MV failed the mot on 1 thing x 2 :'(
Rear subframe bushes have excessive movement :(
Garage wanted to know how long to do them and if any special tools needed , said i didnt know ... Is this an easy job and how long would be expected to complete :-\
Ok guide says 1 hour , competent garage should have no problem doing this then :-\
He has just rang and said i will allow 2 hrs to do both sides :(
-
you gone do them yourself Emd
-
you gone do them yourself emd
No mate i cant do that its too much for me to do and looks like a pig of a job if they wont budge :(
On the + side the car was fantastic to drive again after 8 months :) Full ticket on thursday , not bad for a 17 year old car :y

If they're bad enough to fail the mot then they're probably completely separated. Which makes things more awkward, ESP if you've not done them before.
...and it must have been appalling to drive? :o

Not at all but ive never pushed the car to any extremes , not as bad as my old elite that had a good set on ;D I should notice a difference once the new ones are on then ? Didn't fancy rolling around on the floor fighting getting them out and in so left it to the garage to fight them ;D

Suspect you'll notice no difference at all.

How do they check for these subframe bushes for excessive wear :-\ Getting concerned i may be getting ripped off as there was no handling issues at all , no squeaks bangs or knocks :(
-
Take it to a different garage and ask them to check them :y
-

Hm cant do that martin as the car is not taxed yet till i get the mot , one thing for sure is ill be checking to see if they have actually changed them :y
I think the bloke was a bit wary when i said i know where the subfame bushes are situated and how they are removed when i later spoke to him , he said oh did you google it ::)
At least the handbrake passed with flying colours :D And after the car had been sitting for 8 months its flew through the emissions :D

Given the age of the car, its likely that those bushes would be a) original, b) shagged to hell (either torn, or as Dr Gixer implies, separated, or most likely, both)
-

Aye ;) So exaggerated the car would have been going round a corner sideways like a crab if pushed :-\

Its difficult to notice until you've driven a tight one. But the sensation is along the lines of a tendency/feeling to oversteer, yet it doesn't, if that makes sense.
Obviously, the harder pushed, the more pronounced the effect.

Yeah i think :-\ Im sure ill notice when its been done on thursday , they had the cheek to advise on rusty brake discs even though i told them its been off the road for 8 months ::) I tried my hardest to brake test it off ;D

How much are they going to sting you for, Mr Emd?.... :-\ :-\
I'm sure that nice Mr STMO will pay if you're short of a bob or two. He's loaded. :y :)

Send me the whole bill. I doubt they'd dare charge you more than the £50 that the car is worth.

If the bushes have failed enough for an mot man to notice, the car will have been steering from the back for some time, causing numerous corrections at the steering wheel.
Speed or how hard it's pushed will not be the issue.
If it's gone unnoticed by the driver, then likely the rear sensations are matched by the front giving a boat like feel to the car when driving in a straight line at 30mph. Failed rear bushes alone give an awful feeling of disconnection from the rear wheels. Unless the fronts are failed as well. Then if the driver accepts that's how the car is normally, it will go unnoticed for years until something falls off, or mot time.

I can agree with that - having driven mine properly since you fitted the poly rear donuts for me it's now very noticeable that the car is only 'half' boat-like (the front end) rather than completely boat like..
-
I find a fault with one end doesn't add up to half the problem fixed. Oddly.
So you've still got 2/3rds boat there ;D
-
;D
I prefer Land Yacht, really..

None of that and thats why im suspecting they are trying it on :( The old elite use to wander boat like so i know what you mean , having had this mv i noticed how sure footed and positive it was compared to the old boat elite . Lets see what if any change it has made IF they do actually change them :-\

You'll have them by the balls if they charge for work they haven't done. :y

I'll hand them the swear box when i drop the car off ;D If it takes more than an hour labour ill refuse to pay and of course inspect any work they did ::)
-
To be clear, did they mean the subframe donuts or the rear mounts :-\
If it's the rear mounts, it will be interesting to see how they replace them as they're made from Grade 1 unobtainium, and I would go as far as to say that they failed because some idiot jacked it by the diff for the test... especially given that the car feels tight to drive :-\

Idiot is not the word I typed btw...

Nah, I bet you typed idiot, as I got censored on that word earlier

Rhymes with Pat :y (as opposed to runt, which btw, is equally appropriate it they did jack it by the diff >:()

Yep subframe donuts marked on the sheet :y
Never jacked the up by the diff myself but dont know if they did or not , car felt no different on the way home :y

Equally, if they charge more than £100 for parts, then you're better off fitting the Monaro bushes from Monkfish as they're £99+ postage :y
You're better off fitting them anyways, but that's a different conversation :y (the Monaro polys would also halve the labour rate as the tricky bit is digging the old bushes out, so don't discount them purely on parts cost... the total job price might be the same with a better result)

It wont be more than that al ;) But of course a 12 month warranty should be included , before i leave i will ask them to save the old bushes for me to inspect :y

I doubt they are trying it on. Those bushes are over 15 years old and can be a pig to change. They'd pick an easy job if they where taking the pesh.
Mv6 boat is a whole world apart from Elite boat btw. Elite boat is still boat with everything new. ;D
-
All work done now and full mot :) Sometimes a pig of a job like that is left for someone else to sweat over :) Bloke in the garage commented on how great the condition of the car is considering its almost 17 years old :y

I think that link is desperately inaccurate, possibly due to exactly how cars a re registered. I know when I last looked at it, it said x for a specific car, and I personally knew of more than x
