Just got an email advertising the above for £80! Better than half price.
Think I'll have a look on the way home from work :)
-
Trouble is the new kit isn't as good as the previous version which wasn't as good as the previous before that.
The current one misses a load of spanners, in favour of 3/8" drive torx. The previous one misses some useful deep sockets in favour of screwdriver bits.
Even at £80, I doubt I'll be replacing my 2 melted ones :'(
-
Oh really? Maybe not bother then.
I had planned on buying the ratchet spanner set at £40, despite my hints it hasn't appeared under the tree ;D
Then I thought I would go for the 120 piece maybe for an extra £60, and the jury was still out when I got this email.
If it's not worth it though .... ???
-
I think your better off with the 150 piece, even wothout the 18mm spanners they've stupidly removed.
-
With the money you save on the kit you can add the spanners that are reportedly missing from the up to date kit.
I couldn't recommend the 150 piece kit enough. I've had mine about 3 years now.... the only thing that broke was a T55 bit (that was my fault... it was 3/8 and I should've upgraded to the 1/2 version for trying to undo head bolts on Ralf ::)) and the locking bit fell out of the screwdriver bit....they easily replaced both at hellfrauds :y
I couldn't imagine my kit being in a ''proper'' tool chest..... this things in a plastic suitcase that comes to the car with you lol easy peesy.... and if I ever get in a garage I would not be upgrading....this will do me fine....well this and of course the other stuff you need like buzz guns and the like :y

It is worth it, all day long at 80 quid, even with some of the older items missing, wouldn't think about it for too long though as fairly sure its a 1 day wonder that ends at midnight tonight. :y

+1 :y
not sure you can get an equivalent kit with so much in for so little anywhere else. the quality is great also. not only do I use tem on my car but I use them at school too and as hand tools go theyre just as good as the likes of strap on
-
Thanks for the input guys - I've reserved one at my local store, and can pick it up before next Monday. Whilst I have most bits and bobs, they're in a toolbag and as said, this will be so much easier. :y

definitely mate! ive no idea why people would have tool chests.... you have to pick the tools you want and then go back to the chest when you invariably forget something ::)
although having said that I have a 5 draw tool chest as it was given to me. its not the best and it doesn't have the brand name bollerks on it..... but come on.... who's bothered about that? I use it for other tools like screw drivers, wrenches I bought that weren't in the kit (bigger than 19mm), gear wrenches etc etc.
whilst im off on one ::) I would say the hellfrauds advanced (or pro, cant remember which mine are) are really bloody good. mine don't have the heads that are on an axis i.e, they're fixed heads but theyre bloody handy in tight spaces. I tested the 13mm one out at school (not going to break mine! ;D) and it broke loose a very stubborn nut.,...even though with my own tools id never break anything loose with a gear wrench... I just wanted to test to see if it would. and it did. and I was very pleased :)

Oi, now don't be knocking the
tool chest Jewelery box of "Goochi tools" as 2woody once described mine ;D
While the Halfords 150 is quite comprehensive there's a whole load of stuff that need proper storage, don't you know. (Points nose in air and leaves room ;D )
Pffff...peasants ! ::)
;) ;D

in reality chris al that's really needed is the Halfords kit and a box for ''beating'' equipment..... my biggest hammer's called Bruno 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Just to add the only thing I really would like from Santa is a set of flare wrenches (gets ready for onslaught from AndyB for the overuse of the word 'wrench' ;D).
I've not found them necessary as I've been lucky at knocking lines loose in the past with a normal open-end wrench spanner and I don't knock lines loose very often (once on line going to wheel cylinder to ma's ford and cant remember another time ;D) but they would make me feel professional. and theyre pretty :) :) :) :)
-
I got a 150 piece kit because it's got most of what you need in 1 box that's easily brought to where you're working or chucked in the car when you're travelling. It's pretty clear that the assortment of tools was drawn up by an accountant rather than a mechanic who's familiar with what sizes are frequently encountered, as there are some frustrating omissions where you have other sizes duplicated.
That said, it basically does the job, and is (when on special offer) a pretty cost effective leg-up into Omega mechanicing if you've got no tools at all. When at home, I do often find myself going to the trouble of waking across the garage to the better quality tools when the Halfords kit is in front of me, though.
I'd say, for serious work, you'll soon be looking for better quality kit so, in some respects, it might make more sense to buy that from day one. For just routine servicing, it's adequate, though.

Where would you say they're lacking in quality, Kev? As you mention, they omit a couple of key sizes.... the things that spring to mind are 9mm spanner (needed for Omega calliper bleed nipples) and a 16mm socket (I think).
Having thought again the lack of single hex sockets is a pain. A real pain in fact.
The spanners I suppose could be longer for better leverage but nothing a good smack of a hammer wont solve. :)

Yep, it's a pain that the sockets are all 12 point bar a couple of impact sockets, as they are a sloppy fit and it means that I have to reach for the surface drive sockets if anything is a little tight. I find the ratchet heads a bit bulky, yet somehow they are awkward to apply more than light force to. Just don't seem to inspire confidence. I much prefer the older "Professional" range of ratchets.
Spanners are OK but the missing sizes are a pain and they are not the easiest to grip.
Fine if the most you're likely to do is a cam belt change and good to chuck in the car in case you break down but otherwise, there's better kit around.

I agree... but I see that as a plus as I use the 1/2" to smack on the aforementioned short spanner (I've already been reported to the tool police for this :-[)
Re the spanners... I like them... but again I suppose the grip aspect is a personal thing.
i got around the double hex thing by purchasing a set of impact sockets (set by....Silverline...note to TB) and i just take these with the tool kit and if i see a bolt that's rusted ill use those. but then again i suppose that's a point against the Halfords set.

Give the trade card a flash at the till, you never know it may knock off a couple more quids! Did for me recently ;)
Nope, in this case, flashing a trade card will increase the price, as you will pay trade price, not offer price ;)

I thought it was down to the system as to whether it would be accepted or not. Surely they don't allow the yoofs to make the decision and override the system?
-
As has been suggested by Kevin Wood, the old Professional sets are better. The first of the Advanced are OK, except missing some of the useful sized deep sockets.
The current Advanced, I can see no benefit over the 120pc, which occasionally comes up for £59, except no rachet spanners with the 120pc (but the rachet spanners in all 150pc sets are a bit fiddly).
Even the 170pc is missing useful tools present in earlier 150pc sets, in favour of crap screwdriver bits.
If I could get a 150pc Pro set for half price, I'd buy a couple right now. The Advanced, nah, maybe at £40... (I have got a 120pc Advanced that cost £59 in the summer)

My only issue with the screwdriver bits is that they're difficult to find when you launch them across the garage in anger (at something unrelated to their use). ::)

I have the 150 Advanced set but while it is a useful kit you definitely need additional tools. I have a tool chest and my sockets are on several racks, according to size, in the chest. When you are working on the car, you pretty much know what the sizes of bolts range from so I just take that whole rack out with me. I still need a chest for all of the other tools that you accumulate, plus the pullers, slide hammers and other job specific tools.
I also prefer 1/2 inch drive sockets on most stuff whereas the 150 set seems to favour 3/8 for some sizes that I feel should be 1/2 inch drive. You do end up changing wrenches as well as sockets a lot. Still, it's handy to carry in the car as it's tidy. :y
I still think it's worth it at that price though. :y

That would have been that the trade price was approx 45% of the full retail ;). For example, trade on those lovely rachet spanners is a few quid cheaper half the retail :-X

I agree, if you lack a comprehensive socket set, one of the bigger Halfords Advanced is a great one to have, even if you have a tool chest, for that "sling it in the car" portability.
However, for use Omega owners, not sure the 150pc offers anything useful over the 120pc (unless you think the screwdriver bits are actually useful).

Yes I do. I never use the Allen keys. I never understood you phobia with screw driver bits.

Yeah, same bloody ones those moronic bean counting tosspots at Halfords decided to remove from the 150pc, ie spanners.
I find it sad that these kits are getting plundered as they are, to make the the £100 price point. I'd happily pay a little more if it had all the spanners put back in, and all the deep sockets that they removed when they changed from Pro to Advanced.
Or given that I don't work on old British shite, lose all the imperial and replace with the useful bits they have removed.

Ok now hold in a minute. You just spouted to me in the brakes thread that sweeping statements to all oofers aren't reasonable.
So how can we knock this kit to those that don't have it at all? Hmm? ;)

B&q have a socket set for 99 notes that looks similar to the old halfords pro ones.
Only had a brief look though.

I've no idea what TBs screwdriver bit issue is ;D but I agree that they could ditch those bloody imperials. never used them for anything :( having said that I supppse there will come a time when I need them.... that will be the day after I've sold them most likely ::)

They are so close together that I have to use long nose pliers just to get them out of the box. ;D ;D
I must admit, working on my car the last few days highlighted how many times I needed a tool and walked past my open 150 set to get my Draper sockets. Used an 18mm a lot today and I find the Halfords set 18mm too shallow. I have the 150 set in addition to my other sockets sets and general tools. :y
Edit: Just thought, is there a deeper 18mm in the lid. I can't remember as I never use anything out of the lid. :-\ ;D

Was it an adapter (which the 150pc doesn't have, but we all normally throw in anyway?)?
170pc have the adapters, but again misses out too much useful stuff that was in the old 150pc Pros.
The 120pc has pretty much everything the 150pc has in (except less of the screwdriver bits), and as Fuse18 says, can often be picked up quite cheap. Given that neither now provides a comprehensive set for Omegas, mine, like Fuse18's, will be the "spare, thrown in the boot, just in case", and I'll have to get something more comprehensive for the garage.

Absolutely, so do I. But as Fat head refuses to accept, it's not for him. Its for general oofers.
We can't make sweeping statements on brakes apparently, but we can discount this kit to members that don't have a socket set at all.
For the money, there isn't better. Still. IMO. 20pc included.
Anyway, I'm sure members are smart enough to make their own minds up. :)
Thanks to the op for the heads up. :y

I compared the 2 sets today (the new style ones), the 120pc is missing the 19mm spanner, which is a bit crap. Needed on the plenum vac pipe and rear caliper mounting bolts (if they need a whack before using a socket).
Other than that, seems the 150pc just has a few more screwdriver bits.
Obviously down to individuals if they think that makes it worth the extra :). Yer pays yer money....
I'm still annoyed with Halfords that they have ruined a once excellent kit (150pc, esp the Pro, but also the first of the Advanced). Even more annoyed as I lost both of my 150pc Pros, and wanted to replace them. With the current tat Halfords are offering, they will not be replaced with a Halfords Socket Set.
TB goes off an stomps his feet, in the hope somebody shoots the bean counters at Halfords.

Give the trade card a flash at the till, you never know it may knock off a couple more quids! Did for me recently ;)
Nope, in this case, flashing a trade card will increase the price, as you will pay trade price, not offer price ;)
50% off socket sets offer a few weeks ago , trade card got me an extra 10% off ;)
I've bought 2 items from 2 different Halfords stores today, on retailed at £40 (sale), trade was £60. Other retailed at £30, trade £45.
-
I bought the tool chest top and bottom and got the 150 piece set for £299 then got £30 refunded as the tool chest had a slight dent ,so I now have two 150 sets :P
They were doing the tool chest as a bundle the other day top intermediate and bottom for £249
-
Picked up a ratchet spanner set down for £79.99 to £39.99, dropped to £37.99 with trade card, asked if the same applies to socket sets on offer and the answer was yup!
-
It was the ratchet spanner set on offer that drew me to this in the first place. Never thought about the card though - would be handy if it worked all round!

Yeah, I wanted that chest set, but nowhere to store. Hopefully it will return soon.

The trade price of that set is £37, no matter what the retail price is (I've bought enough of them). If they had a fire sale, and dropped it to £20 retail, trade would still be £37. The trade price is fixed, set in stone.
Hope that makes sense
I picked up more stuff yesterday, £40 retail (half price sale), £60 trade.

If one of them is the older set (without the red screwdriver bit insert), wanna sell it ::)

I see they have a web exclusive of the 150 piece set at 100 notes with the 25 piece combi spanner set included for free (6-28mm inclusive plus 30 and 32mm)

The included spanner set is not Advanced, hence not covered by the life warranty.
The Advanced Spanner set/tray has recently been for sale for under £30, but only goes to 24mm (from 6mm, all sizes included).
I wonder if Halfords putting together the bundle of 150pc, plus spanner set is an admission of realisation that they have dropped a bollock by removing so many spanners from the socket set....?
-
Well I decided that on that deal, I should treat myself, so ordered one............ :y :y

You ordered one as well?......... :D :D tbh, you can't go far wrong at the price imo, and my sockets are a bit of a miss match some 30 years or older; whether I need them or not is a separate issue....... ;) ;) :y

I haven't as it goes, but felt it warranted a song :D

I went down a different route, far more comprehensive, for around £20 more... ...but lost the flexibility to have it all (neatly) in a carry around case. The other downside, is mine lacks any torx sockets, so need to buy a rail.

As a matter of interest, please do tell ......... ???

They're not Advanced and reading the reviews they're not Professional either..... presumably they'd simply be labelled ''Halfords'' :-\
Not that it really matters.... they're exactly the same thing.

Ps, £30??? Is that the spanner set that I put the link to? Is that on its own? Where did you see this cos I really want that set and obviously I'd prefer to pay £30 instead of £49.99 ;D

Only without the lifetime warranty, thus I suspect not quite the same quality. That said, they look reasonable quality.

Been in most stores recently, as part of the 1/2 price socket set sales (usually £59.99). I've been entirely unable to find online, so I end up ringing around all the local stores, and had the last one from Banbury about a fortnight ago.
Its the tray, designed to fit in tool chest drawers.

Yeah, sorry, apart from that :)
Looked at the reviews. pretty decent :y
I wouldn't (personally) want to use the plastic box to hang up on the world.... which reminds me I'm going to make a shadow board when I get a chance. pretty handy
-
Shadow boards are incredibly handy in educational and other shared workshop places, for immediately seeing if something hasn't been replaced. Not sure it has a use in a home environment.

It's not to see if anything missing, he needs to write what they are underneath.

When your small tool chest is over flowing and there's not enough room in the garage to swing a cat it makes sense to me.

I have the old 150 piece and the spanner set (8mm to 32 iirc)
if I was out to buy a set now I would buy the 170 piece as it comes with a few VERY usefull parts never seen in the 150 (size adaptors and such)
-
Ordered on Thursday evening and arrived today........ :o :o I am sure is said due Jan 6th but well happy...... :y :y
I did under estimate the physical size of the spanner set though.... ;) ;)
And I told swmbo about it, she wanted to know why I had not asked her to get it for me.........you just can't win sometimes........ ;D ;D
