First of all, I'm not looking to change cars just yet. Still very content with my 3.2 Elite.
I'm just struggling to think of anything to replace the Omega when it becomes necessary.
What have previous owners upgraded to, or what are you potentially looking at?
Doesn't have to offer the same comforts of an Omega, although would be nice!
-
I have two upgrades in mind but money says no :-\ Range rover sport or a jag with supercharger.
I like to dream
-
I have 3 in mind.
I quite like the audi A6. I Fancy a jag xj, the xjr preferrably . Or a 5 series BMW, the 95/6/7 shape because they change so often I can't keep up.
-
Its a big problem, not many years left in Omegas, mine are 156k & 141k :(
I've had pleasure of driving a 4.2 V8 Jag XJ recently, not the super new shape but 2006 year. Its one of the few cars I've instantly gone "ohhh yes"
Driving position, bonnet view, arm rest (big thing, I love with Omega is centre arm rest) - Seats, controls, look of the car everything.
Even checked into service parts, oil and filters, drop links, all very similar to Omega prices. Shocks do appear quite a bit more though, as are tyres.
But its by far leading choice, as I want to continue DIY work.
-
Have to admit I've been looking at the S-Type R too.
My sensible head says ST220. Then ultra boring brain says get a diesel with lots of toys.
-
Most of you would not call it an upgrade, in fact some may say a down grade. But after giving mum my Omega Ibought a 2009 Astra1.8 auto. It is no where near as comfortable or have as many toys as the other cars mentioned above.
But and there is a big but here, Do I need a big car ? the answer is no, do I need all the toys, again the answer is no. The Astra serves it purpose very well indeed, my kids barely need us anymore for transport so I went smaller. I only do 4k a year,I can live with a litlle less for such a low mileage.
Oh and it is an utter joy not to have to have the bonnet open most weekends ::)
-
An Astra cabrio as a summer car would be fine for my wifey (or me ? ) no matter what engine although by my opinion there isn't car below 1800 cm3...
-
All you midgets are very fortunate. At 6'4" any replacement car has to have plenty of legroom. The XJ6 I owned years ago was fine, so I guess a big Jag Saloon would do, only trouble is, I like an Estate also, so I don't know what would fit the bill :-\, as I hope not to need replacements any time soon, and have not really looked at any likely candidates. Mine are currently a 110k 2.5td estate and a 52k 3.2 saloon. :y
-
MGZT V8 ...worth considering imo :)
Look its even got elite badges ;)
-
Well when the time comes to replace my DTi the BMW E60 LCI 530D M Sport tops my list. :y
-
Walking frame.
-
depends what your budget is.
the only basic need from my next car is it does as many miles to the gallon as possible. sick of filling my omega up
-
Walking frame.
I need one of those now.I dropped an A frame on my toe today (on the spazzy leg/foot) and its gone completely black and "causing a fair degree of discomfort". It has not been a good week for my decrepit old carcass. ::) ;D
Next car - possibly an old Merc 190D.I have a plan. :)
-
A replacement for the estate is even more limited.
Volvo V70, loading pace much smaller and front wheel drive. Plus the Volvo 960 I had was even more unreliable that the Omega, so I don't want another. :-[
So that only leaves the E series Merc. They have just topped the latest JD power reliability tables and the diesels are fast and reasonably economical. :y
and
The new Jag XF Sportbrake, the 275bhp tractor would do nicely, :y I stopped dreaming once I got to the price list. :o :o :o
-
bicycle.. fed up repairing cars.. or much better a metro ticket.. at least safe..
-
...or much better a metro ticket ...
Our Metro doesn't start running/operating until 6 o'clock in the morning ........ no good if that's when you start work. ::) ::)

I am also 6' 4" The Astra has bags of legroom and headroom in the front. Also my son (17) can still sit behind me when driving without me having to move the seat. When wife drives her Astra there is more leg room in the back than in the front ;D (4' 11")
-
I replaced my daily drive with a Jaguar x-type. great car. not quite as big inside, but has a decent boot, 4wd and 3.0 engine
-
I like the performance of the vxr8 but to get the Nav option it needs to be 07 on I gather, which wont be cheap.
Also like toys and comfort of the Phaeton. Cracking interior.
New shape Pasat is strikingly good looking too.
But there's nothing that ticks as many box's as the omega does, for me.
Nothing looming on the Horizon anytime soon though. :(
-
Phaeton would be a true successor, although spare part prices scare me. Plus VW dealers are generally incompetent, more so than the VX ones.
VXR8 is very nice, but none were made with xenon headlamps and I really struggle with going back to a car without xenons. I also suspect as a daily driver the economy might be an issue as well as the £460 road tax.
Jags excluding the XF's/recent models are too geriatric for my liking.
-
Walking frame.
+1 :y assuming it doesn't kill me first ;D
-
A note about the diesel V6 and V8 VW/Audi engines...
VW do marinised versions of these and access is horrendous. Also worth noting that the timing gear, although a chain set up, needs the engine to come out :o, so much for progress, at least the old ones you only had to strip the front of the car off ::)
-
For me it could be this .........

That's about as nice as you can make a Vectra, just needs VXR leather pack and electric rear windows :y
Oh and a manual box ::)

...and a better centre console area. Looks really naf. :(
Nice looking example though, although I'm a sucker for black cars. :)

New shape Pasat is strikingly good looking too.
The one they pulled out of the back of my Rover was better looking than it was seconds before....

Well, I think your out of order, having the audacity to stop, of all things, in front of such a good looking car. :D

Well, there is something wrong if a modern car cannot stop as quick as a Rover ;D
I notice, where I work, VW drivers aspire to being Audi drivers. And drive as such.
-
A good progression would be a new shaped Kia. They're similar to Vx in that they dont have a single bad looking car and are much better than what they used to be imo
-
I have no opinion yet, but the new Kia saloon, whilst looking like a cheap Chinese 7Series clone, has potential :y
RWD and V8 petrol/V6 diseaseal :y Lhd only to begin with though, and no price yet :-\
-
Aye? A Korean v8? What ever next?
-
Don't know much about it, but credit where credit is due, at least it's rear wheel drive :y

Probably nowt to do with the brakes, human interface fault I suspect ???

Not that VW brakes are generally any use. I know several people who have vowed never to drive one again, after having one too many "trouser browners".

I drove my youngest boys' mates Polo the other day, the brakes were absolutely terrible!

As a "Sunday" show type of car[with the Autobahnstormers]with occasional daily use a replacement for my mig would be another Senator or earlier Vauxhall/Opel[with a 6 cylinder motor]The problem I'm having is what to replace my 1995 Jag XJ6 with,as the dragonlady is disabled and starting to struggle getting in/out of it with it riding so low.
-

They have that 7 year warranty! So if you buy a 4 year old Kia, and provided it's been looked after and has service history etc, you still have 3 years manufacturers warranty!! 8) and as said they are much better than they were! ;)
-
The Hyundai X40 estate looks a nice car with plenty of room. I do like the Audi A6 estate, 2.7 V6 diesel and a standard 6 speed manual box. None of that mega expensive silly DSG rubbish

Having just thundered up and down the M40 (again) today, I've come to the conclusion that whatever replaces the Omega needs to meet the following criteria:
Load space as near to as big as the Omega estate as possible
Comfortable cruiser at .. erm, the legal limit
Return 40-50mpg while doing it
Be cheap to service
.. I may be on a hiding to nothing, there, I think! :(

that's a bit like the ideal tyre.
Loads of grip, never wears out, drives straight as a die with no tram lining at all, zero road noise and cost nine fifths of sweet f.a. to buy.
Not too much to ask, is it? ;D
-
Yep.. mind, unless the good lady moves down here soon I might be forced to settle for "anything that does 50mpg" .. petrol is expensive when you get low 20s.. ;D

I got a price for a front end kit from Teilo recently; and then spent all my money on petrol :-[ :-X (well, expensive month really - petrol, hotels, Goodwood etc).. hopefully in a month or two I'll have enough for a front & back end kit for at least one car.
If I could make the Omega return more than 22mpg it'd help, too! :-[
-
I came from an accord type r to my 2.6 mv6 but next i want a lexus gs300 and super charge the beast

A grand, along with a couple of busy weekends would see your car gassed and fitted with a proper gearbox ::)

You managed to get hold of him? :o
I've heard he has limited Stag kits left along with injectors & vaporiser that we know work (with no lag) - What was the cost of the kit? (PM me it if you want)
Using the 2.2 again recently & getting 27mpg on gas, compared to 27mpg on petrol in the 3.2 is quite a saving on the wallet. :D

Yeah - proper gearbox would help a lot around town.. I wonder how much it'd help on a run, too?
If only I hadn't spent all my grands :'( :-[
-
Yeah - proper gearbox would help a lot around town.. I wonder how much it'd help on a run, too?
Not a lot, in my opinion. Once the auto box has locked up in top gear, I reckon it's no more lossy than a manual box, and its higher gearing probably gives better fuel consumption on a motorway run anyway.
-

A fair point - OD plus the long diff make 'top' very long on the 3.2; it certainly revs it's nads off a lot less than the M3 at speed (not that I'd know, occifer :-[ )
In the process of PMing tunnie about gas as above it struck me - given the cost of a front end kit from Teilo (not that I know precisely what that includes) plus a tank from somewhere, odds & sods and getting it certified.. I reckon I could pick up an entire 2.2DTi for less than the cost of LPG and be getting 30-40mpg off the bat. And if I'm lucky like a friend of mine, be running it on all sorts of crap (I know, I know, fragile diesel pump etc - but he's up to ~100k on the clock now having done two thirds of it's life on WVO, SVO, all the old sump oil from our collective cars, etc.. then again he does have the luck of the Irish!)

I recall a pleasurable evening at a curry house with the OP, I'm sure after that, he had plenty....

;D I'm still waiting for an invite to the famed and oft-talked-about Tiffins.. I seem to pass on a weekly basis now ;) granted usually a bit early or a bit late to be going for a curry! I don't think they're open at midnight ;D

I agree with first bit, not sure if I do with 2nd bit. If were only talking a couple/3 of hundred rpm at 80, I reckon its going to be negligible.
I did 167 miles in that Insignia in 5th, not 6th, at about 140kph, and it made no difference to MPG.

I reckon you'd just get in, if you didn't fanny around deciding on what to order. I've often rolled in at 11:30pm, no issues.
We'll have to sort an evening with a few local OOFers :y, even if its a "night before" one of your trips up :y
