I'm clearly not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to buying 'interesting cars'.......Just look at the money I lost when I sold my CLS 500 after just three short months of ownership.
Well, it looks like another automotive F**k up could be just around the corner. I really shouldn't be allowed out without an appropriate adult.
This particular money pit was manufactured in 1992 and wears a 'J' plate. Not a fast car, a decent 2.5/2.6 Omega would waste it in a straight line.
Perhaps I'll see sense. More likely I won't.

What car isit??

What car isit??
Just about the most unreliable and badly made car ever built. I must be certifiable to even entertain the notion.
-
I'm not sure I would consider Stemo to be an appropriate adult :-\ Quite the opposite in fact ;D
Joking aside, you might want to rebuild the house first ::)

I have decided not to rebuild/replace the conservatory. This means I have a little spare cash to irresponsibly squander.

Nope. Not as well screwed together as an Alfa......or as reliable.

Fair enough.. but a Maestro :o

A jaguar?? Just my opinion ;D
'Friad not'.....an old Jag would be far more sensible.

British Leyland produced world beaters such as the magnificent Morris Marina and equally desirable Austin All-Aggro. However, the money pit I'm considering is not a BL product.

I make a good living advising the rich and famous from our Spanish ruin.
Do you want to go on my books?
I could hook you up with some stunning models(of cars). Got a VW Corrado - now there is a classic in the making. It would look good in your West Wing Stables. :y :y :y
-
Give us a clue ............. ;) ;)
Okay then....a none too subtle clue.
Solvent abusers will love this car.

Renault Chamade...

Porsche 924/944/Boxster. :)
We had a test drive in the lowly 2.7 version some time back. A car with soul. :y
But no.......unreliable and badly made are key here......along with the solvent link.
-
Fibreglass body then, so It's a reliant...easy!
Scimitar GTE?
-
Renault Chamade...
It gets worse......fooking hell, Al. £4000 for that.
-
Oh dear, it's a TVR :-\
How many do you get?
-
Fibreglass body then, so It's a reliant...easy!
Scimitar GTE?
At last.
Not a Scimitar though. Princess Anne owned one of these you know. ;D

Finally.......But not a proper TVR, Al. :y :y :y :y :y :y
An S3 with the weedy 2.9 V6.
-

I could fall out with you, Lizzie. :-* :-* :-*
-
I was going to say TVR, but a quick scan of ebay showed none available for £4000..... :-\
Yes you've lost the plot! ;D Get a Boxster if you must have a glorified hairdressers car! :y

You're searching wrong Sir Tig... two TVRs with a combined price of £4k... one working and one less so... :y
-
What specifically should I be on the lookout for.
Who will be the first to say 'everything'..... ;D
-
Noisy timing chain, rocker gasket leaks, gearbox and diff whine.
Crazed or cracked paint, evidence of blistering in the paint work (sign of osmosis and really not good), poorer panel alignment than you might reasonably expect from a hand built anything.
Electrics and evidence of water leaks.
So all in all, everything ::)
-
I was watching an old episode of Wheeler Dealers the other day and they bought a TVR for £8000, a Cerbera I think. :-\
Anyway lovely looking car until they put up on the ramps and found that the chassis was totally rotten.... :o They had to have a new chassis built by a TVR specialist which if I remember rightly was over £2500! :o ;D So hope it's got a new MOT! ;D
-
But thinking about it, you'll only be keeping it for 5 minutes so as long as it looks nice, I wouldn't worry too much! ;D
-
No MOT......so chassis and outriggers may need replacing. I believe the anaemic 2.9 litre lump has gear driven cams......or is that the 2.8?

Chain driven, but variation on a theme... 12v pushrod lump :y

If it's good enough for the Chevvy V8 it should be good enough for the Cologne lump ;D

The old 3 litre 'Essex lump' was far superior in my opinion. At least it had a decent dollop of low end torque.....bit breathless at higher revs though.
-
Zakspeed twin turbo Capri? Anyone? 8)

and a picture of this car?

As is the Cologne, IMHO. Neither engine has anything to give above 5,000 RPM, which is a bit of a shock if you expect it to just keep pulling like the GM V6 does.. Still, in a TVR it should be quite "adequate". ;)
Watch that chassis, though. If the spaceframe has rotted, you have a whole world of grief ahead.

Finally.......But not a proper TVR, Al. :y :y :y :y :y :y
An S3 with the weedy 2.9 V6.
Waste of time bothering with that then.
A TVR's strong points are its raw power and handling.
Given that boat anchor you will get neither! :y

Kevin.....If possible I'm hoping to see the car today. As far as I'm aware the chassis and outriggers are the originals from 1992. It is also white, a colour I'm not too fond of.

Is that a 280 Tasmin from the eighties?

I should add, or rather should I, that I used to deliver repair panels to the TVR service centre in Redhill... :-\
Not pretty :-X

It certainly won't be quick, Mark. I believe the 2.9 has only 170 BHP. My 2.6 Omega has 178/180 depending on which publication you read.
Only weighs about 960 KG though.
-
Hmm. I'd get someone who knows about them to look at it, personally. A mate of mine had a Tasmin 390 (so with an engine that made it worthwhile!) which had rot in the chassis and he was VERY lucky that he managed to get it rectified without a complete rebuild. As it is, he had to search for a while before he found a welder who was prepared to weld close enough to the fuel tank to avoid dismanthing the whole car.
If that's what you're looking at, just but a kit car starter kit instead, as that's what you'll effectively get, without the frustration of having to take it all apart first, before you can build it. ;)
But, to summarise:
Engine: Crap
Colour: Crap (not to your taste)
Condition: Very potentially crap, but we'll see
Remind me why you're buying this? ;)
-
Clearly because he can ;D
As for what to look for, this should help... note especially rot at every weld :y

Yes but with 250kg of it at the front in the form of an engine much more suited to grumbly torque delivery for heavy cars.
Even the Rover V8 was considerably lighter. (and the right noise).
Unless you are able to do work on it yourself, run away

I'm a cretin. ;D
Just looking at the moment because the car is only a few miles from me. I keep hearing the Dr Pepper tune in my head........" What's the worst that can happen" ::) ::) ::)

Well, as you asked...
This, at the very least... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoR2qr0d3Gc&feature=youtube_gdata_player) ;D

I refer the OP to Al's picture, with a reminder that that's a much more recent TVR. ;)
If you're going to buy a rotten TVR, make it a AJP8 engined Cerbera, so the smile when you've sunk most of your savings into restoring it, is worthwhile. :y
-
Now you see I would gladly buy one in that nick at the right price......but I know I can fix it.
-
Yeah, that Cerb chassis looks barely rusty.. in comparison to how they can be! Strip down, blast/dip, repair, recoat, reassemble.. job jobbed :y
-
Plus tubular stuff is easy to repair

Ignoring the daylight you can see through the off side front chassis rail and lower offside front wishbone :D

You will find this will be very helpful for the tvr :D

I'm going to see it at two this afternoon.
I'll take my camera and see if I can get a few pictures.
I'm only taking £150 for a deposit....so not too much to lose should my usual stupidity overwhelms common sense.

Yes you should dig out that Wheeler Dealer episode where they had the TVR, as it will give you an idea of what might be involved. I think they spent about £4000 on top of the purchase price and that (as ever) didn't take account of Ed China's time and labour! ::) ;)
-
Not impressed with Ed China at times.....he talks crap......particularly 'performance tuning part bolt on Bob' crap.

That goes for most car programmes, really.. so much bollards is spoken it's unfunny at times.
Still, it's entertainment and gives me hope that maybe one day I could escape IT and rebuild cars for a living ;)
-

Yeah, he's clearly in the pay of the snake oil merchants at times.
Oh, and I offered him a jump start once when he was having trouble starting his garden shed and he didn't come across as desperately grateful. :(
