Title: 2.2 Operating running temperature
Post by: PAULCDX on 30 July 2013, 15:51:52
Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered before.

Just wondered what the correct normal temp should be on the 2.2 ?

My temp needle likes to sit 90+ most of the time and reaches and sits at 95 before coming back down, is this normal or a tad to high?  ???

Could I have a thermostat issue?

Unrelated I think but my Air con isn't cold at all so I'm guessing there is a leak or needs a re-gas  :-\

Thanks in advance.

Paul  ;)

My 2.2 sits at 85, does this 99% of the time.

In heavy traffic, stop start stuff, occasionally reaches 90....

Hi Mark,

No idea to be honest, haven't had the car long.......... Most of the time she sits at 90 but does like to go up to 95 quite a lot and then will come down........ Have been checking coolant and no losses anywhere that I can see and level is always correct

Thats a little hot for my liking, both my 2.2 and fatherT's 2.2 will sit at 85 for normal driving conditions

Oh??  ???

What's your initial thoughts mate? Nice and clean red coolant in the header and no issues with Oil / mayo etc  :y

I was thinking of having the stat changed to see if that cured the temp gauge reading?  :-\

I'd be tempted to see what tech2 is reading, as the gauges are not very accurate.

Normally a sticky stat means it runs cool, 75/80, not fully opening.

Umm, not sure then mate.

Is it related to air con not cold? Poss air con leak as previous owner said he'd had a dye test done but nothing was found  :-\

My 2.2 air-con has not worked for years, FatherT's air-con also bust, that's why he is borrowing the 3.2, it has super cold air-con  8)

Will let you have a look  ;)  ;D

Between 80C and 85C in "normal" use here - on a hot day in traffic or on long steep hill sometimes hits 90C.

Just a thought but its prob unrelated. My header tank sensor is faulty as I keep getting the coolant level check on the display, related or not?

I've got new coolant and a header tank ready, may as well get the stat changed at the same time Ok Mark ?  ;)  :) ;D

Proves how much I know mark ;D  ::)

So would a stat change be the first place to start?  :-\

I would do what Tunnie said earlier, get diagnostic live readings from the ECU to see what temp reading it is seeing :y

Mine does start off happily on 85 but will then creep up to 90 then 95 before coming back down to 90.......... Sitting in traffic will creep back up to 95 then sit there before coming back down etc.........  :(  ???

I don't think my 2.0 has ever sat at 80 degrees in this summer.

The temp goes up to 92 degrees, the stat opens and the temp drops back down and then goes to approx. 90 degrees. If sat in traffic, the temp will go up to 95 degrees and then drop back down to 90 degrees.

I will admit that it has climbed about 2 degrees higher since I changed the HBV, flushed the system out and added an extra litre of antifreeze and some water wetter.

By the sound of it you don't have anything to worry about as long as the gauge doesn't head any further north than mid 90's and comes back down when the fan cuts in. My 2.2 Saloon has always read 89ish and climbs to an indicated 95 when the fan cuts in, but live data shows the actual normal running temp. to be 86deg and the fan cuts in dead on 92deg. My 2.2 Estate reads a steady 85 and the fan cuts in dead on 92 and live data confirms those temperatures as spot on, so as others have said, a live data reading will give you a definitive answer :y

Cheers Ian and Phil  :y

Ok looking forward then I will get some live readings to show exactly what the temp is but from the sound of it then I don't have to much to worry about. Guess sitting in traffic in hot weather doesn't help  ::)

Fans are kicking in around 92 / 95 and do bring the needle down but she will creep back up but never goes over 95.  ???

Just an update on this :

Driving home in the pouring rain the the other evening with headlights on and heating on quite full, I noticed a very faint red battery light on the dash  :o

When I turned the heating / climate off the faint light went out, turned it on and it came back on very faintly?

Only noticed it when it was dark in the car and all things switched on all at once.....

Is this related in anyway to my temp needle issue or have I now possibly got an issue with the alternator?  :'(

Thanks for any help,  ;)

If the auxilliary belt tensioner is doing its job properly then it sounds like an Alternator issue :-\
And no, it hasn't any bearing on your engine temperature, the cam belt drives the waterpump on a 2.2 :y

Cheers Phil,

I will keep an eye on dash and see if the light comes back On. It may be that I had everything on at once and only a short trip etc  :-\ :-\

i have a 2.2 petrol also. when you sit idleing for a long period of time she will reach 100 and over. what would my problem be here?

Fans not coming on, that is way too hot! I'd investigate that ASAP  :y

Sat idling for over half an hour and watched the temp gauge reach 95 before fans kicked in and then needle came down to 90.

Once the car has reached it's operation temp after twenty mins or so she will sit between 90 / 95 all the time??  ???

Normal? I'm not convinced  :-\
