It's the law
« on: 24 November 2012, 08:06:29 »

Behind an old dear in the queue at Tescos.

'How much is the medium sized pack of Golden Virginia please?'

'Not allowed to tell you, it's against the law, I can let you see the price list.'

He hands her an inch thick folder.

'Where abouts in the folder is it?'

'Not allowed to show you, it's against the law'

Unbelieveable!

FFS, if we choose to smoke then it's our decision >:( >:( >:(

Mind you, I think that's an incorrect interpretation of the law which is just that tobacco can't be displayed ::)

Was it a middle aged women in her first real job by any chance? (A big like doctors surgery receptionists :-X)

No, it was a 'bloke', one of the pink type, worked there for years.

I love your "Politically Correct" description ;D ;D ;D

So, Daz is now working in your local Tesco? :-X ::)

But, in seriousness, I've had run ins in the past. Trying to buy Paracetamol and Ibuprofen and getting refused... I even pointed out that Ibuprofen is a NSAID and contains no Paracetamol ::)

Then they refused to sell the other pack to my Father in Law who was behind me in the queue ::) I wouldn't mind but it's not like I was actually buying enough to top myself anyway! ::)

Mind you... I had the last laugh because there was about £150 worth of shopping rung through and packed in bags which I told them to put back and I'd take my business elsewhere ;D

Funny how it's only ever a problem in Tesco. Perhaps using a retailer who doesn't presume to control how you live your life would be an option? ::)

Well I was for 30+ years a senior field manager in the confectionery, tobacconist and newsagency trade for a major national multiple.

Although certain laws have changed, like on the display of tobacco products, it is a nonsense that someone in the trade can claim they are not allowed to tell someone over 18 years old the price of any item.

This strikes me as a typical Tesco "thing" to do with staff training and a severe distortion of the actual laws.  We have seen this with the sale of alcohol, DVD's and tobacco, with now it being about telling a customer the price of a product.

It is barmy and wrong!!!

Just stay away from Tesco!! ;)

Sadly, its our only choice around here (we have a small Waitrose, but the carpark is impossible to get to)...  ...until Saino's open their new store in about 3yrs :D.  I hope Saino's do fuel, that would help with prices around here. Don't think any Saino's do LPG though, although I suspect by the time its built, I won't need LPG

In fairness, this is probably just some idiot's intepretation of some rules that have come through some layers of management.

We should really be proud of Tesco. A British firm, that is successful here, and relatively successful abroad. But like any British firm thats successful - just reading todays posts, includes Tesco, Sky and BT - we feel the need to slate them.

The trouble with Tesco TB is that this problem is not an isolated one and some of their operating practices are just not right and proper.

Though probably more "right and proper" than those that stay below the radar....

Every company with shareholders is forced to make as much money as possible, in order to make our pensions...

Its probably not right and proper either that tesco's amongst other supermarkets sell their fuel as a loss leader just to entice customers to the stores, meaning that other garages struggle or go out of business. But thats business...........
