Title: F1: 2013 and 2014 looks comparison...
Post by: Webby the Bear on 30 December 2013, 15:28:54
Although I love the look of the 2013 cars... I actually don't think the changes are as bad as peeps are making out...

Those nose sections look a bit daft too long and too low

Not as bad as I thought though  :y

Are the new noses like that to stop a car being launched if it hits the back of another car at high speed?

You would think the new sleeker nose would slide under a car in front more easily?

I presumed the low nose was to restrict airflow to the downforce aero under the car...?

Low nose, and no blown defuser = less down force both ends...?

Indeed, its to reduce aerodynamic efficiency, rather than safety grounds.

It would appear that the FIA have realised that F1, as it stood, was dull.

Can someone explain why in F1 folk cant just be told to build the quickest car possible and then see who wins?

.....i.e. why would they ban things and change things to make the cars slower?

Safety and ££££££

If they built the cars with the maximum down force, maximum power, the drivers would pass out. Ground effect was banned years ago for this reason.

Its one of the few justifications in life for management to exist.

Although IMO last season the real issue was the tyre management. Complete and utter farce. If f1 is the same in 2014 it won't matter what other rules they change, they'll have no fans left.

Because it wouldn't be possible to race (each other).

Look back at the ground effect cars F1 cars from the 1970s.  If you want racing, you have to make (genuine, not this DRS 'dangle berries') overtaking possible. The only way to allow (genuine) overtaking is to reduce aerodynamic effects.

If you want time trials, thats something else. But F1 is supposed to be a race.

They would also be so fast that an accident would often involve a car landing in the middle of the crowd,so current tracks would pretty much have to be scrapped and replaced with completely different types of design, including spectators who would need binoculars to see anything. And of course someone would need to come up with a braking system capable of stopping a 300mph, 300kg missile many times in the space of 70 laps.
Its a formula. Formulae have various ingredients (regulations in the case of racing formulae) to give a desired result or effect.
The formula has gone badly wrong in certain respects with each passing season in recent times. 2014 is going to have quite a different formula from what weve seen for a long time.
Whether or not it will be successful remains to be seen, but afaik they will still have mickey mouse type systems - DRS,KERS etc. so I have my doubts tbh.

So again I suspect I'll watch the first race of the season in hope that they can make it exciting racing, and then swear never to watch another race...

Even if it is exciting. With those type of systems its artificially manufactured excitement, rather than the genuine excitement that comes from real racing, which is why its on a hiding to nothing imo unless a few racing purists take over from the showbiz types who seem to be deciding the formula currently.
Its that dumbing down thing. Its everywhere these days.

It will never be exciting whilst we have gimmicks like DRS, KERS and forced pit stops.

Agreed.
Tyres should also be capable of lasting  race distance. Last season they weren't even capable of lasting between pitstops.

Those cars don't look very pedestrian friendly  :D

Bigger circuits not a problem... most major cities have motorway grade ring roads :y

M25 is about the right length too 8) might need resurfacing though ::)

Can either kers or drs work as was desired with the current tyre rules. Did we ever see the full effect of those over an entire race... As the I over riding hypocracy was the tyre management?

That oppsed everything for me. Can we judge drs and kers with the tyre rules of 2013?

For those that think it's all manufactured nonsense I have the ideal solution;

Every time there's a GP on, go and watch Rush instead ;D

Or just watching some real racing MotoGP, WSB, BSB, Touring Cars where the rules encourage overtaking, whereas from what I can see with F1, loads of forced pit stops as that is the only way the rules allow you to overtake, when out on track its an expensive dull procession, with the commentators trying to talk an exciting race.
