CCR2006? Yes it can. The process involves intercepting some of the wiring within the head unit, and running the feeds and returns to a switch (so you can select CD player or MP3 Player) and then connecting a line level device to the selector switch - in my case the little panel mount MP3 player.

You have to work out how your going to route the cable and what power source and device you want to use. I wanted to have something that could be hidden away easily without having to detach cables etc so this device fitted the bill, I just shut the ashtray! The ashtray has the benefit of having a readily available power source! All connections I made are soldered and a fuse was also incorporated in the power feed, the ashtray has seen some modifications in order to accommodate the install.

So the mp3 player feeds 3 wires L. R and a common -   And you have powered it from the 12v cig lighter and dropped the voltage..

Correct, but you'll also need to return the signals back via a switch if you want to keep the CD Changer working. MP3 device i'm using is happy with 5v - 14v without issue but I have put a fuse in circuit.

I can't pronounce it  ;D

But suffice to say it's an incredibly cheap Chinese job off Ebay!

Does also have a remote control, FM tuner, Line in (for another device) and supports SD/MMC and USB memory sticks, of course if you want to shut the ashtray with the memory card still installed you'll need to use an RS-MMC card!

We likeses it, we do. Very precious .  :y

So the ash tray light comes on when ash tray open in normal operation, and it's switch has been used to switch between cd and the MP3? Ash tray open, MP3 on CD off. Ashtray closed CD on MP3 off....?

Often wondered about fitting a smart phone holder in there, but didn't want the ash tray open all the time, as I often sit with my left leg up/foot flat on the floor (auto box obviously) and the ash tray catches the side of my leg when open.

That's very neat, love anything that's not irreparably 'damaged' the car, very nice job  :)

Would look better installed into a PFL CDX V6, of course. I happen to have one up the drive if you fancy hooking that up to my SC804....  :y

Mr CG?

I pondered the idea of using the switch in that way but would need a little more work as it's only a single pole one way switch so would need to drive a relay or similar.

The illumination lamp has been removed as that's how I've routed the wires - you can't feed them out lower down as the mechanism would trap them and the unit wouldn't shut. If you utilise the +12v after the illumination switch, it will obviously power down the unit when you close the ashtray, I didn't want that to happen so used the ignition fed side so it turns on and off with the Head Unit.

Not seen one of those for a few years! Think it was in a Carlton CDX I had to use when the company realised my Cavalier SRi was on 158K and was only leased for 90K over three years!

Not sure the CCR2006 has the independent volume settings for this sort of thing?

Its pretty tried and tested on NCDx series over the past couple of years.

Be perfect for the taxi then seeing as how you can't smoke in it... ::)

Andy do you have any pics of the internal connections?

The best I have seen so far by a long shot.:y

Nice and tidy, I never thought of putting one in there. Ideal place really as I don't smoke and it's right in front where you want it.

I use my phone to play MP3's etc through my Kinetic Digitizor aux input and the phone sits in the cup holder space below the centre armrest. Its ok but the volume is a bit low. It is tidy though as you can't see its in there and of course I get the DAB.

I would also like some piccies or more detail on the HU connection if possible.

This looks awesome. I am also busy trying to get this kind of solution working (NCDC2013).
I am very curious how the 'switch' between MP3 and CDC is connected.
Could you elaborate on this (perhaps with a few pics)?

No seriously, that's a cracking job you have done there bud  :y :y :y

I'm looking at maybe turning my fag tray into a iPod dock then mounting a DAB display unit on the front face if I can find one which is slim / small enough not to look too out of place  :-\

I ordered the first one (same as VXL V6).
Will keep you posted.
Have to order a new soldering iron first... mine just died  >:(

I have an old cdc3 unit with the lid off. If i stick some piccies in the test zone, would that help highlight the connection points or are they in the other part of the unit?

(CD changer element seems pointless to me as you would just put all your tunes on the memory stick)

Thanks for all the great comments  :y

Ashtray seemed to be the tidiest solution to me, but there are plenty of options - I considered removing the R/H centre air vent at one point but as my phone is in a holder up there on a dashmount bracket it's a little awkward to access. Limiting factor of the ashtray is the depth / size but this module fits just fine.

As far as the modifications to the head unit, it is well documented on the Internet, Hardwarekiller's site amongst many others have the instructions, all very simple stuff, but the more difficult side to it is routing the cable sensibly and using a plug and socket arrangement (If you've got an NCDC/R you will need to take the unit out for a Nav Laser at some point!) to enable the head unit to be removed.

NCDC 2013 / 2015 are physically identical, it's only the presence of a Telematics on the CAN bus that makes a 2013 a 2015 (except a few legends on the Bezel). NCDR 1100 / 1500 are identical to each other in the same way but there's a slightly different method of interfacing as the CDC3 unit is a physically separate unit.

By the way, I take no responsibility for anyone who damages their unit trying to get it out of the car!

It's not factory fitted, it's a Bury kit on a Dashmount bracket connected to the telephone prewiring via an Autoleads 06-109B cable.

Post up a pic of the one installed in yours and might be able to tell you more.

I think the OP has missed a critical point with this install, beautiful though it is. Personally this wouldn't work on my car, because if my ashtray is permanently blocked, I would have no-where to store a 1pence piece, a screwed up petrol receipt and self-tapper screw which I've forgotten where it came from.

No internal storage, storage capacity dictated by your SD / RS-MMC or USB stick capacity up to a maximum of 32Gb I believe.

There is also facility to use a line in through the unit, so in theory you can utilise an Ipod or similar instead (using the base connector to gain the line level outputs).

Which one did you use?
I am a little hesitant using Hardware killer's solution (http://hardwarekiller.bplaced.net/lineout.htm), since it only uses the front speakers. Not the rears.
That is why I am interested in the used solution. I would like to use all speakers.
