hi guys for a few weeks now my omega 2.0 on a 99 keeps all of a sudden all lights on dash come on power steering goes, have to stick in neutral start car back up and put in drive again as auto and away we go again , feel this is dangerous as wifey is now terrified to drive it .
have changed m.a.f. and checked all air pipes cleaned all thro and card cleaned where poss been reading ur forum and need to know if crank sensor is the only one to suddenly cut out everything or could it be something ive missed ......REE.??

More likely a cam sensor on a 4 pot ;)
Any codes?
-
I once had a similar mysterious fault on a manual Senator - lights on, radio fails, power steering off, etc. Turned out to be alternator bearings stiffening up when hot. To test, remove auxiliary belt and try turning the alternator pulley by hand.
-
I don't think cam (or crank) sensors cause stalling on a 2.0. I would suggest looking/cleaning ICV first.
-
not sure if this is relevant but have you cleaned the battery earth strap and also the engine earth strap as I recall these caused problem on the 2.0ltr.
-
Hi guys thanks for your feedback on this issue I brought a new battery 2 mht ago so not that, cleaned and took apart the tiny valuve that was not stuck, I had cam belt changed 3 mht ago trouble seems to have started shortly after that.
also noticed at about 40miles hr seems to feel like its not pulling right, and idle is between 6/8 thou but can drop out , prob need to get codes but the only thing haven't changed is the crank sensor. leads and coil been done , and new cat. was running without no trouble for months lol.
ive spent to much now to get rid :D had 3 omegas this is the baby being the 2.0 16v and most trouble lol' is crank easy to change ? cant see any pics or things for the 2.0 16v I thanks again all Ree.
-
if you had all those symptoms on v6 i would say crank sensor-try a breakers-for one-if probs go-bonus-but still would say cam sensor IMO and yes sensors easy on 4 pot its on passenger side of engine block :y and cam sensor up top at front-just behind cam wheels :y
-
I do not understand how cam or crank sensor failure would cause 'all dash lights on, power steering going', etc. There is a mystery here.
-
hi again thanks for your posts, yes strange indeed, also when I restart which goes straight away first click engine starts all lights go off except not sure if its seat belt or air bag , it takes about 30secs to go off that's the last light to go out., it norm happ when im slowing down whilst car in motion its fine its under breaking it cuts out , but not all time , if it is the sensor can it go alltogether and leave you stranded ??been hap once to often now ,instead of once in blue moon :o . like I said needs resolving as I feel its dangerous to drive ,as car nearly hit us from behind after cutting out ,and no steering and breaks minimum >:( . thanks again oof.

Engine's stalled - thats whats caused all dash lights to come on and no power steering ::)
-
hi thanks for your input I know this hap, just need to know why :-[ doesn't hap all the time im baffled lol runs ok till suddenly nothing thanks Ree.
-
Ime if a car stalls at tick over, it's the tick over or idle control valve at fault. The dash lights have come on, and the power steering cut out, because the engine has stalled.
There is a guide on cleaning 4pot icv iirc. :)
-
hi chris tx mate for the info I have had this off a cleaned , done amf, pipes , gonna try the crank sensor only bit not touched yet ;D tx Ree.
-
Does it stall when you have eased or the gas or coming to a stop? Ie the revs drop....
If so as others have said sounds like Idle Control Valve stalling the engine :y
-
As above, almost certainly the ICV and breathers.

Engine's stalled - thats whats caused all dash lights to come on and no power steering ::)
It happened to me with the car in gear and still bowling along. I was in a manual Senator, but it was an eerie experience. Dash lights on etc seems hardly worth mentioning if the engine has stopped. It was a bit similar when the aux belt pulley seized on my 2.5 Omega manual, but then the cause was obvious and the belt failed. On the Senator the belt survived. Car in this thread is an auto.

First time the crank sensor failed on the MV6, I was tanking along through France at a decent speed, first thing I noticed was the MID flagged up gearbox fault, followed quickly by most of the dash lights coming on one at a time. I'd automatically lifted off the throttle as soon as MID warning came on, so there was a moment or two when I hadn't realised it had stalled. Fortunately, I had enough momentum to coast to next slip road, at which point I noticed how heavy the steering was without power ;D

thanks for all your views on this matter ,just got back from garage they stuck a code reader on it but to no avail as it would no read any faults , been advised that it could be crank sensor or petrol pump in boot ? would that be a cause ?? tx again all Ree.

hi again , paper clip test does not work ?? followed vid to the letter nothing lights went out held it for ages just batt light left on :-[ never mind may cost a furtune to find the fault lol. strange garage couldn't find codes either ???

No codes then :)
-
no :( any clues ??? gonna try changing crank sensor as not done that yet, and check out the pet pump, if that fails ill be back :D ...... tx all anyway /////////
-
similar prob turned out I think in the end to be idle jet, when I did all breathers and IACV, it was nowhere near the 1/16 it should be, cleaned all and no probs since

Clean the ICV and breathers before you start replacing parts, follow the guide in the maintenance section.

hi peeps again update on my cutting out issues, just had crank sensor replaced with original part replaced petrol pump and top plate got it all back 2gether took it for a spin not 2mins up road just stopped again :'( have not done cam sensor im running out of ideas :-[ ticks over at 8/9 thou revs when put into drive it drops down to below 4/5 ? and rev counter does sometimes waves up and down but perfect in park or neutral, after changing pump would I have got a air lock if so will it clear itself ? or do I need to bleed it somewhere ?
-
p.s have cleaned vaulve out and done breathers ;) would it gunge up that quickly ??
-
how many miles has the icv done, on my old 2.0ltr I could only get about 90/100k miles out of one before it was scrap, symptoms your describe are similar to those that I experienced , but not quite identical !
-
sounds to me like air lock--remove petrol cap-take for drive-careful though-reckon its vent return is kinked/blocked :y
-
Hi guys well I done the petrol cap thing put another £20 in it went for a drive and covered 60 miles without a hicth, pulling really well best drive yet I feel. :y fingers crossed it was either pump or crank lol took me nearly 2 weeks to get it to this stage :( lol nearly finished the old girl will post some pics up of it now well tarted thanks again all for your input ,may take out the icv and give it another clean up ,may replace it lol just in case :-X owes me to much to sell it now :D :D :D just done 1001658 hope for another engine still really tight tx Ree.
