That does seem impressive. As I cannot have sound on at work. I wondered if it would prevent tailgating?

Wow! :o :o :o :o

The driver must always wear a seat belt with de-acceleration like that! ;D ;D ;D

The bloke driving the V70 couldn't quite bring himself to actually stop though :-\ must have nearly wet himself...

Would like to see how it copes doing that on a bend though :-\

Indeed, but like ABS, ESP, TCS etc, they can only bend the laws of physics, not rewrite them :y

But would the traffic following be so good?

Only ever as good as the weakest link.

I can remmebr when cars with discbrakes had a sticker on the back to warn cars following that it may stop quicker than they were used to stopping in their drum braked cars. :)

Im old. :'( :D

Who gives a toss about the vehicle behind? If it stops the innocents on the hard shoulder being killed, the dickheads who drive too close to it will be eradicated from the gene pool.

I remember when our tanks had a refit with a new engine, gearbox and steering box/brakes.  Instead of 20mph we could now go 45mph until you hit the brakes which were now superb, it would stop in a few vehicle lengths even at 'high' speed.  We often put the tank on it's front wheels with the back in the air and wondered what would happen should a car be following too close.

and more recently cars had ABS badges on the back for the same reason,
could have meant the trim level on a jap car tho?

My first thought was its impressive a truck can stop that quick, ESP that increased braking in the last quarter.

But then realised its the automatic nature of stopping they are advertising.

So that aside, can trucks all stop that quick normally? Lordy. :o

yep..

rear brakes dont have effect until the cars loaded because of safety reasons..  also they can be converted to discs anytime..

you can see their braking force at mot..

In an ideal world yes... 12 huge disc brakes performing an emergency stop ;)

In reality, many tractor units don't have discs all round and most trailers are still running drums ::)

When I was in the garage our heavy wrecker had awesome power. A 15L, twin turbo Caterpiller engine that did 2 gallons to the mile when cold  :o  It was plated to 80 Tonnes for UK roads so needed it and the good brakes... It would out-perform most normal road cars on acceleration (if you could cope with the 13 forward gears in an Eton Box, which wasn't easy!) and certainly out brake most cars when it was solo :y

This was a G Registered truck so not exactly new ;)

Things have moved on. Discs all round on units and trailers.

Didnt Mr clarkson drive a volvo car a while back which he demonstrated by driving up to a stationary vehicle without touching the brakes.

Agreed... On the newer ones :y But how many companies are still running around with units that are 10+ years old (bearing in mind that a 52 plate vehicle is now more than 10 years old ;)) and even older trailers ???
