Title: A hair dressers car
Post by: miked on 03 June 2013, 22:19:38
OK, what makes one?

My last car was a Mini Cooper S ( supercharged version ) but it was blue with a white roof and white wheels.  My work colleagues all decided it was definitely a hair dressers car.

My 2.0 supercharged SLK seems to have avoided similar criticism in the same group.

With a restricted budget ( having just lobbed out a not insignificant amount on the wife's car and bearing in fact I only do 14 miles per day ) is there a small, cheep to buy, potentially convertible, reasonably quick, reliable, comfortable vehicle that is not classed as a 'hair dressers car'?

The mini was quick, handled like a go-cart and sound fantastic when the supercharger was spinning yet is predominantly driven by women it would seem.

The Mercedes is a much more civilised car, still quick and cheep to buy and I much preferred its build and finish to a Z4.

Just interested.  I couldn't give a flying f**k either way, the MB is lovely, smooth, quick.  The Mini was raucous and uncomfortable and I'm getting old lol

They only called you a Hairdresser in your Mini cos it was not a proper Mini, the real Mini was available and driven by all - a peoples car, so no one would have a go, the BMW Mini, is, a BMW............ ;) ;)

OK, that maybe the answer, an original Cooper S.  However, having owned an original Mini, I'm not sure it would meet my comfort requirements.

So what are the other options?

A 3.2 Elite in top spec ???

LOL

I had one of those the other week as a hire car.  It too was apparently a hairdressers car.

I'm totally confuse as to what is not a hair dressers car.

One I am certain is not a hair dressers car is a MB SLK 63 AMG, owned by a collegue of mine.  It's like a fighter jet with wheels.  She, by the way, is not a hair dresser, but is senior legal council for the company I work for.  Travels over 100 miles a day and fills it up every morning  :o

Very dresser, plus a truely horrific engine which drink like George Best on a bender. A collegue had one and hes just swapped it for a V8 cayenne which is doing around the same mpg!

My 2.0 supercharged SLK seems to have avoided similar criticism in the same group.

These always struck me as a car chosen by middle class, he had the E class and her the SLK.......so pretty feminine!

It could be worse. A mate of mine has a convertible "new shape" VW Beetle. :o

He fails to appreciate my point that a car that comes with a factory fitted flower vase attached to the dashboard (ignoring its' other numerous faults) can never be anything but very, very, very gay. ::)

I had to call on a family today, on the drive was a 12 reg BMW something big :-[ with the roof on, he is a builder, was there for about an hour and found it difficult not to call him a hairdresser, dressed a bit like one though, and every time I turned to speak with him the temptation was sooooooo great, but managed to resist..... :D :D :y

Swmbo is a hairdresser and she had a Mini Cooper convertible until 2 years ago. She loved it, and I must admit on the odd occasion I drove it it was quite fun.  :o

She now has my Saab 95 estate since I convinced her that we needed an estate, and after getting it, convincing her that my MV6 had to go and she would  be better with the estate, and i would get something more economical.  :)
She still moans that one minute she's in her wee sporty mini, the next she's got a 3.0L barge  ;D ;D

The Elise should really be top of the list of "topless cars without significant hairdresser appeal" but for some reason they just don't deliver. Such a car should really just slip into place and be a joy to drive but there's always an edginess with them. You seem to be constantly fighting the ergonomics and the nasty gearchange. It makes it known all the damn time that there's a price to pay for being sporty.

It's not that I'm averse to cars that sacrifice a bit of comfort. I drive my Westfield every day the weather allows and I'm as happy pootling along in traffic as I am at 10 tenths, as long as it's not raining. Everything falls into place, the controls are accurate and in the right places, and it's a joy to drive. Same can be said of Mrs. KW's MX 5, TBH. It's a shame they didn't get it right with the Elise. I've seen so many people move from a kit car to an Elise and be disappointed.

Not driven a VX220, so don't know if that has inherited any of these traits. Might be worth a look? I hesitate because, whilst not overly a hairdresser's car, two guys came touring with our kit car group a few years back in a VX220. They must have had the entire Vidal Sassoon range applied to their bonces daily, so that image has kinda stuck with me. ;D

Older Merc SL, perhaps? A mate of mine has a 1995ish SL600 with all the AMG bits on.  :-*

In my experience anything that is mainstream and has a convertible in the range then the convertible variant seems to qualifiy as a hairdressers car, often this tag is attached by someone who drives something more conventional and in my view is masking a bit of jealousy with an attempt at humour.....

I used to have a neighbour that slagged off some element of every car I took home, no matter what it was , merc, bmw, ford, vauxhall, aston martin and he would find fault with all of them, he drove a metro.......

Last weekend my better half's little brother took great pains to tell me that my M3 (convertible) is a hairdresser's car and that the MR2 I had previously was much more manly, that or a first gen Boxster apparently.

I think he may be slightly misguided there.. ;D

Having said that, the MR2 Roadster is a great fun little convertible and a darn sight easier to live with than a plastic bucket from Norfolk..

Then again, after last weekend I find myself thinking about a return to the MR2 or having a lot of liposuction and getting a Cater/field..

Oh, and alarm bells start to ring at this point. Nothing compromises a car more, both in looks and in build, performance, etc. than a bean counter deciding to add a convertible to the range IMHO. Design something without a roof and add a soft top, by all means, but take a car with a tin roof, remove it, bodge a soft top on, start to wonder if you need to make the chassis more rigid, look at the available budget, rub chin... No, thanks. ;)

All suitable for blonde ladies who wear their sunglasses on their heads, hairdressers, and gay men (arse bandits). :)

Thanks, Mr dbug. :y :y :y

The closest I came to a TR6 was a 1976 Triumph 2500S.

It had the 'Stag wheels' and overdrive on second, third and top gear. Sadly it wasn't fuel injected, instead equipped with either twin SU or stromberg carbs.......I can't quite remember which.

The tin worm had given it a beating, but it was still an elegant car.

It had about 100 b.h.p if memory serves.  :y

Yes. I believe that the 2.5 PI salooon was rated at 132bhp.

I think that the later TR6's, post 1973, were detuned slightly for supposedly smoother running. :y

I'd much prefer a car from the 69-72 era. :y :y

Yep post 73 TR6s were non -PI, running on twin Stroms - 125bhp :)

Nothing to do with smoother running (the PIs were smooth but b*ggers to set up properly), but emissions

have a look at a Scimitar GTC, similar car without the rust or engine problems, and a good one can be had for about £3 -4 grand, how much is a tatty stag?
