Title: If I were looking for a big old car
Post by: The Sheriff on 03 January 2015, 11:21:22
This is the kind of thing I'd be looking at:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-MERCEDES-E320-CDI-AVANTGARDE-AUTO-SILVER-/291338131466?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43d51b180a

If it was petrol and less miles, be a steal.

It's a bit more than the average OOFer's 99p budget though.  :-\

No mention of rust though :-\ That model E Class has either had the rust dealt with or it's cheerfully rusting away, but no mention either way :-\

It's cheap enough not to worry, though. If you got two years out of it.........

I think you've missed the point of these type of threads Uncle STMO.  :-\

The point is to find a reasonable old car on ebay/Autotrader at a good price and we then proceed to pick it to bits and find every little fault or potential fault.  It's even OK to complain about mileage. Low or high it dosn't matter.   HTH!  ;)  :)

That's at a very dangerous mileage for gearbox and injector problems, both of which would realistically kill it. As would the rot that causes the front suspension to collapse, although it would probably have done that by now.

Just like Omegas, they're best considered as beaters so that one is way too expensive.

I don't like them very much, and the odd seating position rule them out for me.

I would really like to buy that and run it, hassle free, for ten years just to prove you wrong. But I can't, most of you will be dead by then.

Sorry but I disagree....that's low mileage for a 3.2 lump of that era, if properly maintained that merc will see 300k easily  :y

IF properly maintained. The engine will probably be OK, but gearboxes do fail(sealed for life, and if the fluid hasn't been changed isn't worth risking now) and the injectors are a real problem both to remove and to keep the replacements in. If you look at one, remove the engine cover, and if you see black sludge around the injectors, you don't want it!
