How many people would be interested in either of the following...
1. 3/7/14-7/7/14 make your own way.
2. A bit of a road trip either side of the dates above.
Principle proposal would be...
Camping here...
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=119785.msg1521991#msg1521991 (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=119785.msg1521991#msg1521991)
€100 per pitch for the above dates.
Le Mans here...
http://www.lemansclassic.com/ (http://www.lemansclassic.com/)
€53 per person for full weekend tickets.
Ferries...
Getting across the Channel starts at £35 each way.
If making your own way to the weekend, then Pompey to St Malo/Le Harve is straightforward enough.
For the extended trip, Dover to Calais/Dunkirk gives the best opportunities.
This is testing the water for the idea, if enough interest, then would be looking at booking summat more concrete early in the New Year...

30 day poll added :y

I've voted but can't promise we could go ;)

Can't make it as I have a race :(
-
What a brilliant idea :)
-
Great idea ... road trip sounds brilliant .. but unable to use the chunnel due to LPG ... however either ferry would suit .. :)

It's stupid isn't it. You can't take your gas powered car on the tunnel, but I can tow a caravan through containing two gas bottles ..... ??? ??? ???

Yup and the "reason" is even more stupid (as I have been told - no idea exactly how accurate this is)..... when they designed the chunnel they expected/planned for caravans to use it, and they knew 'vans carried LPG. They never planned for cars with LPG tanks......
So the "risk assessment" that was done, and formed part of the overall approval, did not include LPG cars. It would now cost silly money to redo the whole risk assessment just to include LPG cars.. so it is cheaper to simply ban them.
Same goes for many of the tunnels in which LPG cars are banned.
I've also been told its because you can physically turn the caravan cylinders off manually . and you can't with a car system.
-
It *may* be a tad close to other breaks I have planned either side, so cannot commit currently. Bit awkward booking leave with work at the moment is well.
But in principle, I like the idea - whether weekend or extended trip would be dependent on the work situation.
-
I won't be talking an LPG powered car, so not bothered about the tunnel ;) (still prefer the ferry ride, TBH. Less boring, and the worst that can happen is that one sinks so you have to wait for the next one). ;D

That's pretty much my take on the subject... my only rule is not to travel on P&O ::)
-
Norfolk Line (now DFDS) every time for me. The tunnel has it's uses but it doesn't suit me when holidaying. Oh, and the LPG makes it awkward ::)

Likewise since Stena went :y

Talking of ferrys, will I have any trouble getting an Irmscher sprung, Irmscher bodykitted car onto Brittany Ferries' finest?
After getting stuck in a multistorey in Sheffield last year, paranoia has set in...

Had no trouble with mine last year, so no, you need to raise the rear. ;D
-
I like the idea, if I went I would take the bike. However I doubt I can make it for reasons I cannot say yet. If this had been this year, then be much more doable. :(

As half of you will be going on a ferry as you have cars powered by forklift fuel.
from dover you have the cheapest which is my ferries (use to be sea France) food is vile, facilities are disgusting. Then there dfds never had to use them,so cant comment. Would always use p+o the two new super ferries, very nice, and you will get a irmescher on them,as if cant get on car deck they put you on freight deck..
also last question in the poll is null n void. You only need proof of id. Eg plastic drivers licence or a drivers card(tacho), or birth certificate.

DFDS Seaways have nice boats, used them a few times. :y

I was under the impression that, as we are not part of the Schengen agreement, a passport would be necessary.

Thank you, Nige. I'm always right, of course, but nice to get confirmation. :y

Several of ABS,s "Norfolk Monza Mafia" always make this annual trip. I could ask how they travel as they have been doing it for several years

With a nod to those who don't do camping, how about group accommodation as an alternative :-\
With that in mind, have done a bit of rummaging and found this place about half an hour from Le Mans...
http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/le-mans/111003 (http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/le-mans/111003)
There isn't much available for large groups over that weekend nearer, but there are also other things to see/do nearby...
-
Looks good Al, if there's enough people interested. :)
See what the overall preference is though. ...good trawling. :)
-
Nice spot! Can accommodate up to 16 guests. Wonder what the car park is like ;D

Yes will it take the inevitable jacking up on stands. ;D

Sadly I won't be able to come to this. It coincides with the F1 at Silverstone to which I am going to watch. :y

I am lucky....that I have parents that take pity on their poor student son and are buying the tickets :-[ ::) ;D
We're only going for one day cos of the cost; so it'll either be the Friday practise or the race day (I see no point of going to Qualifying as it's the shortest period of time you see the cars for AND you have to pay full parking price).
Anyway... this thread wasn't about F1. Please continue as you were... ;D

there's a lot of truck drivers entering and leaving England then with the wrong id documents then.
to travel within the European union states you need a recognized form of id and a photo card driving licence is on off them. But what do i know....

Not much, apparently..... :P
We are not part of the Schengen agreement......read up on it.

Nope. Never been sat for hours/ days at Calais waiting for a crossing, due to strikes, weather. Or been stopped by gendarmes,Dounias, or local plod. Never had to produce id to a gun waving bellygum policeman.. I know nowt..

Entry requirements
Passport validity
For stays of up to 3 months your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay; you don’t need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this. For stays of longer than 3 months, contact the French Embassy for further information about entry requirements.

Remember.....those travelling to Me Mans are not truck drivers.
-
The real world and the virtual world world that some off you live in have become blurred.

Bollix. You are wrong. Admit it and move on.

I can't speak for the chunnel as I've never used it .. but for the last 20 years I've been going to France (and back) by ferry at least once a year , some years 2 or 3 times (last year just twice) and WITHOUT FAIL I have always had to produce a passport.... usually to the ferry company on the outward journey, rarely to French Customs, but 100% to UK Border Control on the return leg.

Resurrection of the dead i know, but the wheel thief seems to have disappeared, has he booked a room at Wakefield's 5star luxury hotel. I digress.
At approx tea time tomorrow will be at dover boarding a ferry, using only a driving licence to get on. Will post the results for the non believers...
