So there's no come back there then :(
If you, the car and engine were in Stafford I could help with the engine transplant but Sussex is a bit far
-
Thank you for the offer of help. I think I'm going to have to sell or scrap the car cash in the tax and try and buy something else. The car is in good condition barring the seized engine. It's currently outside a garage in Littlehampton, West Sussex and understandably they don't want it there forever.
Admin Edit: Sorry to be a party pooper in your times of need, but we have strict rules on selling cars here
-
Sorry if I've trod on any toes!
-
Are you a member of a breakdown/recovery service who could recover the car home for you ?
-
Assume you are not a member of 1 of the recovery services..AA...RAC...or similar,as they would offer a recovery services back to your home.
Think even if a member of your family has cover and is a passenger ( used in the loosest possible sense ;) ) then worth seeing if you could get the car back home that way..plenty of options of help around your part of the country then :y
-
Yep.
Daft lo knee Darth loo-knee is in Staffordshire. :y

stoke....big place staffordshire when your car is knackered
-
If he gets it from where it is to Staffs,it should be reasonably easy to get it to Stoke.Daz may even be able to collect it or get it collected. ;)
-
I can prob get an engine fitted in west sussex this weekend for about £200, if you can get one.
IF the car is a manual then it can be put on our A frame and towed to Dartford for the work to be done, but of course it would need collecting from there.
There are a few breakers near me but of course buying an engine from a breaker is a largely unknown quantity so a cambelt kit is a definite need. Not too sure on prices off the top of my head but allow another £200 for a kit from a local factors.
That all totals £350 (assuming we get the same price on an engine) without allowing for an oil change or fresh antifreeze.
-
If its an auto, disconnect the prop from the diff. :y
-
Fair point - 20 mins work!
-
Pm Robseymv6 he's in Sussex area, he can tow I'm told, swap engines etc. ....if available. Maybe? :-\
-
Join the AA, get it towed to Daz or one of the mechanics on here.
Exchange a few quid and get a perfectly running car back :y
-
A quick update I've sourced a low mileage engine and the local garage have agreed to fit it and do a cambelt change and keep the costs down for me as it seems they are fans of the car and couldn't bear the idea of it being binned off!
-
Well done Ben :y
I hope you get your car back on the road soon mate ;)
-
Result hope the rest goes well :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
It's good to hear you've finally got some positive news Ben, I hope everything goes well for you from now on :y
-
good luck with it, hope its sorted soon for you. :y
-
No money for the garage if it's scrapped, carefull.

That's excellent News :y Have they given you any idea on price ???

We're looking at £500 for labour and £150 for the cambelt kit if needed. The engine was £450 from a place near Doncaster. The garage reckon its worth saving as its in good nick and the new engine has only done 34k.
-
Thats a very expensive engine and a very expensive cambelt kit. ;)
-
Gates cambelt kit for 2.2 Omega. £79. :y
Water pump must be replaced with cambelt on the 2.2 also, unless theres proof it has been replaced recently.

you are being bumped

I agree. Imo the bes course of action would be to try to buy something cheap with a couple of months tax & test as a stop gap,and then take a bit more time to find the best way to get the Omega fixed properly for a reasonable amount.
Its going to end up costing a grand, which is possibly more than the car is worth. :y
The stop gap car could then be sold on,or even weighed in an at least some of the money it cost recouped. ;)
-
Erm I'm not sure where you buy your engines from but I scoured the country for this one it's not the cheapest but it's very low miles. I've had prices from £340 to £1200 for an engine complete with ancillaries. The price for the new
Cambelt is supply and fit, you must remember I am not a mechanic and do not have anywhere to keep the car. It may not need it doing they are going to check it over when it arrives. It has been a complete nightmare and leaving it stored up was not an option, when I've stored cars before I've found it to be more detrimental to the car as other faults appear. This is the cleanest solution and means I'll have a good car with a good engine when it's completed.
-
pull up your pants and get another price . :o :o :o 500 tops to change the v6 :

That's pretty much what I paid in total to have an engine fitted in my 2.2 last year. I can't remember the individual prices, but very similar to you as the total was just under £1100. The engine had 30k miles and came with a full 12-month guarantee as long as it was professionally fitted and had the belts changed.
-
As an example,Twiglet sold a 2.2 engine last year which had done less than 40,000 miles.I dont know how much he sold it for but Im sure it would have been less than this chap is paying. Which is why I thought it would be better to buy some time and search for a good engine at a sensible price.
As for £500 for fitting it. I might buy my self an engine hoist, seems like it would pay for itself pretty quickly. A V6 engine would be a bit of a faff to swap, but a four pot shouldnt be more than a days work imo.
The fact that they are quoting £150 for a cambelt kit which costs no more than half that rings alarm bells to me. ;)
-
Thers a 2.2 engine on ebay for £189. Its done 78,000 though, but thats hardly high mileage.

Sometimes we all have to decide on a resolution and in this case you've done that. There is sometimes a limit to the time and effort for resolution, cars or otherwise! I really hope the outcome is a good one and that you enjoy your Omega after repair.
