I'm having some redecoration in my house and the BT master socket is not in an ideal location. It looks a straightforward to move it, BUT I've always thought it is not permitted. However, reading this thread:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=3043196 (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=3043196)
...has confused me. One poster stated that the rules on a DIY move were relaxed a few years ago and you can move it. There are only two wires (blue, white/blue), so I don't think it would be difficult, but I don't really want to flout the rules. ;)
-
I moved mine recently - just re-punched the connections using a punch tool, it took all of 2 mins
-
Just do it....easy enough job....then deny all knowledge... :-X ;)

You are right Nick, strictly speaking to conform with the Telecommunications Act you may not move the main socket on the line that first enters your property. But you can install extensions providing they are first connected to the main inlet box via a plug.
I have wired up many telephone extensions, but have always obeyed the rules. Yes, obviously, you could do your own thing but then if anything goes wrong with the main telephone line in from BT, and one of their engineers has to visit, they will discover your "breach" and may charge you considerably for all labour / materials to rectify the problem.
This is a useful link if you need it for reference:

No, strictly speaking it is BT protecting their network and trying hard not to have untrained individuals causing faults. There is no connection to H & S, but purely the integrity of their system.
It is also the small matter that it is regulated by law, which dates back to those dark days when you could only get a phone and have it installed by the General Post Office, after being on a waiting list for months!

Ha.ha.ha.Lizzy,,,,at my age rules and regulations go right out of the window...however i know what you are saying is true.....good for a laugh though dont you think.. :D

Ah yes, but I am not silly as it was with a warning of not connecting cable direct to the main socket, but via a plug. So I accept no responsibility whatsoever! :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

Its actually a criminal offence to make modifications to the telecommnications network without authority.
To consumers, that means touching it before the network termination point, which is:
NTE5A/B - the test socket behind lower faceplate
Master Socket - every socket
Planset, exc Plan 4, and hardwired - the phone(s)
Plan 4 - every socket
HES - the phones
Its desperately easy to tell if bob the builder has pissed around.
In reality, you're unlikely to go to court, unless you are doing it for others, but may end up with a £90+VAT + T&M charge to put it right.

The simple fact a shite set up like BT tell me I can't do it absolutely means I have to move it, and while at it make it glaringly obvious to any engineer who visits that I have done so...just so he can look at me and I can give him the look that says...I wanted to ,so I did , so there.
Some times people on here can be so gut wrenchingly uptight about things it makes me want to pull my eyes out with a rusty fork.....but then again that's why OOF works so well, as we are all so different :D
-
When your fiddling with the wires can they tell your up to something :-\
-
women know they always know when your fiddling with something ::) ::) ???
-
You could always move it yourself and if they do charge you just.......(.reverse the charges...)........and send them to Lizzy......ha ha...dont you just love this forum :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D(

Think i was quoted £100 from bt to move the socket about a year ago :-\

off course you would know it would be upside down and at least 1 screw missing and the other cross threaded ;) ;D ;D
like the labouerer on a site I ran in morcambe took out half the shopping centre whilst digging a trench so i asked him why did he hit that big black cable for, he casually replied he wanted to see if it was alive!!!! by chance the pick had a wooden shaft was a bit blackened but saved his life

I did say what the laws of the land are, not what you should do. Though be aware, as I tried to warn, it is blindingly obvious that its been buggered around with, and you can expect a charge when they find out.

Still had to when I worked there... ...which was when it was Titish Brelecom, and then BT from about 1991. As I'm not as old as you :P
