Title: It's the law
Post by: Auto Addict on 24 November 2012, 08:06:29
Behind an old dear in the queue at Tescos.

'How much is the medium sized pack of Golden Virginia please?'

'Not allowed to tell you, it's against the law, I can let you see the price list.'

He hands her an inch thick folder.

'Where abouts in the folder is it?'

'Not allowed to show you, it's against the law'

Unbelieveable!

FFS, if we choose to smoke then it's our decision >:( >:( >:(

Mind you, I think that's an incorrect interpretation of the law which is just that tobacco can't be displayed ::)

Was it a middle aged women in her first real job by any chance? (A big like doctors surgery receptionists :-X)

No, it was a 'bloke', one of the pink type, worked there for years.

I love your "Politically Correct" description ;D ;D ;D

So, Daz is now working in your local Tesco? :-X ::)

But, in seriousness, I've had run ins in the past. Trying to buy Paracetamol and Ibuprofen and getting refused... I even pointed out that Ibuprofen is a NSAID and contains no Paracetamol ::)

Then they refused to sell the other pack to my Father in Law who was behind me in the queue ::) I wouldn't mind but it's not like I was actually buying enough to top myself anyway! ::)

Mind you... I had the last laugh because there was about £150 worth of shopping rung through and packed in bags which I told them to put back and I'd take my business elsewhere ;D

Funny how it's only ever a problem in Tesco. Perhaps using a retailer who doesn't presume to control how you live your life would be an option? ::)

Well I was for 30+ years a senior field manager in the confectionery, tobacconist and newsagency trade for a major national multiple.

Although certain laws have changed, like on the display of tobacco products, it is a nonsense that someone in the trade can claim they are not allowed to tell someone over 18 years old the price of any item.

This strikes me as a typical Tesco "thing" to do with staff training and a severe distortion of the actual laws.  We have seen this with the sale of alcohol, DVD's and tobacco, with now it being about telling a customer the price of a product.

It is barmy and wrong!!!

Just stay away from Tesco!! ;)

Sadly, its our only choice around here (we have a small Waitrose, but the carpark is impossible to get to)...  ...until Saino's open their new store in about 3yrs :D.  I hope Saino's do fuel, that would help with prices around here. Don't think any Saino's do LPG though, although I suspect by the time its built, I won't need LPG

In fairness, this is probably just some idiot's intepretation of some rules that have come through some layers of management.

We should really be proud of Tesco. A British firm, that is successful here, and relatively successful abroad. But like any British firm thats successful - just reading todays posts, includes Tesco, Sky and BT - we feel the need to slate them.

The trouble with Tesco TB is that this problem is not an isolated one and some of their operating practices are just not right and proper.

Though probably more "right and proper" than those that stay below the radar....

Every company with shareholders is forced to make as much money as possible, in order to make our pensions...

Its probably not right and proper either that tesco's amongst other supermarkets sell their fuel as a loss leader just to entice customers to the stores, meaning that other garages struggle or go out of business. But thats business...........

..not surprising that people grow to hate such shining examples of successful British industry as Tesco, Sky and BT, then. Not content with competing with the other players, they are quite happy to operate aggressively, at a loss if necessary, until they are the only player, and own the market. Then the customer can either put up with the service or.. what, exactly?

Oh, yes. Complain on internet forums. ;)

Mind you I was doing the shopping in Sainsburys with Mrs. KW eating chocolate cake and drinking coffee while Mrs. KW did the shopping earlier and she got pulled up for having 2 packets of Paracetamol and one of Ibuprofen. ::)

No UK law, to stop people topping themselves with paracetamol. What they should have done is made the drug companies add an antidote to the paracetamol to stop any liver damage, which has no effect on it as a pain killer. Unfortunately, the powerful drug company lobby won, so they made it that you either had to visit a few stores to top yourself or have a Cash and Carry trade card, where you can as a trader buy bulk packs.  :o :o :o :o

'cause if you're desperate enough to top yourself, the prospect of going to Tesco a dozen times to get enough pills will really make you think twice, sit back with a cup of tea and think of all the good things in life, not push you further over the edge. ::)

Exactly what I was describing ::)

As for telling them to put the shopping back, it's happened several times. Local Tesco wanted us to self scan 2 heaped trollies of (Christmas) shopping a couple of years back... Told them to either put it in staff mode or open a checkout because I wasn't playing with the stupid scales for what turned out to be nearly £400 of shopping! ::) After a short discussion and me suggesting they had better put everything back they managed to open a manned checkout :y

Should make it clear, there were no manned checkouts open before I stamped my feet :o

None at all on a busy day...... :o :o :o  I do not mind the self scan for a few, say less than 10, items but a full trolley load or more no way..............I too would have walked away........... :y :y

I remember the first time Tesco at Camberley opened all night on Christmas eve. Must have been late 80's / early 90's. Police had to be called to evacuate the place. Got caught up in the melee while staggering off to the kebab van by Blackwater station after drinking beer in plastic glasses at the Agincourt, most likely. ::) <shudder>

Apparently, everyone piled their trolleys high then realised there were only a couple of checkouts open (most people have better things to do at 2AM on Christmas eve, after all, you'd have thought, not least stagger off to bed after a skinful?). The place was rammed full and people were just abandoning trolleys and going home when they saw the queues. Shelves rapidly emptied into trolleys, so people started to help themselves to stuff from abandoned trolleys. OK until they try to swipe something from a trolley that's not abandoned, whereby fisticuffs ensued. ;D

Looking back, the ridiculous display of "me first!" attitudes was a real taste of things to come.

It's one of the 3 major food groups.

Beer, cake and chocolate.

In a pinch, you can combine the last two.

Self scanning items in the shop i dont mind but they always seem to flag up a fault mainly due to the weight miscalculation plate  ::) Funny how these were introduced to save on staff but every self scanning check out has a couple of permanent staff re-setting the machines  ;D

A couple of years ago I popped into ASDA for a sunday newspaper.  Picked a copy of The Sunday Times and when I scanned it at the self serve checkout it went "Approval needed!!"  :o

The girl came over and we had a bit of a laugh about needing to be over 18 to buy The Sunday Times, but I've always wondered if something more sinister was going on......  :-\
