A rare and presumably expensive option on early Omega Bs, was reference to it in one of the irmscher brochures, iirc there's a picture in the thread detailing the development of the Omega B from 1994-2003, loads of pics, info, prototypes, all in German... posted 6-8 months ago perhaps :-\

7 Seats were available way back when, it was a conversion that we consider on our old 95 Select estate, iirc was about £250 as an after market conversion....... ;) ;)

I've never needed or considered a 7 seat estate conversion with 2 rear facing 'dicky' seats, but a good number of years ago I saw a US based telly programme re car crashes and the vulnerability of passengers depending on where they sat. The showed 2 crash test dummy kids  (7 to 10yr old) sat in the back of a US 'station wagon' facing to the rear. The car was hit fairly hard on the rear, tailgate opened and the 'kids' fell forward ie towards the rear of the car, just as the car that had hit them was bouncing back to hit them again. This time though the 'kids' were by now half in & out of the back of the car ........  :o :o :o :o
I've never fancied the idea since.  :-\

I have a '96 Irmscher brochure on its way from Germany, which clearly details the rear facing seat installation...

When it arrives I shall post the pic along with the relevant part number(s) for reference :y

Which is pretty much why we did not do it....... :)

I used to have to sit in the dicky seats in the back of Dad's Citroen DS Safari, but they where side facing.

Was one of the few options back then for 7 seats, and Dad was clearly a fertile old bugger ;D

They were a big car in their day ...... I couldn't tell you the last time I ever saw one, even at shows

Those rear seats were popular options in Volvo and Merc estates... not sure if they're now illegal in new cars, but certainly the last V70  and E Class offered them as options :-\

Peugeot did things a bit differently, with a forward facing third row, retaining some boot space... a 505 Family estate would give the current Galaxy a run for its money in the '7 people plus luggage' competition.

istr that the 406 was also available as a factory 7 seater :-\

The scaremongering of NCAP got rid of the 3rd row in most cars.  :y

I can see why too,the third row in my Discovery are forward facing but the headrest almost touches the tailgate glass,we very rarely use them because of this.

As Al above says, there seem to be a lot of fairly new E Class Merc with the rear facing 3rd row ....... I doubt my R Class is included in NCAP  ;)

There's not a lot of room behind my 3rd row seats either, though it'd need to be a tall car to hit anyone  ???

My XC90 still has a fair bit of room between tailgate and rear 3rd row  :y. It does make me wince when I see rear headrests within 6 inches of the rear window on any car  ???. The Volvo is quite high at the rear too. Ultimately depends what hits you and at what speed.
My dad used to have the 404 estate with the 3rd row - didn't even have seatbelts in the front when he bought it. I remember going to a scrap yard with him to get a set of fixed belts out of a car to fit in it (front only) and we both couldn't figure out at first why we ended up covered in blood 'til we realised it wasn't ours.. :o :o
