Crazed little stroker from the seventies and eighties. Very little front tyre wear. ;D ;D ;)

I well remember riding a z650 when they had just come out.I held it flat in top for a very long time and could not coax it past an indicated 115mph,which was probably a genuine 105 at best.
They have built up quite a cult following over the years though, and good ones now sell for silly money.
I still hanker after 500 or 750 two stroke Kwacker from the 70,s (must be a sadomasochist) but they command ridiculous prices these days.

I have the dubious honour of being one of those who crashed a 500 mach3 and survived with cuts & bruises. It was a KH250 attacking the back of a Hillman Hunter and a set of traffic lights simultaneously that almost killed me. ;D ;D

That ZRX1200S was a great bike Tunnie , try one out and you will soon see why  :y I had the unfaired version first but you needed Arnie shoulder muscles to hang on , with the faired version gives much more comfort and higher speed levels in comfort  :y

How about this beauty, chaps?

My 1984 "B" registration Kawasaki GPZ 750 Turbo. It was a demonic little bastard. :y :y

Originally red and black, it was painted blue before I managed to get my paws on it. :-* :-* :-*

The best factory turbo by far........it went like shit off a shovel.

Last bike I had-purchased as a restoration project to tinker with-got it circa 1970 for £8 was a 1954 Ariel 600 sidevalve single.Magneto ignition made night riding on poorly/unlit country lanes "interesting" to say the least!Rebore cost me £1 and then £15 to have a piston made to fit it!!Kicking it up was a mare,I've never weighed more than 10st 2lb in my life,so not much leeway for error in timing letting go the valve lifter!Never seen another one before or since, must say something for my taste in bikes!

think in hindsight the crusaders were reasonably oil tight, front tyre looks rather chunky from memory, and does the rear tyre remind me of an avon sm. many years have passed since the days of the enfields and other british bikes. and if I really go down memory lane one of my neighbours had the Triumph Bonneville as a test machine while riding for the factory !
Title: Re: Old Bike
Post by: Andy H on 16 June 2013, 12:47:06
Tyres were as purchased Avon SMs. Hard as bakelite and terrifying in the wet :o The front tyre had straight grooves running round the tyre (nothing across) the rear had a square profile that would have been perfect for a sidecar combination.

I soon switched to Dunlop TT100s. Much grippier and a better shape and tread pattern but smaller diameter (which wasn't good for gearing or ground clearance).

A legend amongst tyres way back then. :y :y

By the standards of today they'd probably provide as much grip as an excited dog on lino. :)

personally I preferred the Dunlop k70 for the rear but cannot remember the front tyre make/model, but that was on the ariel arrow and later the leader without the fairing and engine cowling but with trials bars instead of standard !

Must stress that this isn't a pic of mine as all my old photos in albums somewhere but it very similar apart from mine having cutdown panels

We had some cracking times back then and made friends for life
