Title: Budget tyre recommendations
Post by: geoffr70 on 10 October 2012, 23:53:30
Hello all, can anyone recommend decent budget tyres for the front of my elite please? I only do 6k a year in it, rather sedately at that! Ideally I'd want a quiet one although beggars can't be choosers!

Are Accelera Alphas any good, or nankang

Thanks peeps

If I had to go budget, probably go with Alphas, going by comments here.

You've driven on Alpha's ;)

They are a pretty good tyre and quite capable... Certainly as capable as the wallowy Elite Suspension :y

Mind you, a lot of places class them as a mid-range tyre now ::)

Iirc mine are branded Jinyu. Best avoided, unless you get them free like I did.Its rude not to then. ;D
Tbh,they werent too bad at first, but now they are wearing down a bit they have a mind of their own, although I suspect the wishbone bushes are shagged too which wont help. It makes life interesting though. The need to concentrate helps prevent me falling asleep on the way home from nightshifts. ;D

If you are anxious to meet your maker promptly, may I recommend Autogrip? They will kill you the first time you pass a lampost that a dog has pissed up.

Me too.  The previous owner had put them on my Omega and I have put up with them for 18 months - lethal in the wet, severe tramlining and very noisy.  I just changed them a couple of weeks ago (for Avons) and the car is transformed!

Just found this old topic- glad I read it.
My 2.2 is fitted with these Autogrips and even when slightly wet and driving slowly round a corner the backside acts like its on ice!! I love RWD cars but frankly, the Miggy is a death trap with these on!!

If your looking for cheap budget tyres or even just getting tyres cheap then take a look at www.camskill.co.uk, I've used them a couple of times now and they have always been the best on price.

Some tyres are so bad they shouldn't be allowed. Auto grip and linglong/slingalongs are death traps.

No problems with my Uniroyal Rainsport 3's  :y

They were not however budget more "Upper Medium" as similar price per corner than Bridgestones / Pirelli's !!!!!!!!!!!!

Had them on my E34 525. Brilliant tyre, could do multiple laps of wet roundabouts looking out the side window. Allegedly.

Autogrip tyres start out OK, but after a bit of wear become unbelievably lethal in damp conditions.

I too thought it would be a laugh to shove one on the back.  Its not, its simply bloody dangerous.

Honestly, you'd have to try an Autogrip in damp conditions to believe how bad they are. Its not possible to go around a corner/roundabout above walking pace without swapping ends. I admit I'm not the worlds best driver, but I don't think anyone could catch it.

It wouldn't work in a FWD, or I'd give it a go....honest. ::)

You wanna bet?
Put something reasonable on the front, and Autogrip on the rear and even on a fwd motor, the rear will want to overtake the front in the damp.  :-[
I know as the rear tyres on my current ride were Autogrip when I first picked it up!
They only lasted about a fortnight before they were replaced!  :o
Absolutely leathal in the damp!

Don't tyres have to pass a test or something? Or can you just put any old thing on provided it has at least 1.6mm of tread?
Title: Re: Budget tyre recommendations
Post by: 05omegav6 on 04 June 2015, 06:47:58
I would highlight part of your post, but I can't :D

Fundamental certification test of a tyre requires said tyre to be black, more or less round, and mire or less the correct size...

UK law dictates that cars have at least1.6 mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tread, and that commercial vehicles have at least 1.0mm of tread across any three quarters of the tyre circumference :y

Bare in mind that 1.6mm of tread is the legal minimum tread depth across the centre three quarters, in other words get them changed :y
