hello all
ive just bought an old 97 3.0 mv6 and I think its gonna be a lemon :-*
first up its always saying "coolant level" on the display but it has loads in it (needs changing though as its pure brown)
splutter turning left when fuel low (assuming its lower than it says)
wet boot (and noticed a small patch of rust either side under screen (is this a common issue/fix)
climate control only blows ambient air and cant demist the windows (it blows cold but not ac cold no matter what)
clutch slips quite badly when given the beans (is this a major jon on these or can I attempt it (first rwd car)
radio says " 7 safe " on the display cant seem to enter the code its a ccr600
oh and the exhaust has developed a major blow due to a pipe detaching from a box lol sounds epicly loud
so its got its issues! any help muchly appreciated
-
That sounds sick :'( :'(
Could be your oil cooler knackered .
Coolant sensor knackered or just the float stuck .
Spluttering turning left ?
Wet boot , check the rear vents not blocked in boot cubby holes . Maybe the boot rubber seal also split .
Air con needs re gas or new seals as its leaked all its coolant .
Clutch , prob needs a new one .
Radio , you need to leave the radio on for a long run then it will let you enter the code .
New exhaust .
Not much ;D ::)

Welcome to the forum mate :)
Don't despair, it's not great but nothing that can't be resolved. There are plenty of people on here who will give help and guidance if you need it. Have a look through the maintenance guide, it's well laid out, so have a look round there.
Keep an eye out in the meets section to see if any are happening local to you, pop down and put faces to names. It's well worth it :y
-
Yeah , all doable and with expert help and advice :y
-
the spluttering only happened after the low fuel light was on for a mile or 2 it was fine before... see how it goes tomorrow I guess
it did have a slight flat spot low in the revs
oil looked fine (quite good actually) the coolant looks rough gonna flush that and have a look at the heater bypass ive been reading about
exhaust I can fix (the box looks newish its just the pipe has separated (crap weld)
my main concerns are the climate control (as its basically gonna be undrivable with the mist) and the clutch (bits don't seem to pricey but may need a guide on it)
-
Brown coolant usually a sign of oil contamination of coolant - as said above classic symptom of oil cooler failure. Sensible not to drive car until replacement oil cooler fitted ;)
HBV fault usually results in coolant loss ;) Coolant warning - probably sensor stuck/knackered if level ok.
Other faults - as others have said above ;)

could just be dirty having not been changed or anti-freezed for years. dont assume its oil cooler. ;)
if its got big lumps of oil in it then well yes, would be like choc ice cream.

Had two oil coolers go, both on mfl Elites, both had brown coolant, no "lumps" of oil, but a tad "frothy". ;)

Get the A/C checked for leaks and then re-filled and leave it on all the time.
-
it just looks rusty tbh doesn't have any oily sheen ?
the hbv I was wondering if it was the cause of no heat (the name bypass valve being the clue) I wondered if it stopped hot water ?
if not then I guess the search continues... im going to check the pipes tomorrow see whats hot.
I connected my op com to it (in hope of having option for the radio) but the climate control times out when trying to read any codes / tests
when I drain the coolant ill have a prod around for the level sensor couldn't see it on the outside (ala most other Vauxhalls)

poke your finger through the filler hole in header tank, its there. chances are if the coolant is that dirty then the matrix could be blocked. needs a good flush. :)
-
Bit concerned about the rough running if the fuel light had only just come on.
For the heating issues, check over the vac system first - there is a guide/layout diagram of the vac system in Maintenence Guides :y
-
Forgot, the coolant warning is a duff switch on the coolant bottle, quite common. Easiest fix is to replace bottle, about £30 (trade) from dealer.
-
Level sensor float is a golf ball sized lump straight down from the cap :y check also that the plug underneath is plugged in securely...
Clutch is only 23 bolts from daylight, but not really a driveway job unless you are 1) Clinically curious, 2) can get the car securely supported 18" off the ground and 3) know someone daft enough to help... on paper it's a 2-3 hour job :-\
-
I agree with Al, clutch not a difficult job but you MUST get the car 100% secure off the ground, cheap halfords stands won't suffice and you need a workshop quality jack not £30 2 tonne rubbish
I've done a few and now have it down to 4 hours if needsbd but I much prefer to take a leisurely day
Fuel filter , when was this last changed? The chugging on low fuel could be something that simple
Have a few days off in January if you want a pair of hands and some decent tools :y
-
ive got a pretty substantial garage (even has a fridge full of thatchers to keep spirits high) with reasonable tools so (having just spent a bit reading the guides section) I think the clutch looks do able (looks a damb sight easier than the saabs was) got a 4 ton long reach jack and a 3 ton Clarke (my main jack tbh) gonna get some better stands though (machinemart do some huge jobbies)
hadn't considered the filter (ran ok for the first 30 miles) but its on 106k ( I think) so its probably overdue
been out for a prod in the tank (cant start car due to exhaust and having neighbours) but I did feel the float thing and the warning did clear (then returned shortly after so looks like new bottle is on the agenda)
forum seems to be a wealth of knowledge :) oil cooler looks easy enough to change too
could end up being a tatty but nice to drive car with several hundred chucked at it ;D

shouldnt tell us things like that, you will end up with us all down there. lol :y
-
Sounds like its been neglected tbh. Some servicing and some new parts, all doable, just needs doing all at once. :(
Coolant colour, they do go brown if neglected. If you've been poking the float valve you would have noticed sludge if the oil cooler had gone. New bottle and a coolant flush/change should be fine.
-
ok so whats the best clutch brand to fit? sachs/luk etc ?
-
If you want to feel as safe as possible get the Clarke heavy duty 6 ton stands sold at Machinemart I believe. You will need a jack that will raise the vehicle high enough to get them under but once they're in place it's as safe as you can feel (not that I ever truly feel safe under cars....but that's my paranoia).
As a ''temporary fix'' Halfords sell a fix for joins between pipes and silencers. Only about £5 and it does work. As said only a temporary fix so you can drive it about for testing purposes. If you got a Halfords trade card the exhaust paste reduces from £3.99 a tin to something stupid like £0.70!!!!
-

Vauxhall clutches are more durable than LUK, but cost a bit more... that said Vauxhall flywheels are half the price of LUK ones :-\
Shop around :y

Apparently the Edwardian clutches are much better than the Victorian jobs. Obviously to match the age and quality of the original signal box. ;)

Xmas party in the garage ;D
Drop the coolant and see how bad the mixture is then flush it , could just be neglect like others have said .

thatchers is getting consumed as we speak might have to upgrade to the scrumpy if I find anything else lol
well.... I found the cause of the heater issue : >:(

engine looks ok:

wtf is this I found by the cd changer while looking for leak..?

in other news I put £40 in it and it still splutters like its about to die going round a corner with throttle on... so that remains (gonna go to Vauxhall and get some plugs/filters/matrix/clutch/etc soon
-
Check the coil pack for splits as well , is the scuttle leaking ? :-\
-
That suggests a leaking heater matrtix then :-\
Aircon should dry the air in the car without much fuss, once regassed, be a bit chilly though ::)
-
Im thinking its blown the cooler in the past (as it has a VERY shiney radiator wich looks new ) and the matrix is knackered but presumably a ball ache to change
-
Yeah not a fun job, looks like there is a lot of crap in the matrix looking at the inlet pipes. Sounds like it's been driven on a failed cooler and the matrix is full of oil...
-
I might try pumping some tfr into it and see if I can flush it
-

Nothing to lose... ...if its blocked, it may free it up. If it leaks, well, you'll soon find out.
Good luck!
-
Forgive my stupidity... but it looks like someone's removed the heater pipes and joined them together....???

Has the car belonged to the constabulary if so might be somthing they left in there or a phone unit :-\
-

Could it be that the level is low and a whole load of dirt has been sucked up. :-\
-
its not ex plod as far as I can tell has a sunroof and a few gizmos and no holes anywhere (interior being the only decent bit I think ) ;D
the matrix is indeed bypassed with what appears to be copper pipe
-
its for a phone, got one in my mv6, still works aswell. :y
-
Classic heater matrix bypass when it has failed.
Expect you will find it has a leak possibly from oil contamination, but either way to restore heat inside you are looking at replacing the matrix.
Done my own about this time last year and it is actually not too hard if you adopt " the cut,n,shut method" which I confess to doing. With care you will never notice it has been cut and not too pricey, but the 2 0 rings for the matrix feed pipes are VX only and down right extortinate but essential.
Good luck with it..no of it is in-summountable just the clutch being a tad more hard work.
-
cut n shut sounds right up my die grinders street :P
just reading the guide now... better get up Vauxhall and order a matrix tommorow
-
I ordered mine from factors cost about £40 but never priced from Stealers
Imagine genuine would have the 2 0 rings which seal the feed pipes where they go through the bulk head into matrix . These must be replaced with new as would probably leak again after fix
Took me about a morning from start to finish and as said when done and glued back almost invisible
-
euro car parts do one for £22 (doubt it has anything extra though) I will see what Vauxhalls best is then choose accordingly
so those issues should b e sortable now (thanks to this forum I might add) just the weird running issue to sort and it will be almost roadworthy!!

I bought one for a Corsa C tother day from ECP and it came with everything needed :y
-
took it out for a run today (minus the backbox I might add its in garage by the welder) spluttering seems to have stopped? revved clean to the limiter..
ive ordered new plugs all filters a clutch and a matrix (ecp had an offer on clutches at 15% off) just over 230 all in

Is there a reason not to put the wheels back on and lower them on to wheel ramps? Entirely safe, perhaps loss of height?
-
i do have a Halfords trade card (the paste was 78p iirc) but it didn't hold so ive ordered a new bit
I drove it around today and it felt fairly underpowered tbh and for some reason if you give it throttle at 1-1.5k it splutters badly but then pulls better... also noticed the header tank has a split round the cap today so I gotta get one of those aswell....
not really enjoying omega ownership tbh knowing its worth half what its cost to fix lol

Around £38 if you want a new one
-
well bad times for the omega... dropped a wrench today while clambering past it and broke the windscreen... :-X
as so few parts have been fitted so far im going to return what I can sell any decent bits and crush the rest
-
Thats a shame...
-
Add it to the list :y
Assuming there isn't a hole in it, fix all the other stuff, bung the insurers £75 ish and pop a new one in once ready to hit the road :y
And next time don't be so retarded clumsy ::)
-
tbh this thing has a whole heap of issues now... I was royally robbed buying it and even when it was drivable it was no were near the car I expected the omega to be...
bout the only good bits are the interior witch is tidy and the wheels seem ok (minus the centres...) and it had a manual box rest is pure shed
