Title: auto conversions....
Post by: 2woody on 05 March 2013, 22:08:33
Well, after nine auto-to-manual conversions, I now find myself doing a manual-to-auto.

is this a "muller-light" moment ?

Agreed .. if god had intended us to drive manuals we'd have 3 legs .....  :)

<start computation>
x = number of pedals
y = number of feet
p = perfection level
If x > y then p=0%
If x = y then p=100%
If x < y attend garage for safety checks
<end computation>

:)

Yoghurt knitting depends on the traffic level. Down here, there's two corners on my commute that warrant a manual. And one of those has bloody traffic lights on it now.

Lets face, the omega manual is more akin to Victorian signal box than anything car related. ;)

Heard of it, but 99% of auto drivers don't do it.

What does left leg do in an auto? Sod all!

Operate the "go slower" pedal  ..  :)

Lot of effort? While driving the 3.2, I just swivel right foot?

Whole point of driving an auto is laziness?

Left foot does nothing but rest on that hump in the carpet and relax  ;)

Think it's well known on here that I always left foot brake when i'm in an auto. Feels un-natural now to use the right foot to brake in an auto.

Must admit, I always used to use the left foot on the stop switch but have found myself driving much more gently lately and have reverted to one foot. Although when in the car on my own it's not unheard of for me to switch back if I'm pressing on ::)

I too default to left foot braking. The only time it has been a slight problem was when I frequently drove a manual & tried left foot braking in that...... the clutch pedal doesn't slow the car very well.  :o  ;D  ;D  ;D

I don't know anyone who drives an auto with just one foot. Two feet and two pedals makes perfect sense. Especially when you shouldn't be using both pedals simultaneously.

The gas and brake pedal are too close together so it isn't the most comfortable driving position  (not that I can brake with my left foot)

Only time I do left foot braking is when I use the brake as a clutch, for times like ramps when you need little more revs.

I find it tricky though as left foot is used to stomping on the clutch, auto just makes me more lazy. Lifting left foot is far to much effort  ;D

Exactly! If you ever want to be able to driver a proper manual car properly again, then it's a silly habit to get into, IMHO. Keep each foot attuned to the job it's supposed to be doing!

I know the Omega's manual setup isn't the best in the world but who on earth would go to the trouble of "upgrading" it to auto? :-\

even if I dont have the left leg, I would tie a pice of stick and still I would drive a manual.. ;D

Having had a driving licence for as long as you've been around, I can manage to drive a manual properly if the occasion arises .... as I suspect other left foot brakers here will be able to do too.  ;)  ;)

That's fine, then. ;) I know I couldn't, and that I'd find myself going for the wrong pedal with the wrong foot or with the wrong level of subtlety. It would probably happen during a moment of panic when doing the right thing was vital. I find simply disabling the left foot and carrying on as normal with the right in an auto works for me, but that's just me, hence the IMHO.

Usually when I hire a Villa in Portugal or Greece you get some little FWD box like a 106, often I go for the clutch pedal and because my feet are so big, i clip the brake some times.

Usually to the annoyance and surprise of MrsT, not to mention myself!  ;D  ;D

Strangely, if I'm on a mission, right foot braking only. I seem to have more control that way. But I'd be a liar if I said my left foot was never used on the stop button.

I agree that you're more planted in the seat if your left foot is up against the foot rest ...... where arguably it should be  ;)
