....seem to travel at 56 MPH on the inside lane of the motorway?
My theory is that their owners are trying to replicate the manufacturers fuel consumption figures. ::) ::) ::)
They are doomed to fail. ;D

In the case of the Battlebus, that's flat out ;D
I was shocked when I first drove the Battlebus to MDTM's place, driving up the M1/A46 in a car that simply wouldn't go, having to overtake other cars driving so slow. Speed limits are the target to hit in clear weather.

Don't forget that the target limit is 60 on some motorway stretches, so everyone who is being overtaken by trucks and buses are doing an indicated 58-60, so are actually only doing 54-55... :-X

I was driving a 2.0Dti Zaffy A yesterday,it went very well although a little gruff when pushed on ::)

a high percentage of diesel owners here is for commercial use.. and they are so in a hurry that they can compete with F1 drivers..
and other private diesel owners also rarely go slow trusting their low fuel consumption.. so fuel economy already out the window .. ;D
-
that's the only possible reason for buying a diesel, surely - to try and eke oput every last possible drop of fuel irrespective of the pain it causes to you and all around

This one has a problem, as per the thread in General Car Chat. Maybe my expectations of a 100bhp diesel are too high, but this one ain't right. We've owned/leased a could of mid 1990s Rover 400s with Rovers 100bhp L series lump in, and they were great... ...although car undoubtedly lighter.

Exactly what is the battlebus, Mr TB? ??? ??? ???

A 1.7dti Zafira A with an alleged 100bhp and seven seats ;D
Probably in dark blue...

Ah, I see. So TB has given up on life then. ;D ;D :P :P

A touch harsh MrOpti ::)
The seven seats are as alleged as the power output, rather than a sudden requirement ;D

Or a 2.0DTi, with nearer 50bhp. Do they have 7 seats? That's as much use as a used johnny smeared in dogshit for me

Having just watched World war Z on'telly, I believe the world is infected by some more subtle Zombie virus designed to repress. Have you been to Asda recently? Sadly they don't avoid me like water round a rock though. :(

Not my TD!

Or mine. 2500 rpm is my usual cruising speed, and I have a high diff.

Funnily enough was thinking of diesel mpg on the motorway today, an inside lane cruise should see mid 50's easily. But since I started using the car for work, I've worked out that to get the same pence per mile using a diesel, I would have to average 48mpg to work.
It's around 25 miles, a mixture of motorway and heavy stop/start traffic. More stop/start than motorway cruise really, so even a modern diesel I think would struggle to do that.
-
about 36-38mpg from my 2.2Dti estate on an 8 mile trip to work each day, but soon to be a lot less than that as the 3.2V6 is coming home :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :y
-
Funnily enough I have a turbo diesel (2.0 Hdi Peugeot) Can't fault it really.
I have two speeds.
Driving Miss Daisy and flat out .
The latter is a bit scary. :o :o They are just raising the speed limit to 130 (about 80 mph)on our motorways.
The former is just going with the flow. You would just get road rage if you didn't . When we have visitors from the Uk , without exception they get apoplectic stuck behind folk doing 20 on open roads.......

My diesel has one speed. Flat out. Which equals Miss Diasy speeds. Even tunnie would think about overtaking me

The magic figure.... ;) ;) I tend to keep to this in the Jeep, gives a cruising speed for around an indicated 75 MPG and leaves another 2000 more rpm if needed............. :y :y

That's pretty crap isn't it for a modern TD? :-\ What are the advertised MPG figures? ???
-
Pass ;D
35 was what I expected and budgeted on, so a piece of paper saying it will do 59mpg on a rolling road in a laboratory with 100psi tyre pressure is, by and large, irrelevant ::)
The real kicker is the 60 litre tank, as it make the range seem pretty pathetic :-\

Got the first brim to brim figures from the Battlebus (I can't find right config for the GID ;D), and can beat your Insignia... ...by 0.2mpg, 35.66mpg
200 miles of that tank was a 75mph jaunt up the M1, so was expecting better, though 100 miles was ragging it around the hills on North York Moors.
Lower than I was expecting, but then it has got something fundamentally wrong with it.

So...have you ever thought of buying a 'newish' car, say three years old, that doesn't break down all the time? You'd get a decent mpg then. Just a thought.
-
MotherT's new diesel is averaging 50+ ::)
I still find it staggering that some get mid 30's from 4 pot diesel, a JagXJ diesel will average mid 30's
-
My wife's 1.6 petrol gets 38, my 1.8 gets 28 and I only do town driving.
-
My next car will likely average about 32-33 mpg, but I will be able to get Stemo, a roll of carpet and a shovel in the boot without blinking ;D

You'll never learn will you. Why buy a newer car and lob away 15k in depreciation, when you can fix something older, hopefully ;D

Because you should not have to fix every couple of hundred miles ;D

Can it 'dangle berries'! Not driven properly. Mid 20s.
The battlebus engine, GM's 2.0DTi from the late 90s, wasn't a particularly great engine when launched, but any 2l diesel from that era will be 100bhp, and realistic 40mpg. The common rails that followed around 10years ago managed much better power and economy.
The exception from the mid 90s was the VAG 1.9, a very good engine in its day for power and economy, and can still hold its own today (unlike its rather poor replacement)
-
Same can be said of the Peugeot lumps too, although the 1.9 wasn't particularly refined iirc :-\

Pretty reliable, especially given the 'french' influence, very economical too given their low tech nature :y

Yup, and the early XJ's had a 2.7 lump I think, later on a 3.0.
Given Josh's 4.2 V8 XJ did better mpg than my 3.2 Omega, not hard to see diesel XJ getting mid 30's :)

Josh's 4.2 XJ would manage mid teens at best, driven properly. Probably an easy 30mpg on a nice sedate motorway cruise, matching a 3.2
In the same way, I can achieve (on petrol) low to mid 30s from a 3.0l auto Omega. Normally, its nearer low 20s (on petrol).
-
To put this debate into perspective, the current and previous XJ are both Aluminium, not steel, so are a fair bit lighter ::)
The diesel V6 is great, right upto the point where you remember it's French ;D
Also, regardless of claimed mpg figures, real world economy is generally 20% lower :y

Not what the MID said in his 4.2 V8 :P
