As we're nearly in April, Newent needs sorting out. Traditionally, we go in the weekend between the August Bank Holiday and the Onion Fayre (although that's later this year), which this year would put us Fri 4th and Sat 5th.
It takes a fair bit of organising, and frankly, if there isn't sufficient interest, I won't bother. Numbers have been dropping over the past few years, for reasons of a dislike of camping/caravanning, age, cost or simply CBA.
So, if you're genuinely interested in coming, please vote. If not, don't vote. If you are only planning on day visiting, or will share a pitch with someone else, don't vote. This is purely to get an idea on number of pitches required, and to see if its worthwhile. Thanks.
If there is sufficient interest, I'll be looking at taking 50% deposits next month, with full balance by end of July. Until we know numbers, I cannot negotiate a price, but imagine it will be in the region of £20 per night.
-
I voted yes, but I may, I may, have a 3 month old puppy by then and going camping when their that old wouldn't be a good idea....so I'd have to pass. But will come if I don't :y
-
I'm off shift then so will be come if it's on. :y :y
Me, Molly & a caravan :y :y
-
I am unable to book holiday in September, but get my final roster later this week, so will vote or not once I have projected the dates forward...
-
I would be up for it, but 1st weekend in September is always a problem for me. :(
-
Two or four of us on one pitch as usual Jaime.

Chicks are welcome, and if no interest in what the blokes are doing during the day, tend to bugger off out for the day as a group - either Gloucester shopping, pub, cinema, or all of the above ;D
-
Who was the clever arse who voted "Don't VOTE for this option" ???

haha. Ahhh there in lies one of her best advantages. She can hold a conversation with almost anyone about cars. She's the sort of girl that when asked "What's you're favourite car" She answers "Shelby 427 Cobra, obviously. Not a replica fibreglass thing, though; a real Carroll Shelby one"... as opposed to "A red one. They're the fastest aren't they?"*
*This is wrong for two reasons
i Because a car colour does not automatically denote what car a vehicle is, the only exception that springs to mind being 'Imperial Green', ergo it must be a Lotus Carlton/Omega; and not it's speed, of course.
ii Because to answer 'red' is erroneous. Black ones are faster, as we all know :D
-
So only 5 people currently interested?
Is it worth it?
-
I'd let the poll run for longer, you started it in skool hols are some peeps are bound to be away....I bet Mr Entwood will go, but im guessing he's away in his pikey van at present as he hasn't posted on this thread....I guess the same for others :-\ Maybe give it another 10 days or so :y
-

For those of us who have never been, what is it?
Camping weekend fiddling with omegas?
-
More social, but that's the gist of it :y
-
I have our old trailer tent in the garage....but it has not been used for ten years at least. We are booked here in Wareham from the sixth, so theoretically we could do Newent, then come here. Love the social side of our meets. However, if it was windy, me and swmbo may end up looking at the stars. Swmbo in night gear is a sight worth beholding.
When we get back, I will assess the trailer tent...although thinking about it, my kids may have a tent.....
If it goes ahead TB, I may have to book private...but be assured...I will do my best.
-
I'm afraid just 5 "maybes" doesn't really warrant the time and effort that Mrs TB would have to put in to organise it.
I'll leave voting open for another few days, but if there is that little interest....
-
That's a bugger :( :(
-
At this present time all I can add is a sixth 'maybe' which really doesn't help much :'(
-
It will be a shame if this weekend doesn't happen...even tho im still not sure if I can attend..due to bro's bitch lab carnt make up her mind to produce some pups or not.... :-\
Its a shame the regulars like Entwood and AA for example haven't posted on this thread... :(
Tho reading between the lines/posts I can understand why some long standing members have gone quiet :( Shame :(
-
Im sure theres a fair few known attendee's havent voted....
I hope!
-
Two differant questions here imo.
Do you/I want to go camping? Personally, No! I opposing don't.
Do you/I want go to a car meet play cars talk bollards over meal and some beer...? Personally...To right. Let's go. :y
But then this is Newent and it's a camping gig.
-
As I said on Sunday... Work means I can't really commit yet, but if it fits then we would try to come
-
An alternative to camping :-\

Having a not dissimilar PM conversation with someone else, but in reality the costs are prohibitive.
The thing with camping is its relatively cheap (usually £15-£20 per night for the pitch, with bring your own cheap food and drink). And in the case of Newent, a very good site with an owner having no real issue with groups or working on cars.
But that doesn't mean it has to be camping/caravanning.
Even those impossible-to-find £19 a night Premier Inns would involve a £10 per head per meal food and £4 per drink drinks. Although I'm up for that of course, but would it would be expensive, esp for those bringing family along. Before getting into policies with dogs, yada yada yada.
Chrisgixer makes a valid point above - is the issue with the meet, the camping element, or something else. So lets throw that open for discussion. I know chrisgixer particularly hates camping, which I can fully understand, even if I don't necessarily agree with.
-
If it's a camping issue, then not much to do apart from it costing more :-\ In which case, would people be prepared to share accommodation ie a large gite/farmhouse or similar :-\
The lodge idea, whilst being relatively expensive does at least give people some privacy/independence, but would really require a provisional booking for 12-18 months time in order to get a block booking...
That said, if the cost is going to limit numbers, then is that acceptable and what possibilities does that offer? A week or so in French France or upto Scotland/avoiding school holidays or not :-\
-
Would people be prepared to travel that distance?
-
Would people be prepared to travel that distance?
We all travel a fair way for getting to various meets/curries etc, so if it is to be a bit longer/more expensive, then make the journey part of it, that way it's more of a bunch of mates and their cars sharing an adventure rather than merely spending a weekend camping in a field (all be it a very nice field) and possibly doing some car bits whilst there...
If that makes any sense at all :-\

Maybe a hardcore few. Not sure the majority do/would. Or even a sizable minority.
Not sure I'm overly in favour of travelling in convoy to a destination. Like biking groups, people will want to progress at different rates.
-
You don't have to travel in convoy, and equally it doesn't need to be a road rally, but if not camping, the accommodation needs to be carefully thought out.
That said if it's only a minority who are prepared to attend the weekend meets, presumably there are even fewer people who would give up their holiday time to participate in a bit of a road trip :-\
-
Tricky one. As we know Daz searched high and low for a venue that would allow Caravans, camping AND car work. The Newent site seems quite unique to me in that it allows the amount of noise, late night din, and car work in one place.
The only thing missing is Statics of The lakes Venue, or some other sort of solid structure you don't have to build on arrival, shiver all night and fail to sleep in while waking up knackered the next day for more car work. Then have to take it all down before going home, all possibly in the fishing rain. I love the car work don't get me wrong, and the camp fire chats and nosh ups, but all that in conjunction with no sleep makes the whole thing a marathon.
We are a car club, IMO. Not a camping club, although that's a means for quite a few, fair enough. We do cars. Two days is a bit short for setting up base camp (chrisgixer moves on for fear of over stating the camping point) although I've heard others say similar being honest.
Maybe a lot of people have got wise to the omega issues and they are not really issues any more. So the learning process has tailed off, along with the inquisitive members visiting. This is just the way of things.
As said too, half a dozen maybes isn't really fair on the organisers....is the take up less at this point, campared to other years given the notice period, do we know?
Travel? Mmmm, no I don't see that as a barrier, it's what cars are for ;D finances, maybe. Recession and all might explain the downturn previously, along with the Elefant in the room of the unpleasantness that bubbled up with Daz and Ljay. It's mostly for this reason I wonder if a change of venue would rid this Date of that stigma, if a stigma exists at all...?
But changing venue will be a royal pita, and no mistake. Whoever takes this on will need to do so knowing it might very well be a complete waste of time. That taking payment will be painful, there will be little or nowhere near enough thanks, and odd behaviour will have to be tolerated or ignored.
...thought occurs, we don't seem to get any of latterly mentioned silliness at day meets. No payment needed there obviously of course.... I remember one of the weekend meets I completely neglected to bring any cash :-[ like an ops wit, 'twas the only thing I had to do to repay the effort Daz put in and failed. :-[
But again, that's the nature of organising these things, ie dealing with eejits like me. ;D

Just throwing a curve ball into this discussion.... Why is it that Terbert's High Wycombe meet has a high number (compared to 'other' meets in recent years) of attendee's?
If I was to stick my neck out, I'd say it's because there are no big arrangements, just turn up with your car on the day or if you want too come the night before and stay locally with a few others and have a beer just let people know.
Again, if I was to stick my neck out further, now the Forum has less 'regulars' compared to three or four years ago (please don't take offence at that, it's not meant to be a negative statement), maybe the numbers just aren't there for the long weekend meets.
Would a weekend / camping meet see more attendees if it was part of something bigger like Billing for example?
Just thoughts, don't take me too seriously!

He did, it's a bugger admitting it though isn't it............... :D :D :D
The most recent lakes venue gave, as you said, the option to hire a caravan or camp / caravan and work on cars; and not far into Keswick with plenty to do.............. :y :y
I do appreciate you are talking about Newent............. :y

A significant issue with the weekend meets is the accommodation side of things, which will probably see fewer and fewer people prepared to camp, and in reality, the likes of Guffers last Cambelt meet will become a distant memory as having those facilities and accommodation side by side is something that is unlikely to happen again :'(
Both Terberts Wycombe and the Oxford meets are well subscribed, as are the Kent meets by all accounts, so I wonder if the future of the official meets is as day meets rather than weekend ones :-\
-

I can bring my own ....... ::)
-
Tents outnumbered plastic boxes 7-1 last year ::)
7 tents and one plastic box being the total turnout rather than a mere ratio :-\
Besides, not everyone has a caravan either, or wants one ::)

Right. Day meets it is then. :P ;D ;D ;D :P

Always liked the idea of popping over to one of these gatherings since I joined the OOF but every miggy I had owned over the years ( on my 6th now) has always had issues that I inherited from previous owners and spend many pounds on them.. Usually leaks and steering issues and never get round ("or have the funds) to sort body work out and I would feel kinda embarrassed to turn up in something that needs some tlc to the body.. I seen the piccies of the cars that where at the last meet and I would have felt like the poor relation in the family.
-
Nonsense, there are some nice ones and there are some slightly scruffy ones knocking around, hell I even turned up in an Insignia. Twice :o

Try not to beat yourself up too much ;D ;D ;D

Even so.. I would still like certain bits n pieces done before I would be at ease so to speak. Don't get me wrong its not an ole rust bucket but the things that annoy the pant's off me are always just inside my peripheral vision..😐
-
As I wont be getting a puppy anytime soon :( My bros black lab bitch seems to be taking the morning after pill ::) I will definitely attend Newent if it goes ahead :y :)
-
As mentioned on another thread, this is going ahead now. I'll get more details up in next day or so, I've got somewhat sidetracked tonight with some problems Bro has.
