Hi everybody, temp gauge on 2.2 is on zero and the top pipe heats up gradually. Was working before, thermostat housing looks like this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Omega-Vectra-Astra-Zafira-Thermostat-Housing-Stat-/290928393510?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43bcaefd26
but it doesnt have a long bit on it, mine has a short pipe lol .Will this one on ebay fit a y22xe 2.2 2001, as when i changed stat before it wouldnt sit right as housing was worn away inside on the lugs.So wedged it .Thats what makes me think that its the stat and not the gauge. Many Thanks :-\

Check electrical connector is on temp sensor at back of engine ;)

Sender unit here. To test the gauge, earth/ground the blue wire from the sender unit & the gauge should show fully hot.

yep back of mine does'nt look like the picture. It has 2 wire multi plug, then spade in black sleeve somewhere next to it.I have pulled of spade ran to earth nothing. Now i cant see what it goes back on its so tight behind there. I ve got inspection mirror but at the back all i can see is the multi plug and right next to it a rounded off small plug. Nothing for a single wire spade to go on to. Anyone got pic of 2.2 16v rear Thanks

Spade connector slides over the round disc at the top of the sender

Wicked, so that smaller plug must be it. I take it it slides downwards from the top so as to keep it there.Odd connection lol

Slides in from which ever way you want to ...... it's circular ;)
Pretty sure all my Vauxhalls over the past 20 odd years have been the same ;)

Nice one got it back on, still no change on gauge in car, surely it must be that stat was all working ok the other day and as i said i bought a new stat to put in a while back, on fitting it i realised that it was too small in the lug length to sit in the housing so i put part of old one on top of lugs to hold it in.Maybe its stuck its the only thing ive touched, so will this housing fit a 2.2 z22xe.

Yes that's the correct one but this one is cheaper and no better/worse! :y

Will swap housing and stat then take it from there i think :y Thanks

I have pulled of spade ran to earth nothing. .....
Assuming your ignition was on when you earthed the blue wire, if you didn't get any movement on the gauge you have a fault somewhere ie the gauge itself, or wiring up to it. :-\

most likely cause is the spade on end of wire-changed about 4 so far this year alone ;)

maybe ..... something's amiss.
What does anyone do to a spade connector to make it need to be changed? ??? The one on my car is OE & is 13 yr old ;D

Had a couple of gauges stop working on my 95 mig. had to replace dash. :'(

Good point, will retest spade connector.I take it that if i run a wire from the earths below the battery to the spade connector, then turn engine on and wait to see gauge rise to max. What about if i remove stat completely.Where would the gauge read at if the system had no stat. ???
-
no mate unplug spade and touch to engine-with ignition on-temp should fly to red :y-sometimes-the spade is corroded and has to be cut off-then fit new one :y
-
Little sign on temp gauge turned red but needle on gauge never moved.I take it this means the gauge has gone.

Sounds like it :( :( Is the gauge available on its own? No idea, I'm sure others will advise :y

I had the same problem on my Catera V6. While re-sealing the cam covers, I changed the connector, the sending unit and also the thermostat, since everything was already in pieces. Didn't help, so it has to be the dash gauge. I've got it about 6th on my current list of maintenance fixes. I always check my coolant while seeing to the oil (I actually never start it in the morning without checking the oil - I'm retired :) and am not looking forward to dash removal. I have found I always neglect to hook something up, no matter how fastidious I am. Is the 2.2 easier to access the head unit on the dash?
