Title: Blower stopped working?
Post by: blackviper90210 on 01 January 2014, 15:05:20
Hi all, happy new year to you all!!

Not sure why, but my blowers have stopped working. Where and what fuse should I check first all please, or is there another possible cause??

Many thanks,

Dave

Has the scuttle drain been blocked? Any sign of dampness in passenger footwell?

Fuses under steering wheel, anything else not working? Worth checking #14 & #15

Blower and "hedgehog" controller up behind glove box.  Check blower working by applying 12V direct - if it is, most probably the controller gone.

Cheer dbug, I'll have to look at the weekend now as it's getting too dark and in work tomorrow :(

Thanks for the heads up on that though. I don't suppose you have a picture of what I'm looking for do you by any chance or can I not miss it?  :o

Cheers again!

Hi Dave,

Not sure if it's the same thing but had a similar problem with my Vectra C and it turned out to be the heater blower motor behind the glovebox had seized up etc.  :(

hello Dbug You say you have changed 2 Where did I go wrong when I tried to take one out of my last omega. I ended breaking off both support lugs. I could not find a way to hold a new hedgehog in and  ended up selling the car. It was very cold when I did it maybe the plastic lugs needed heating up prior to removal. Any tips in case I ever have to do it again. Bring it to you? :y

Maybe a dumb question to some, but how would I get to apply 12v direct to the blower?  Just run a wire straight from the battery.  ??? ???

Just bypass controller, or wire direct from battery as you said, or from spare battery or 12v power pack ;)

Ok, still not having any joy.

Glove box out and can see the connector on the side of the blower motor directly below, what I think is the hedgehog??

Do I just run a single live wire to the red wire on the plug of the blower motor?

TIA :y

Easier to pop the hedgehog out. Then bridge the two large connectors and if the fan doesn`t spin it`s donald

I've seen the guide to getting the blower motor out, but how do I get the controller out please?

I've gone as far as removing the glovebox and able to view the blower motor plug and I assume the controller above it??

TIA :y

Follow cables from motor, that will lead to speed controller, which is installed in the ducting

Post by: dbug on 20 January 2014, 00:56:15
Hedgehog is top right of blower motor as you look at it.  Its just clipped in - careful not to break the plastic lugs though (not an issue if its nackered ;)) - replacement just clips in :y
Title: Re: Blower stopped working?

Dont break off the plastic clips in the ducting  when removing hedgehog, as I did, or you are lost.I would eliminate everything else befor taking out hedgehog.

I'm following advice from RobG and removing the hedgehog to bridge the 2 large connectors to see if the blower spins.

Having a bloody nightmare with this bloody thing.  >:(

Just been out to the car again for 2mins (Skiving out of the office) and had another look in the foot well.

Pulled a plug off the back of the hedgehog which then runs down a short distance to the motor, although there appears to be another small plug going into the hedgehog?

Do I apply 12v to the red wire on the large block I have just pulled out of the hedgehog?  ???

Finally made some progress, yep the light bulb finally came on ;D ;D

After unplugging the 2 blade wires, brown & red off the controller, I used a set of jump leads from the battery to the leads. As soon as I connected them the blower kicked in at high speed.

That then identifies that the controller is kaput. Going to see if I can remove the current controller ready for a replacement  ::)

Thanks all for your guidance and patience so far guys n girls :y

Carefully, or you`ll snap one or both of the retaining clips

Rob, the retaining clips, do they push apart from the controller or do you push inwards and withdraw?

I've only removed the glovebox and nothing else so far, as didn't want to strip the airbag and wiring out unless I needed to, so it's a bit tight to see how it is clipped in. :-X

Are the hedgehogs all the same part No.?

Its a relatively simple solid state speed controller.

Ok, now I'm really hacked off  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

My replacement hedgehog unit arrived yesterday evening, happy days, or so I thought ???

Went out this morning and plugged the hedgehog in, turned the ignition on, turned the blowers on........NOTHING. Still dead  >:(

Now I originally checked all the fuses mentioned previously - all fine

Gave the blower motor direct power - Spins fine.

Could this be an issue with the CC unit?

Just curious...... I've only connected the hedgehog loose in the footwell. It doesn't have to be in its proper location to "work" does it?
Title: Re: Blower stopped working?
Post by: al brown on 26 January 2014, 13:11:45
I am assuming that facelift wiring is the same as pfl, but when mine failed it was the loom between the hedgehog and fan. On my car the wires come out of the hedgehog and into a plug, then from that plug to the fan, it was that plug in the middle that had a duff connection. I ended up making a new loom.

Howdy all, The hedgehog was as new and came from my previous Mig and had been fitted very recently as part of a major and expensive heating overhaul to solve the same problem Dave is having. Had a chat with Dave and am more than happy to refund should it turn out to have died in the post but is there anything else in the heating system this could be chaps, feeling a bit grim as a fellow OOfer is in need of his blowers ???
Title: Re: Blower stopped working?
Post by: TheBoy on 26 January 2014, 13:26:14
The system works by the CC unit giving a variable voltage signal to the fan controller, whose job is to convert that signal into a high current capable variable voltage to the fan (obviously, the CC isn't man enough to drive the fan directly).

So, assuming CC has been reset, either CC not giving signal, signal not getting from CC to fan controller, fan controller fault, power not getting from fan controller to fan, or fan faulty.

Some of these have already been checked - fan, speed controller etc.

If you've recently had the HU out, might be worth checking the plugs and wiring going to back of CC unit.

Cheers for the chat earlier Jon and thank you for your offer or a refund, but as I said to you, before I even look down that route, I want to make sure it's nothing else that may be causing this issue!!

I'll take a look at the loom between the hedgehog and blower next as just been suggested by al brown :y

Sorry Rob! That means nothing to me :-[ :-[

I've just been out and had another look. With the hedgehog in the footwell all connected...nothing.

Running a live feed from the battery to the red blade wire on the hedgehog, the bower kicks in.
I take it that means the hedgehog is fine??

F@&king car.

Just about had a guts full today, along with the bloody rain >:( >:( >:(

With the hedgehog connected via a direct feed from the battery, the blowers all work with variable speed etc.

I've pulled all the centre console all out and all wires look ok. Plugging just the cc unit in and tapping off a glovebox live feed direct to the hedgehog, it all works still.

That'll do for now, at least I'll have blowers on the windscreen in the morning. Put the radio cage back in along with the black plastic housing surrounding it, plugged the cc unit back in and guess what....... It's stopped bloody working again >:(

FFS, what is it with this bloody car ???

True I guess TB, just bloody frustrating :(

If I feed the hedgehog from another source if I can't find the break in the current feed, will that be ok.... Electrically wise?

Hedgehog is fed from F33 (nothing else is), so check F33

I thought you said all fuses were OK though. But double check this one, if only to make an old man like me happy.

I did check all fuses as per the start of my thread and they were all fine. I'll double check F33 again though. I did check and swop around 13,14 & 15 today just to make sure those were good but did forget the big boy F33.

Is there a chance it was blown already and is the source of your blower problems, or the old hedgehog was fubared and blew the fuse ?

No chance. I pulled all 3 big fuses including F33 and were fine. Looked today and F33 was slightly browned and quite a large gap where it had blown.

No chance it was missed, even by me, lol.

Pinched wire behind/above the radio then. Pull the entire cage assembly and check the wires closely :y

Might find that the extra wiring from the Parrot kit is taking up a bit too much space there :-\

I was never, ever that desperate. Though I did have a works provided Ital. Unsurprisingly it was an absolute heap of shite, until it blew away one day.
