BT master socket relocation
« on: 13 February 2013, 16:06:46 »

I'm having some redecoration in my house and the BT master socket is not in an ideal location. It looks a straightforward to move it, BUT I've always thought it is not permitted. However, reading this thread:

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=3043196

...has confused me. One poster stated that the rules on a DIY move were relaxed a few years ago and you can move it. There are only two wires (blue, white/blue), so I don't think it would be difficult, but I don't really want to flout the rules.  ;)

I moved mine recently - just re-punched the connections using a punch tool, it took all of 2 mins

You are right Nick, strictly speaking to conform with the Telecommunications Act you may not move the main socket on the line that first enters your property.  But you can install extensions providing they are first connected to the main inlet box via a plug.

I have wired up many telephone extensions, but have always obeyed the rules.  Yes, obviously, you could do your own thing but then if anything goes wrong with the main telephone line in from BT, and one of their engineers has to visit, they will discover your "breach" and may charge you considerably for all labour / materials to rectify the problem.

This is a useful link if you need it for reference:

No, strictly speaking it is BT protecting their network and trying hard not to have untrained individuals causing faults. There is no connection to H & S, but purely the integrity of their system.

It is also the small matter that it is regulated by law, which dates back to those dark days when you could only get a phone and have it installed by the General Post Office, after being on a waiting list for months!

Ah yes, but I am not silly as it was with a warning of not connecting cable direct to the main socket, but via a plug.  So I accept no responsibility whatsoever! :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y
