This is not a request for help, just a sob story :'(
The story so far . .
2011 dumped my 52 V6 CDX Estate at 180k. Just getting old and tatty
Bought, 02 V6 CDX Estate with 60k.
Few weeks ago, headgasket went, coolling system full of oil. Due to a few dents etc decided to scrap it rather than pay a grand or so to get it fixed.
Bought, 2000 2.5 Elite Estate with 84k in decent nick
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=109081.msg1365372#msg1365372
Then after a few weeks . . . sudden small water leak . . . turned out to be . . . bleedin head gasket again !
This time I'm coughing up. I don't do my own work. It's gonna cost the same as I paid for the car, but I don't see cars as investments, I see them as utilitarian tools. I do about 20k a year, not vast mileage but a fair amount.
Car in garage right now where they are waiting for delivery of errrrr "Stretch Bolts"? or something for the cylinder head. My Mrs old 940 Volvo is getting a few miles put on it by me ::)
Question: Why don't they make new Omega Estates ? ??? There really isn't anything around today that is as huge inside. >:(

Well, the guy at the garage did say that it could be that, but also that it may not be that. I'm not mechanical so I don't know, but I do tend to trust him. The AA guy who got the car home also suggested that it could be terminal. Anyway all done now, it's in the great scrapyard in the sky.

Indeed they are, however rear load carrying capacity of most modern estates have been compromised by design features like sloping rear hatch doors and bodywork that gets narrower near the roof, and quite a few other things. All a case of style over substance.
There was an older E Class that was huge, I mean vast, but that was some time ago they are all quite old now.

Its been stated so many times on this forum by various luminaries such as MarkDTM,Darth loo-knee and many others. There has never been a known case of head gasket failure on a 2.6 or 3.2 V6. ;)
I had a 2.6 project earlier this year which had been diagnosed by a garage with head gasket failure. It was restored to good health without a head being removed (oil cooler replaced) and now lives happily with its new owner. :)
H/G failure also uncommon on 2.5 engine.I suspect a garage may be making a nice profit out of you Rog. ;)
In future, ask for advice on the forum before getting diagnosis from a garage.Thats its primary purpose after all. :y
-
Only ones that seem to have suffered with a head gasket failure are S plate models for some strange reason. Every other car I can ever remember (since I signed up in 2006 I think it was) has been an Oil Cooler failure.

Only HG on the V6 are coolant leaks to the outside, esp at back of 1998 3.0l 2/4/6 head...
The garage in this case should be shot >:(

Oh well . . . . .
I'll look on the up-side and think that things should now be pretty good after being stripped down and put together again. And it has been, I was there today and saw it all laid bare.
Trouble is I use a car for business, I just don't have time for lengthy considerations. I see problem, fix it.

Agreed. But . . . . look at the slope on the rear hatch door. Put something big in there and the door won't close, or the glass will get broken. And that's my point.
-
I hope they changed the oil cooler as well while it was in bits!!

Yet another case (to add to the 1,000's) that both the AA and a lot of garages don't now what the frack they are talking about.
Oil in the coolant would have been oil cooler failure, such a shame. :(

If they had a clue they'd be working in a nice warm workshop (or a nice warm development lab). ;D

Don't beat yourself up about it Rog, if you didn't know you didn't know... simple! ;) Sounds like you've been very unlucky with your Omegas! :-\
-
I'm fairly sure one of the 2.5 V6 migs I looked at buying this year had a leaking head gasket. A lot of mayo in filler (yes I know that's common) but also a lot of steam (not oil) from the exhaust. I had my mig parked next to it, identical engine, both well warmed up and no steam from mine. I didn't bother a long test drive to be certain, a dodgy dealer, spark plugs and sump bathed in oil but worst of all no cruise control meant goodbye. It was a pre facelift S reg (1999) I think.
-
It happens on 2.5,s but not very often.Never on 2.6/3.2. :y
-
As above, don't beat yourself up, you're not on your own.
I have the invoice for my car from when it had its head gaskets replaced at a couple of years old (the car is 1999) and some poor bugger (probably a company) forked out £1400 ........... :o :o :o

Nah, I'm really not beating myself up.
I look at things this way. Let's say I went out and bought a brand new big estate with a big engine. How much ? Probably at least £20K maybe £30k, £40K even.
As soon as I drive out of the showroom I have lost maybe £5k, and then it carries on loosing. Thats more than any of my Omegas even including an HG repair.
"some poor bugger (probably a company) forked out £1400 .."
That is a very familar amount . . . . . I haven't had the bill yet as work not finished, but I've been warned.
-
And there are some very good mobile mechanics on here who a) KNOW what they are doing, and b) would charge a lot less than your garage. :y

Do I detect just a bit of a plug there ? ;) . . . .

You certainly do, but not for myself, just look at previous threads. I can think of at least 4 who have done jobs for reasonable rates in the past. :y
-
Shackeng - Point taken :)
Now, a question. I may have my car back today (just "may" not for sure).
I need to go to Glasgow, an 800 mile+ round trip tomorrow. Will this be ok, just having had a new head gasket done ? Any Do's or don'ts ?
Oh, if I don't get it back today I'll be taking The Mrs '97 Volvo 940 ;D
-
If the job has been done properly it shouldnt be a problem.Dpends how confident you are in your mechanic. ;)
-
And if the headgasket was the route cause (which it probably wasn't).

Well, all done.
Engine is very much quieter for some reason.
Under bonnet all looking very clean, well cleanER
Car running great but not done a decent run yet. London to Manchester on Monday.
And . . . . there's a serious bill, but pretty much what was quoted (You really DO NOT want to know ! :o ) but it's more than the car cost.
However, if I get 20k - 40k out of it without any more major expense then I'll be happy, although I am gonna need new tyres soon but that would happen regardless.
