Ah yes , since doing my best to get this car serviced and changed the oil twice its sprung a leak from the front crank seal >:( I thought it was the oil pressure switch which i did replace but after i cleaned all around i notice its dribbling from the front crank seal ::)
Rocker gaskets an wells bone dry . Was planning the cam belt change so lucky this is spotted now :( Im guessing the crank seal is not a big job if the cam belts being done anyway ?? :-\

front pulley nut is a pig to undo though

Yes , seem to recall problems with that , is it a scaffold pole and 4 portly people job :-\

and someway of locking crank from rotating

Hows that done Symes ?

Make sure that the engine doesn't turn backwards (anticlockwise) while you are undoing the bolt or you run the risk of the cambelt tensioner getting compressed and the belt skipping some teeth.
-
Best idea is to make something to lock the crank in its position :y

:y
Is this a common fault ? I seem to be recalling a few on here seeing oil accumulation below the pulley assuming its cam cover leakage . Cant see a guide for it either :-\

Thanks for that :y Think ill make a few phone calls an see what its going to cost for cam belt replacement and crank seal replacement .

Use the crank locking tool from the cambelt locking kit ::)

I don't think that will be man enough Al, will it?
Especially given the bolt needs undoing, and the crank lock is designed to hold a clockwise rotation. Turn it anti clockwise and its pulling against the little adjuster clamp thingy on the side that's done up with a thumb wheel.
Could fit the crank lock to the right of the water pump, but I'm buggered if I'd be putting a couple of hundred nm through my crank lock. Tbh.
I've seen contraptions made with a bolt patten the same as the pulley bolts, then a long Handel bolted to that to keep the crank still with a breaker bar on the nut. Looked like at least a two foot Handel. With stories of busted key ways. Iirc?

Nooooo :( Wont be doing the job myself though

I tried to replace crank seal after replacing cam seals although none of seals was leaking. Needless to say I couldn't remove bolts even with an air gun so I left it

Yeah i dont think air guns are powerful enough though :-\

Use the crank locking tool from the cambelt locking kit ::)
I am guessing that you are joking? (because nobody would be silly enough to assume you were serious :-\ )
Having read about how people have destroyed the pulley by holding it while trying (unsuccessfully) to undo the bolt I think the easiest way is to grind the head off the old bolt and fit a new one after.
The way I have held the crank still in the past is to make something to engage with the teeth on the starter ring gear - easy with the engine out but tricky with it bolted to the gearbox

I think the vx tool is a bracket that bolts to the crank pulley, and is then anchored to the alternator bracket. I have seen home made tools that anchor to the ac bracket bolt, or long handled items simply heald by hand to oppose the undoing torque of the breaker bar.
300nm so leverage is key I'd guess. (Having never done one) but needs researching as to the correct method, as all the force is going through the pulley to the crank via a key way. Either the key or the key way could, in theory, be damaged, depending on the engine and construction methods used.
Master or someone more knowing will be along hopefully. But given the right tools and info, it's most certainly doable. If it was made it can be unmade. ....hopefully without breaking it. ;D

I will have to look up the bolt torque setting..I dont think 250Nm is right. You do need a new bolt....you can feel the bolt stretch as you put the angle tightening
I think I would make a tool (like the tool Matchless made) & try to undo the bolt but if it didn't undo first attempt I would be cutting the head off the bolt before I broke anything.

What's the part number for the genuine tool?
-
Wiped everything down again today an lay underneath watching where oil is coming from ::)
Looks like ir mite be the cam seal ::) Took the cam cover off drive side an no leaks from the cc . But it dont drip much while on tick over , drive it an there;s a puddle of oil on the sump pan top >:(
Meant to say its dropping from above the crank pulley it seems :(

Not sure the factory workshop tools are available under the normal part numbers. Are they? :-\ would ther be a part number for the cam belt locking kit, for example... ?
