The scaremongering of NCAP got rid of the 3rd row in most cars.  :y

I can see why too,the third row in my Discovery are forward facing but the headrest almost touches the tailgate glass,we very rarely use them because of this.

As Al above says, there seem to be a lot of fairly new E Class Merc with the rear facing 3rd row ....... I doubt my R Class is included in NCAP  ;)

There's not a lot of room behind my 3rd row seats either, though it'd need to be a tall car to hit anyone  ???

My XC90 still has a fair bit of room between tailgate and rear 3rd row  :y. It does make me wince when I see rear headrests within 6 inches of the rear window on any car  ???. The Volvo is quite high at the rear too. Ultimately depends what hits you and at what speed.
My dad used to have the 404 estate with the 3rd row - didn't even have seatbelts in the front when he bought it. I remember going to a scrap yard with him to get a set of fixed belts out of a car to fit in it (front only) and we both couldn't figure out at first why we ended up covered in blood 'til we realised it wasn't ours.. :o :o
