I love my Jeep, but daily MPG is becoming very expensive, so I need to look to a replacement.... :( :( :(
Now members on here are quick to criticize members purchases, non Omega, so what do you suggest?
My commute is 12 miles, each way, on good A roads, work means driving around town mostly.
£10k ish, would prefer to pay money rather than borrow, budget and Auto are a starting point, auto is absolutely fixed.
Looking for good MPG and easy access, 'sit up and beg' style suits me, struggle with anything low, also need 4 doors and big boot, show me something better that a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, had one for over 3 years and loved it...................
-
Gas the jeep.

Gas the jeep.
It's diesel........... :(
-
What sort of MPG figures would you need? What does the Jeep do now?
-
Buy a gassed Jeep! :)

Looking for 40 prefer 50 MPG, and don't want to gas anything, cant be doing to many filling station runs..............

Ah. Serves you right. ;D
Buy a v8 jeep and gas that.
There's one fills up at my local lpg station. Fools me EVERY time whin it starts up. VROOOM... OOH what's that... oh its a jeep. ::)

That's exactly the same as I have but will not do much better than 30 MPG equivilent on gas, a little more that I get with a diesel engine..... :(

They do sound lovely, but that is not part of my criteria, need practical and that usually means boring............ :(

But lpg is cheaper, for the equivalent ish, mpg. No?
-
Tiguan or Touareg?
-
Yes are we talking Chelsea tractor as a requirement?

Do you have a preference for a 4x4 or MPV?
The Volvo XC90 D5 would probably be my choice for a 4x4. Real world MPG is likely to be mid 30's though, but better than most competitors.
If it were a MPV, I would look for a Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCI. They hold their value well. I always avoid French cars out of warranty. I have never had a problem free one, even 2010/11 one's. A £10k french car will very quickly loose money. A Volvo or Ford would be a better financial bet.
Or, how about the AWD estate variants with slightly higher ride height? Audi A6 all road, Volvo XC70 etc?
If you want me to keep an eye out for things in my travels...just let me know!

No, but do prefer the sit up and beg position, dont need 4x4 or high speed, but would like 'nippy' around town, as I said think Citroen C4 Grand Picasso as a starting point, VX Mummybus a possibility....... :-\ :-\

Problem with Volvo is the headlight washer dulls the plastic headlights and the are £400 each to replace, and apparently there is something about the tyres that makes them very expensive......... :( :(

Tiguan or Touareg?
Now we're motoring talking! :y :y :y :y :y

A manual-boxed Omega TD; Vamps ... ? :y
33mpg round the houses and around 44mpg cruising ;)

Can't find a 2.2, 2.0 only 34.9 MPG looking for much more, otherwise have to balance the cost of purchase against the Jeeps current consumption.............. :-\ :-\

I'd agree with Josh & steer clear of owt French ;) (says he with a C3on the drive :-X) I used to consistently get 47/48 off my crappy Astra 1700 TD on my 22/23 mile commute, though I'd to put up with 3 pedals. I'd go with the suggestion of a diseasal Zafira :y

My daughter has recently got rid of her Zafira as she had too many Omega style reliability problems with it and had, had enough. She has replaced it with one of these and finds it a much better more refined car. IMO worth adding to your list as it ticks most of the boxes: 4x4, automatic, over 40mpg, upright driving position and reasonable sized boot if you get the 4 seater and under £10k, plus plenty to choose from where it has been a good seller in the UK.

:-\
They do a 4x4 version called the Freetrack, same interior but bigger boot, same applies to the Altea XL but minus 4x4 :y
-
Was going to suggest diesel auto Orlando but only 4 sub-10K on the trader and all down sarf.
-
12 miles, really? :o :o ??? :-\ - Cycle it :D
Firstly you do not want a diesel, it would barely reach full temp by the time you get there. The DPF would easily get blocked, you want a petrol for around town only use :)
Any change in car is likely going to cost you a 4 figure sum, but lets be super generous here and say it costs you £750 in total to switch. Thats insurance, other paperwork, loss in depreciation from purchase, cost of new car ect. So a long shot :y
Lets say your cost per mile really went down. Quick Google suggest 22mpg from 2.7d Jeep? Think yours is that? Not sure what you really get...
30 mpg in a petrol are is ~ 19.34p a mile.
30 mpg in a diesel is ~ 20.42p a mile.
22 mpg in a diesel is ~ 0.27p mile.
Lets say you got a little Fiat 500 Twin Air thing, they "say" 70mpg, but lets be realistic and say 45mpg nocking around town. Or even 50mpg. 50mpg in a petrol (long shot!) is around 11.69p a mile, (almost same PPM as my 2.2 LPG) so about as cheap as you can get, with diesel being more at the pump.
0.27ppm (Jeep) minus 0.11p (twin air) = 0.16ppm mile saving.
So best you can save, really is 0.16p a mile, (which again is a huge saving in reality) take that £750 back in... you need to do 4,687 miles to get back just £750. Costs you £1.5k to switch? Around 10k miles! Not a problem when you do big miles, but not your kind of commute :y
Based on a 12 mile commute & around 253 working days in year (excluding your holidays) you are looking at around 18 months to pay back a £750 outlay in a different car. 3 years or so, for £1.5k cost to switch.
It's worth considering that the cost at the pump, although is the most 'visible' cost, there are many others :y :y
-
I was under the impression that it was needed whilst at work, not just the commute :-\ therefore probably a requirement to have four doors, and probably a condition of mileage payments that it be diesel :-\
Fiat 500/Ford Ka is neither four door, practical or comfortable ::)

That does change things, however if it's still 12 miles, stop. Office/check ect, go out again lots of short runs, I'd still say petrol.
Unless the milage is vastly more than stated, it's a long time on payback.
Also, far as I've read here, the Jeep has been reliable too?
-
Totally random but alfa romeo diesels give very good mpg 45-60 mpg even from the 2.4 jtd :y
-
Diesel and Auto box is a dodgy combination from the start. You have to be very careful what you choose as that combination will bring up so many dogs with unreliable auto boxes designed for petrol power bolted together with a diseasel motor to fill a gap in the brochure.
I'd have thought a modern diesel would be pretty unsuited to that driving regime - just a short commute and lots of short trips round town is a recipe for DPF issues. I would be going for a small auto petrol car (i.e. Astra/Zafira?), or a larger petrol car LPG converted to fit those requirements.
EDIT: and I'd sooner walk than drive a shitroen. ;D

No, its French. Obviously.
No, its front wheel drive which gives no room for an auto box without splitting the drive line
No, its auto in conjunction with front wheel drive
No, its Diesel in conjunction with a front wheel drive auto gives all low down torque. The enemy of an auto, in a front wheel drive with a split drive line to fit the box between the front wheels with the engine in the way.
No, did I mention, its French, front wheel drive auto and diesel. You can not get a worse combination for drive train reliability.
Only saving grace is it can't pull the skin off a bowl of custard rice pudding.
If it must be diesel and auto, get rwd.
If it must be front wheel drive and auto, get a petrol.
Never all three.
Diesels are expensive to repair as the miles build up. That's had the best out of it by now and the owner might be selling for reasons given above.
What else... Oh yes, did I mention, its French, its fwd auto and diesel.

Don't laugh, I know I've got a Skoda, but have you thought of somat like this? Boot is huge, good seating position. Dunno about the engine though never driven one, maybe a little on the small side :-\ :-\ :-\

That's a relatively expensive verion of the Altea/cheaper version of the VW Tiguan :y
I should add, although I had dealer issues with the Altea, the old dears loved it as they could get in and out without struggling as the seats are a little higher. The boot on the XL is a good size too...
There's also that Daewoo Orlando ::)

Thanks for the comments peeps, not even thought about some of the suggestions....... ;) :D
I have been running diesel Autos since 2007 and never had a problem, my car get up to full speed and temperature on my commute, remember this is a ‘Northern’ mostly 70 MPH commute on good fast roads........... :y :y
Citoren C4 Grand and Peugeot 3008 are both firm contenders, loved my Citroen possible my 3rd best all time car modern car, only beaten by a 2.7 auto Gallant and a 2.7 Auto Rover.
Seat Altea – Not a car I was aware of, worth consideration, auto diesel, sadly nothing close by.
VW Tiguan – Not aware, only Petrol auto, not good enough on fuel
VW Touareg – fuel same as the Jeep
Ford Galaxy – May be worthy of further consideration, sure I read, there was a problem with Ford auto boxes around 08 /09? I did got to a Ford / Nissan dealer today, Evans Halshaw in Darlington, shocking access could not find anywhere to park, turned around and drove out, won’t be buying anything from there............ >:( >:(
Nissan X-Train – Possibly worthy of further consideration, not as good on fuel as I hope for and a 4x4, Sister in Law has got into the habit of borrowing the Jeep at weekends to tow a horse box, got beyond a joke now really – have offered them the opportunity to purchase said Jeep though........ :D :D
Vx Zafira – Worth looking at further..........
Chevvy Orlando – Ticks all the boxes and is not French........
Toyota Verso – worthy of further consideration, not so good with fuel though.
I am with Andy B and wonder what is available that is RWD, Auto and does 40 MPG +......... ;) ;)
The Skoda Yeti looks fab, have looked at those before; not sure how robust these little high revving engineers will be in the long term. Other problem is it is only a 1.2, I need to add another requirement, Must be 1.6L or over maximum mileage reimbursement then.......... :y
No BMW’s or anything too ostentatious, as used for work........ :-X :-X
-
Shame wrt your last sentence :-\ brothers 330d auto is in the same tax bracket as my 2.0 grot box, and does over 40mpg on his commute, and will keep my 3.2 honest ::)
Jag XFs are starting to be more available too... plod ones start at £8k... :y
-
plod ones start at £8k...
Oh if only ::) :'( :'( :'(
We'll never see em :'( :'( :'(
-
Went to BCA in Brum just before Christmas, two in the sale, one metallic red unmarked and tidy, was about £9k; tother, a silver marked car was a bit scruffy, but still fetched £8k, both 3.0twin turbo diesels autos iirc...
Had one been white ::)
-
Must be 1.6L or over maximum mileage reimbursement then
They do a 1.8 petrol but can't find one under £10k
Think I said once before, we had the XF's on test but the misers said they were too expensive >:( >:( >:( Bobbies loved em & said they were the quickest diesel they've driven & handled very well.
Wonder what the BM repair bill is standing at :o :o :o ::) ::) ::)

My 1.9 tdi manual did 135k miles in two years without actually blowing up, inspite of me driving it ::)
Point is they're cheap as chips, and not that bad (for a good looking Golf), prices range from £1850 upto about £12k for a nearly new one, and have a good spread of engines/gearboxes :y

No one has mentioned the Meriva, is there a reason for that...?
Yeah its a Vauxhall ::) ;D Only joking , didnt they use the fiat engine in that :-\

Looking at the list of contenders, you are going to do some serious miles to pay back any MPG advantage. :-\
-
The Meriva doesn't have a proper auto box, only a cvt one, so potential for some serious failings :-\

Why not consider one of these?

I got the Superb 2.5tdi Auto, and so far so good. Done over 20k since I bought it and I'm well pleased. Mine is the elegance and is top of the range with leather seats, electric everything, heated front & rear seats. For me the DSG autobox is not that bad, if a bit lazy and I've read the supposed horror stories about when they go wrong but it is usually lack of maintenance i.e. not changing fluid / filter. One of these supposed sealed for life units which on the label says service at 60k. Usual signs are they start to slip in reverse and then go bang. Lots of guys on the Skoda forum who like you guys 'look after' their cars properly and don't believe what dumb manufacturers say, service the boxes when they are due and they've lasted well, some north of 200k.
I currently get about 42mpg on the 40 mile run to work, and I must say its very comfortable. Dealer servicing is excellent too & free courtesy cars in the bargin.

Erm..........No! ::)

Looking at the list of contenders, you are going to do some serious miles to pay back any MPG advantage. :-\
I've been looking for 'the point' all day, and it transpires you had it all along :D :y
My 2p...
If you want a new car, and it makes you happy, do it; you only live once :) ...but don't fool yourself into believing that it'll save you cheese. It likely won't unless you vastly reduce your standards. :(
If anyone wants an XF I can arrange a discount for OOF peeps :P... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231196619479
