Title: British Gas - what a surprise !
Post by: Rog on 17 October 2013, 13:49:08
Well here we go, same as every recent year. The only difference this year is that SSE did it first.

9.2 price rise  :o  I run a business, I would never get away with doing this year after year. Watch the Centrica profits early next year.

I now regard Arthur Daley, Estate Agents and used car dealers as respectable and honest compared with this lot  >:(

. . . . of course there are all the normal BS excuses, global markets blah distribution blah investment blah

Is there not a simple website where you can see standing charges and usage rate costs side by side for all providers?

One of the switching sites maybe.

It is not easy - all this difference in structure of  standing charges is designed to confuse with some being high with a low unit rate. We are with SEE but prices seem to be only going up to what an EDF fix is now

I am far from daft but, even looking at the new 'easy to understand' paperwork I struggle to see what we use, and what they predict our use is for next year would be wonderful......... :D :D :-\ :-\

We are with npower and they have just credited £491 into our bank account and halved our monthly payment....... :y :y  I know, it only means I paid too much last year, but better this way than tother....... ;) ;)

Not really. They have been investing your money for the last year, when you could have been doing that yourself. ;D

I think npower have made a ball.... error on my anticipated gas consumption, searching for figures to show the meerkat it says that from 26th Sep 2013 I used 314 units and up till 26 Sep 2014 I will use 0 Units......... ::) ::) ::)

I thought the same until I took the time and effort to look at SSE profits in 2011-2012 where the domestic retailing made 4% profit and their most profitable division between 7 and 8%. Yes, from 2011-12 to 2012-13 their profits did go up and by more than the rate of inflation at 5.6%, which is not good in these lean times of falling real wages, BUT the biggest single rise at 13% was in what they have to pay (by collecting from us) in taxes to the government to provide green subsidies.

It was Red Ed as Liebour's Energy Minister that signed up to all of these climate change treaties and endorsed, accepted and gold plated the EU's ruinous expensive energy policies and now his latest con-trick is to try to cover his tracks by bankrupting the suppliers through a price freeze.

I still fully intend switching, something I have never ever done before. I just see a constant pattern  - winter approaches, price increases announced, spring arrives with some kind of PR announcement like "Prices Held" or even reduced a bit.

I know I can be a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but it's intestesing how quickly this has disappeared from the media spotlight  ::)

Just switched from Southern Electric to little known First Utility. Estimated savings £300 per annum to April 2015. Used Energy Helpline and accurate consumption data from my on line bills

The problem with comparing prices is trying to find out what tariff you're currently on. The comparison sites list about 100 tariffs for my current supplier, for gas alone, and about as many more for leccy. None of them match the one printed on my bill. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26795734/Smilies/banghead.gif)

You also have to enter your gas consumption in kWh. How daft is that when I log my consumption based on meter readings in m3?  ::)

I think they all show the conversion into kwH on bill - well at least Southern Electric do. On line accounts definitely do.

yip thats right they do. BUT they charge for exactly what you use in Kw on your electric, ie. 200kw you get charged per Kw. which is about 3 times more than gas. But the Con is in the gas.
most modern gas meter are metric cubic metres, easy enough to convert into Kw s, but if you actually worked out the conversion to Kw,which 1/3 third the price of Electric, you will see your gas does nt cost a whole lot of £££ S. So they have this statment in their bills which says..
When a Cubic meter of Gas is Burnt it does nt always produce the same amount of energy so we convert Kw s into Units. How convenient for them >:(

Not going to comment on BG price increase but on the subject of ripping of decent folk. My uncles boiler has seen better days and has decided to play up. Now dear uncle is in his 70s and lives alone and his first thought is to ring the so called people in the know them being British Gas. Engineer comes out for an arranged fee i and tells him you appliance sir is old and needs renewing. OK says uncle how much  £3000 pound sir fitted including warranty. Well you can imagine my response once he told me nearly died on the spot rip of bar stewards.
Well tonight been on the net got prices for a Worcester boiler approved by Witch and only £570 + vat. Ok need some one to fit it but £3000 i dont think so.

BRITISH GAS YOU SUCK.  >:( >:( >:(

So, what this amounts is that they are all a bunch of thieving conmen not just BG.

Competition is supposed to "healthy" and provide better "value for customers". Seems to me the competition is to see who holds out longest before jumping on the bandwagon and squeezing us till the pips squeek.

Now where are my woolly jumpers and thermal underwear ? Actually I've just had an idea, I'll dig out my old one piece ski suit  - and live in it  ;)

My supplier announced an increase as well.....just 4.5% from Jan 7th....

So begs the question......why do the 'big 6' need to make 9 or 10% increases when my small, in comparision, supplier can get by with just increasing it by 4.5%??  :-\

My answer is.....my supplier doesnt have shareholders all wanting dividends on their shares  :-\
